Ayo passes the eye test for NBA player. Don't see the late first round projection, if this holds true he will prove many GMs wrong.

You must be the same guy that said that Curbelo was going to start over Frazier. Yes he is the perfect point guard. He can't shoot, he turns the ball over, he has difficulty staying with his man, he makes silly fouls and he believes in circus shot selection. But he does make one make one great pass a game. Yep that is the formula you need to win a Championship. Let him develop over the summer I more interested in winning a Championship.
Are we watching the same player?

I'm wondering myself how Hamlin doesn't even see the floor .A 7 footer can definitely give the team a few minutes here and there . Hell he can't be any worse then GB . And we definitely need another point guard to back up Trent . AC keeps doing the same crap almost every game . Yes he is young .Yes he will learn eventually . But he needs to stop the circus shots and turnovers. I know everyone is dazzled by a few passes and assists and the fact that he dribbles tennis balls . Underwood needs to reel him in a little when he starts acting like he is a Globetrotter . The kid can be unbelievably good at times .
It blows me away that some think they can give coach underwood personnel advice.

I would like Curbelo to succeed just as much as anyone. In talking about development he has now played 19 games. I just don't see any difference between game 1 and game 19 that he has an understanding how to correct the mistakes he makes. Either he is not listening to what the coaches are telling him or the coaches are not working on his mistakes. I would just like to see him play in the flow of the game instead of thinking he has to make a play all the time. I think that what gets him in trouble. As I pointed before this team has to win now. Having players together like Ayo and Kofi don't come every year and Culbero does not show improvement in not turning the ball over and not taking crazy shots his minutes need to be limited.
Lol

The bolded is not how sports work. If being an excellent decision maker was just a matter of listening to your coaches, then the vast majority of players would be excellent decision makers.

You don’t want to coach Curbelo’s aggressiveness out of him, because that is what makes him special. You just want to coach him to be able to pick and choose the right opportunities to be aggressive. In a game like basketball, that is dependent on Curbelo being able to see and instantaneously process many different factors during the chaos of the game. Developing that ability at a new level of play takes many months, if not years. Expecting him to just get it after three months and 19 games is not realistic.

Underwood’s challenge will be managing minutes in a must-win game and balancing the need for a spark from Curbelo (like we needed early in this game) against the need to not waste any possessions.

His improvement this year has been truly remarkable. At this point, it seems his biggest hole is going left on drives. But his year-to-year improvement leaves me no doubt he'll hone that skill in a year or two.

Curbelo is learning and getting better as the season goes along....does he still dribble himself into trouble and commit TO's....yes....but he's a little more under control than he was 7-8 games ago....recognizing, as he penetrates, open passing lanes or shot opportunities, is becoming a little easier for him....as we moved into the portion of the schedule where every possession is magnified more so than earlier in our schedule, those TO's become more magnified to us the fans as well as the coaching staff.....thus BU and staffs biggest challenge is to recognize when AC needs to sit and when he can provide that spark to get us going....playing him for long stretches is probably not going to happen unless Trent, Ayo, or AM are in foul trouble....at least the rest of this season.....but I really believe we'll all be singing his praises this time next year

There are some perimeter players in the league who are making a ton of money and have gaping holes in their game. I think he needs to do a couple things well and he will make his mark. Probably his finishing ability in transition and defense will keep him on the floor.

No doubt. Someone on here last week told me the refs are watching DMFW. I didn't know we had a B1G referee insiders.
He does have a rep it seems. They are watching him. I does his fair amount of jawing. I do think though that the F1 against the snot nose Rutgers kid was a lot of acting. Rutgers must have saw something on tape that Monte moves his arms like that when either team is shooting FTs. He needs to do a little less jawing to get him off the radar.

DW reminds me so much of Lucas Johnson....everyone not an Illini fan hates him....but everyone would gladly take him

LJ is one of my all time illini favorites. His brother was good too. We had 8 years of Johnson Brothers. I keep hoping they have sons that will suit up for the beloved.
The Arizona games between Self and Olsen are great examples of Lucas absolutely getting under Lute's skin. Wish we got those dubs, but still fond memories.

Curbelo is also not a bad defender. Sure, he misses the occasional assignment. Who doesn't? Every advanced statistic tells the story of a good defender. He has a better DBPM and Defensive Rating than Ayo (and is better rated than Trent at the latter too). His Win Shares/40 is higher than Trent. He has a high steal rate, block rate, and rebounding rate for his position and size (again, better than Trent in all three).

We get it, AC makes plenty of glaring mistakes that cause you -- everybody, really -- to shout at your TV. His turnover rate is really high. He makes stupid plays at times. But it's also plainly obvious that the good outweighs the bad. He is an objective net benefit to this team right now. Acting like he is the reason we won't win a chip is just plain silly.

Obviously, you have a personal dislike for AC and/or his playing style. He’s an incredibly talented freshman with a high ceiling and steep learning curve. You can’t get experience and comfortable from the bench. Play him for his spark and let him learn. We’re going to need him come playoff time.

My criticism of AC is that he plays like a teenager/rookie. I am confident this is temporary.

We are not an physical team, other than KC. We need an "Enforcer" who is willing to inflict a little discomfort. All good teams have one. Did you see AC go and grab DW after a mix up, before he got in one of the Huskers faces Would really like to see TF, DW, AC and AM playing together next year.

Lot of ragging on Curbelo on here. Looking at freshman stats for a few of the best Illini PG's.

G/MPG/PPG/RPG/APG/TOG/FG%/FT%/3PT%

Curbelo: 19 / 20.4 / 7.8 / 3.1 / 4.4 / 2.6 / .462 / .766 / .158
McCamey: 35 / 27.3 / 8.2 / 2.9 / 3.3 / 2.5 / .364 / .627 / .340
Dee: 32 / 34.1 / 12.1 / 5.0 / 1.94 / .434 / .681 / .329
Deron: 32 / 27.1 / 6.3 / 3.0 / 4.5 / 1.84 / .426 / .533 / .354
Garris: 28 / 31.8 / 15.9 / 3.5 / 3.8 / 2.79 / .433 / .803 / .333
Douglas: 32 / 31.8 / 9.4 / 2.7 / 5.9 / 2.72 / .459 / .719 / .250
Harper: 29 / 32.2 / 8.3 / 2.6 / 5.4 / 2.28 / .413 / .717 / NA

Looks like AC compares pretty well on a lot less minutes per game. Obviously, the 3 pt shooting is a major problem!
BTW, I didn't put Frank in this comparison before because his first year was as a redshirt freshman and I figured he had an advantage. Looking at his RS frosh stats, he fits in with all the other first year comparisons.

Williams: 32 / 30.4 / 11.4 / 3.4 / 4.1 / 2.81 / .382 / .804 / .316

If Curbelo turns out like any one of these previous PG's, I think we'd all be satisfied.
