As someone that was courtside, as best as I can understand is that he was forcing things offensively rather than running offense. That wasn’t the bad part and the coaching staff was working with him. The bad part was Brad subbed him twice for bad defensive possessions. The second one is the one where he got VERY upset. He’s clearly not adjusted to the speed or physicality. Not sure what but he was late and misreading on literally every possession.
Offensively, he missed like three layups. If those go, we're probably talking about a different story. Defensively he's been a liability.

It's where the semi-competition for the starting spot with Wagler pales - Keaton will always be part of your best defensive lineup and rebounding lineup. And he's more than capable of nights like tonight offensively. Also doesn't put the ball in harms way (zero turnovers in 34 minutes played).

I don't post often (longtime lurker way before I got an account) , but i have greatly enjoyed your posts over the years. I appreciate your good vibes, win or lose. You add a unique seasoning to this community that can't be replicated. Take care, man. And, Go Illini.
Thank you my Illini brother for your kind words...my love for all things orange and blue is well known and gets stronger every day....

LET'S GO ILLINI!!!!!

First half was pretty typical of how we play coming off layoff. Surprising that we stayed close getting beat up on the boards. The one thing that stood out to me in the first half was the Illini defense made it very tough on the Vols to get anything going inside. The 2nd half is what I have been expecting all year-tough defense finally, getting the ball inside and kicking it out for an open shot that we finally made. I didn't hear the clanging of the ball bouncing off the rim tonight. Short turn around to get ready for OSU. They will be looking for revenge for the football teams loss.

No.....I had a stroke on Sat 11-22 and have been in ICU for 6 days and now in rehab therapy for at least 2 more weeks or longer depending on how it goes...

They are treating me wonderfully here.....they really are....
Glad to hear you’re on the mend. Anyone here have some pull to send an extra NL or three Pru’s way to help the recovery out a little more??

Thanks for the in-person insight there. I will say, this cannot possibly be an easy position for Petrovic to be in given his experience and it will certainly be something to keep an eye on. He almost certainly came here to start and to be a bench player with limited minutes is a tough one to swallow. He has been working his way back from injury but he has really struggled defensively and outside of one game the offense he has provided just hasn't come close to offsetting it. It's still early in the season, but he really has some work to do, especially when it comes to buying in defensively.

And just so people understand with data. As of right now:

Petrovic:
Offensively (including today): 0.934ppp on 25.4% possessions. (Lowest on team by a country mile.)
-Roughly translates to Illinois scoring 64.0ppg when he contributes
-Illinois when he's on the bench averages 1.293ppp roughly translating to 88.7ppg!

Defensively (not including today): Illinois allows 1.158ppp when he's on the floor (Worst on the team- only him and Andrej negative)
-Roughly translates to opponents scoring 79.4ppg when he's on the floor
-When he's on bench, Illinois opponents average 0.969ppp roughly translating to 66.5ppg!

Those are in the extremely unheard of metrics territory where you basically have a player that is just struggling compared to the rest of the team on both sides of the ball. Now again, this is all very early, but it is fair to say he's had a rough go of it here so far. Gotta put his head down, increase defensive intensity and the rest will follow including playing time.
Great information. I believe a lot of his non production is associated with his lack of practice time due to injuries.

Having a healthy Tomi back like we had tonight just show how important he is to the team. We split this tough nonconference play 2-2. Hell yay.
Big Z only got 9 minutes...still not 100% ?

That 2nd half for us=Toughness. If the team brings that toughness to every game good things will happen.
Trying to remember...not you but wasn't many on here calling us soft?

There were several on here raising questions about the team’s possible lack of athleticism and lacking toughness.

After Alabama and UConn, those were absolutely legitimate questions. It’s OK to question and identify possible areas to improve. With the conference season now upon us, I’m hoping we see a lot more of what we saw in the second half.

Huge win for the outlook on the season. I said in the pregame thread there wasn’t much reason to be optimistic but there would be if we won!

Nice to finally make some shots. Great defense. Took care of the ball.

I still think we shouldn’t shoot more than 25 threes in a game, and we have to get tougher on the boards, but we showed heart down the stretch! ILL

Different fans.

Neutral sites weed out the less fanatical fans. Kind of like a destination wedding.

I think lots of the Champaign crowd goes to games because they feel obligated.

I thought of 3 main reasons. This is definitely one of them.

2) Neutral sites turn into a competition between fanbases. It turns into a pride thing where you can't let Tennessee fans sound louder than you.

3) Beer. I'm sure there were many Illini fans enjoying Broadway several hours before the game started. Yes, I know we serve beer at home games. But not many people are drinking on a Tues or Wed work night. And looking at our schedule, we only have 2 Sat home games. Nebraska at 4 and Minnesota at Noon. That Nebraska game should be a pretty good atmosphere.
