Feel like all people would like to see is more consistent shot making. His teammate Jake Davis would be a perfect example.

I think we can all agree he’s been very good in terms of not making mental errors, defense, rebounding, etc. If only a few shots went down, he’d be looked at so differently.

To his credit, he really seemed to turn a corner in the three games prior to Nebraska.
Issue with Ben and has unfortunately continued to be that sometimes the lights just seem a little too bright for him. He struggles to make shots in the biggest games. I don’t think he made a field goal and only attempted maybe 1 shot total in our 2 tourney games. I keep waiting for the take the lid finally comes off and he bangs in 5 3s in a prime time marquee matchup but hasn’t come yet and may never come.

But, he’s perfect in his role this year. Plays hard, plays good defense, rebounds, limits mistakes. Any shot making is a bonus. Very solid role player.

Doubt he ever hits 5 threes in a prime time marquee matchup either. Keaton has only done that once, so it’s just hard (even for stars who regularly put up 7+ three point attempts and shoot 44% or whatever it is). It definitely is the difference between being a solid role player and the Dalton Knecht level production people, for some weird reason, thought he was capable of when he signed.

I do recall he did make a couple of threes on the road at Mackey, and I believe he made 3 in the game vs Alabama, so it can be done… he just won’t get 5 more than likely, because he will rarely attempt as may as he did vs Nebraska where he of course goes 0-6 after making 8-14 in the three prior games.

As long as we’re expecting the average shooting percentage to continue (we should be; no reason not to at this point), he’s continued to exceed my expectations overall as a bench player who can come in and play good defense and not turn the ball over.

Ben's role this year is perfect. And I think he's done a good job in it. He just shouldn't have been the 30mpg guy to start last season - with the performances he was having - so I think that criticsm was fairly warranted.

In terms of this year, he really hasn't done THAT much to piss fans off and has been a better rebounder and defender. Hopefully the shots fall.

Just listening to Field of 68, and I have to type that I am proud of Mike La Tulip defending the Illini against two other dudes propping up Nebraska.

I felt they really didn't give credit to Illinois's big victory by making excuses for Nebraska. MLT stood up and defended the Illini with facts.

Interesting thing is that Mast wasn't 100%, so that's why Illinois basically won.

Do they NOT realize that Kylan Boswell is OUT due to INJURY for a while now. They're not impressed with how the Illini are playing without one of their best players and leader? LOL!

Keep underestimating.

I let my team watch this on my phone between games during a tournament we were in. They were so excited and it's been such a run, I couldn't refuse. I think they had more fun watching the second half than they did in the next game.

I think the big difference this season has been our willingness to be patient and wait not for a good shot, but for the best shot almost every possession. Our pace has slowed to a crawl and we just work together so well.

I told my brother he was gesturing to the driver to get the bus warmed up, we're wrapping this up.

It nice that the players we have don’t turn the ball over so much. Like last year.

I've really respected Hoiberg as a coach up until now, but that BS really fractures the respect I had for him. I'm not sure what he thinks he's accomplishing by publicly whining about the officiating like that. Does he think he's going to influence zebras that way? Refs are human. Catching wind of BS like this is just going to piss them off.

For me, though, there's a much worse consequence of a coach behaving this way in their postgame presser. There is no leader more important or more influential than the head coach of a team. If his players see him whining about the refs, players look to that as their example for what's acceptable for them to focus on, instead of focusing inward...on how they could have player better. I think this sort of rant can be a culture killer on a team.
While I agree with the spirit here, I’m not sure why we’d think it has no influence.

Lute Olson on the court and Walton in the booth had everyone convinced we were murderous thugs in 2001, and the refs called everything on us in that game.

Hoiberg wouldn’t be doing it if he didn’t think it would have an effect down the line.

Looking back on what I got to be a part of yesterday, this team just beat #5 Nebraska on the road going away, yes.
But that arena was the loudest hostile environment I've been in since the regular season loss at Purdue a couple of years ago.
And we're still missing our senior starting PG.
Emphatically.
That is wild levels of composure. This team just does not crack.
Buying a ticket in Chicago now.

I will happily take the hustle plays he made yesterday for the missed 3s. He's shooting with confidence. Dude was a beast yesterday.

🤣🤣🤣🤣 He definitely was having a conversation with the student section on that end. It was Izzone levels of drunk 18 year olds. I got some fingers myself when they were filing out sadly. I think you're right!
Thank you for your support in a hostile environment! May they go back to husking/shucking months old Corn while they await their next home game :ROFLMAO:. You gave the biggest finger of all, while casually walking out with a W (y)

I agree with you Hoiberg is trying to influence the refs for future games because he thinks it will work, or he was just frustrated by two straight losses and lost his composure in the presser - either way it was a very weird rant- Nebraska draws the lowest foul rate in the country and we commit the fewest fouls in the country.

I don’t know what he expected- their shooters were very passive the second half. We did not hold on screens, he literally just made it up, maybe he’s trying to get sympathy, but somebody should call him out on it

Ummm... Maybe my memory sucks, but,... Didn't they both win by the same score???

Lawrence is their one player who hurt us last time. He basically was a no show. We got him into foul trouble. We played an all around sound game. Onto beating the kitty cats. As Ric Flair says diamonds are forever and so are the Fighting Illini.

The lack of foul calls in the first half hurt us, too. Andrej couldn't buy a call, Keaton got hacked several times and was looking pretty sore by the end of the half. It was clear early on that the refs were swallowing the whistle, and it hurt both teams for different reasons.
