BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Illinois coach Brad Underwood challenged his defense at halftime.
The 12th-ranked Fighting Illini responded like champions.
Trent Frazier scored Illinois’ final 10 points in regulation and put the Illini ahead with a free throw in overtime, and the defense took care of the rest in a 75-71 victory over Indiana on Tuesday night.
“It was the first time in a while I’ve been really, really upset with my basketball team at halftime,” Underwood said. “Giving up 41 points in the first half is not real conducive to winning on the road. We looked lost. It was just real lethargic and they whipped us (inside). But we responded.”

Emphatically.

yeah i also said he missed 2-3 layups getting bumped (shrug), and missed a cpl he shouldve made. The 2 threes he missed were wide open. But its hard to call him a no show where he showed up in other places while still getting to double digits.

It's an off game for sure, but i usually think of no shows as not impacting the game at all or not showing effort in a bad game. Not really the case for ayo tonight
+ 1
Ayo showed up. He just had an off night. It happens, but it wasn’t due to a lack of effort. No show = no effort. Effort was there.

That game was 2:45 long. Those refs need to never work again.
Wow, I set my Direct TV to record the 2 hour scheduled time PLUS the extra 30 minutes and still missed all of the overtime. Without overtime, it was still 2 hours 30 minutes.

Suggestion: Our pre-game thread had a bunch of "bad ref" comments (me included). Pre-game thread against Wisc should just be gushing with praise for the refs.

Net is, Karma is a B**ch

YouTube TV automatically adjusts - even when they move the games. Set it to record your Team (University and Sport) and off it goes. Just sayin'

I don't have time to read the 11 pages but Belo played like an out of control HS guard looking for to much me-time during the second half. Dribbling into crowds, losing the ball, launching desperation layups!!!! I hope he learns from this game and I think he will. He salvaged the night with a timely pass to Kofi at the end but maybe there would have been no need for OT if we didn't have so many wasted possessions. He doesn't lack desire or effort because he always plays hard but the reward to risk ratio last night was not good. But he's a freshman and for the most part has been contributing at a high level all year.

Couldn't disagree more. Yes there were some freshman plays, but he is the reason we won the game.

This article speaks to it well: https://247sports.com/college/illin...Illinois-basketball-win-at-Indiana-160373618/

This is an absolutely absurd take. Let's address your points one at a time.

"Dribbling into crowds"- You act as if that's necessarily a bad thing.

"Losing the ball" - He had 1 turnover so yes, technically, he lost the ball, but a 4:1 A/T ratio is fine by me. He also had 2 steals and 1 offensive rebound, so he gained us more possessions than he lost us.

"Launching desperation layups" - He was 3-6 from the field and 6-9 from the FT line. I'll take a 50% FG% from him every single day. And getting to the line as often as he did is great.

The dude had 12 points, 5 boards, 4 assists, 2 steals, and 1 turnover and shot 50% from the field. The reward to risk ratio last night was actually pretty darn good.

Updated conference per possession stats after a full weekend of Big Ten basketball for everyone not named Michigan or Nebraska:

Illinois now up to the 2nd best defense in the conference to go with the second best offense. Nebraska looks to finally be starting games again this weekend after back to back two week breaks for COVID, so the rest of the conference should get a boost to their efficiency fairly soon.

Awesome to win a game when you dont have your star player for extended minutes. Thought he played really well, got a few bogus calls against, maybe forced 2/3 shots, but got really unlucky with some of the bunnies he missed. He makes those 90% of the time.

I was impressed with the D in overtime. Maybe the players just adjusted, but they clearly understood the refs were whistle happy. A couple makeup charge calls maybe, but IU wasn't getting shots to fall the majority of the night sans the FT line. We played them almost perfectly in OT--forced them to make shots.

The more I reflect on this game, the happier I am.

- We won a game on the road vs. a longtime rival that was playing for its NCAA life and possibly its coach's entire future at the school. The game was called completely ridiculously, and while the bad calls went both ways, there were more than a couple AWFUL ones that went against us in key moments. Barely competent officiating gets us a W in regulation, which leads me to my next point...

- We had so many things go against us, and we kept fighting. Trent or Andre makes FTs that they usually make, and we win in regulation. Kofi and Ayo hit layups to finish off good drives and moves, and we win in regulation. Trent hits a wide open 3-pointer that he hits a majority of the time, and we win in regulation. Ayo's "charge" call goes the proper (and OBVIOUS) way for a block and a three-point play, and we win in regulation. Which brings me to my last point...

- We played SO many crucial minutes without Ayo, and the guys STEPPED UP. So many players in foul trouble having to play with that in the back of their minds, no Giorgi for help down low and no superstar clutch ice-in-the-veins go-to guy, and did we fold? Absolutely not. So many things should have gotten this group down and out and WOULD HAVE in the past. We played through a ton of adversity and never stopped believing we could win.

There is a long way to go, but we might look back on this one as the "getting over the hump" game. Perhaps our style of play and relative inexperience at certain positions makes an easy blowout win somewhat difficult for this group, but DAMN if we aren't playing mentally tough lately ... and that was the main thing missing. Sky is the limit for these boys!!

I’m not going to in depth on my thoughts on Curbelo here as I’ve posted them in the past. One thing I will say is that I don’t think TO/A ratio tells the whole story with AC. He does have a number of plays that though they don’t end in a TO for him do result in a poor possession for the team. I know a lot of people don’t like Dakich, but he was commenting on AC’s poor decision making for a stretch in 2nd half, and I think he was right. But all that said, there is no arguing with the fact he has some very special skills and makes some great plays. It is the classic have to take the good with the bad, and for the most part he has been a net positive and a big part of the team’s success thus far. Thing is I have a sneaking suspicion that we’ll continue to see the “bad Belo” beyond this year. Experience will help, but it is just the way he plays. My hope is that he gets stronger next year so that more of his forays into the paint that now result in a “poor possession” move to the good possession side of the ledger. That for me is the next step in his evolution. If that happens, look out. Until then I’m sure I’ll continue to find myself yelling at him through the TV screen — sometimes for bad decision making and sometimes for another of his great plays.

Typical game in the B10. Game wise not a thing of beauty, however result was great, winning a game in the B10 especially on the road is gold. If Kofi has any aspirations on playing at the next level, he has to finish better around the rim, yeah he had some nasty dunks, however, he missed more than a few point blanks shots, one of which could have ended the game in regulation. IMO another year in college would help his stock, at this point he's projected late 2nd round. And I have to say this again, refereeing has been as bad as I've ever seen it and it has to be addressed, that phantom call on Bezhanishvili late in the game that fouled him out was mindboggling.

I didn't stay to the bitter end. Too late given an early morning here. A single OT game clocking in at 2:45?! That's not ideal.

Can't tell if we should be pleased that the boys can pull out a game in OT on the road after giving up >40 in first half down seven, or to wonder whether that latter part is eventually going to sink us.

+100 for Trent. Curbelo is going to be a great one by the time he leaves.
Yes, we should be pleased. Any B10 win is a good win, especially on the road. It is that simple.

This cracked me up. “It was the first time in a while I’ve been really, really upset with my basketball team at halftime,” Underwood said. So it’s probably safe to say he’s been upset with his team at halftime, maybe even really upset. But really, really upset? Not in a while. Lol

Streaming some of the Dakich show. He has Underwood on right now. Dakich just said he thinks that was the worst officiated game he's seen. Also told Underwood not to say anything lol. People hate on him but he knows his stuff. He opened by pretty much ripping Indiana.

This is an awesome article. Everyone should take the time to read it. Thanks for posting.
He's remarkably effective for a true-frosh PG. There's a reason BU gives him so much tick. On a thread of an earlier game, after he did something boneheaded and then subsequently genius within about 10 seconds of each other I joked that he's a sin-and-instant-redemption act. IMO, he's going to be one of the Illini greats by the time he leaves us.
