Purdue’s the best win, cmon now.I feel crazy for writing this, but this might be my favorite win so far. Slow start, very physical opponent who could match the Illini’s size and even missing FTs. Tomi 1-8 from three, and all but one wide-open looks.
Washington playing as well as they can for long stretches and their big guy every bit as good as advertised. Oh, and no Boswell.
Yet other than spotting them 7 points, I never really thought the game was in doubt. It was Ben’s turn to shine, and he didn’t flinch.
To me, that all adds up to this being a really good, deep team that just handles business. I’m not sure we’ve seen 40 minutes of their A-plus game yet. That should be a scary thought for opponents.
1. Give Washington a lot of credit for playing hard, aggressive defense making it difficult on the Illini.
2. BH? Keep this up! This is what we've been looking for. You or Jake?
3. AS just confuses me at times. Looks good at getting to the hoop with a few layups, but other times, it's brutal to watch. Not sure what BU and staff can do to get him more looks or something? Post him up possibly, so he's more stable on the ground to make a good move?
4. Yes, we need KB for every game, but this was the game that I felt Illinois needed him desperately. He would've given KW a break at PG, penetrate willingly and either dish off some nice assists or get his points at the basket.
5. I thought they'd cover, but Washington played hard while the Illini weren't crisp at all, especially in the first half.
My front runner at the moment would be Jeremy Fears. He’s been absolutely fabulous for Michigan State. All the talk about assist to turnover - his ratio is 3.96 which is objectively insane. If it were handed out today, I really wouldn’t get how anyone can have Wagler lower than 2nd for B10 POY.
You could honestly make the case for #1 since we went to Mackey and won the head to head against Braden Smith. Oh, and he dropped 46 on 17 shots in that game.
Z prevented a boatload of drives to the basketReasonably predictable letdown game. What's below "rock fight" on the ugly basketball scale?
Props to Keaton, Mirk, and Ben. Everyone else, not so much.
Z changed the game when he came in. Washington was getting easy buckets at the rim. Z blocked shots, caused turnovers, grabbed boards, and forced difficult jumpers (which unfortunately went in way too frequently).Z prevented a boatload of drives to the basket
Hilarious. "Ben would have given up 20 to Izzo's mom last year."
And we will. For some reason, this team plays better on the road!Good win after the emotional win at PU. Tomi's shot was flat. The same with Z. The missed free throws early didn't help to pull away. Overall we put a W on the ledger. Have to play better def against NB.
Tonight was a game for which I desperately wish we had the Ty for Andrej lever to pull. Not to completely dwell on it, as we won and it's a very minute thing, but I really did not like the play at the end by Stoj.
It's a 12pt game, 36sec, shot clock at 18... UW not even looking to foul... and he goes in and gets blocked. Fast forward and UW has a shot to cut it to 6 with 16sec left. Yes, they missed, excellent contest by Z, but game should've been over right then and there.
To me it signals playing for the stats. He had the exact play against Penn State too when the shot clock was OFF.
Yeah I am surprised I wasn’t as nervous about this game when UW got within 5 points multiple times. It just felt like we’d find a way to keep the lead and pull it out. Can’t say I’ve felt that comfortable in years past.I remember watching multiple games like this as a kid in 2005. Other team is playing with spirit, maybe it’s not a night where our offense is going to blitz the other team … but guess what? We’re super talented, we’re calm under pressure and eventually we’ll get separation and beat you.
Good win, now on to the Huskers!
Down to 7 on Torvik and 6 on KenPom.
They play less than the sum of their parts.Washington is going to ambush someone before the year is up. They aren't that bad whatsoever.
