Are you sure you’re not talking about the TN game? At this point, these redonkulously officiated games are starting to run together.

To put 44 fouls into perspective, it's the equivalent of 8 players fouling out, or an average of almost 3 fouls per player if both teams go 8 deep. Or another way, literally more than a foul a minute. Almost unwatchable (watchable only because the Illini are playing).
Players foul out. Wonder of it's time for officials to "foul out" if they call too many. One guy calls more than 15 fouls, he's replaced by someone the home team picks (like the vet from Rochester that sits on the front row, for example). /s (I think)

If each of the first 4 were fouls, how do you play defense in the paint without fouling? Just run away?
Pretty simple and exactly what refs are taught and required to call. In the first four instances, MJ does not have his arms straight up which is required. They reach down some and this is not allowed. What is sooooooooo disappointing is that he jumps vertically and the offensive player jumps into him. If his arms had been vertical, the offensive player initiated contact. No call should result. But who knows if that crew would have done so?

I simply can't believe that no foul was called after Morez was clearly thrown to the floor. That should have been a Double T and the player ejected from the game. There is no excuse for that incompetence. I know Gates running out onto the floor created a distraction, but that is something that shouldn't have been overlooked. Another thing, the play by play announcers weren't even discussing it, until like 5 min. later.

I saw someone post it earlier, but I'd move Ben to a bench role and when he does come in, have a designed play for him to get some shots. If he's hitting, he gets more minutes.

Morez at very worst provides a high floor and gets rebounds and plays defense. He needs minutes to adjust to the game, so does Will. I'd be shifting minutes to them, and let Ben figure it out when games aren't close.

On TV it looked to me like rez basket at the end of the half was not good.
I agree with you. Saw the same. I also thought there were a few more angles that could have been used that they didn’t show on TV… all I kept seeing was the one from the opposite end that you can’t see ball contact with hand.

if you look at the first four fouls he was not straight up with his arms. they were at about 65 degree angles toward the player and, when that player (deliberately) runs into them, that's called a foul all day. Plus he was swaying toward the other player. He'll learn to have arms straight up body straight up and he will have less fouls.

No excuse for the last one though. That's as clean a block as you'll ever see. Bad, bad call.

But I LOVE this young man's attitude-=DON'T come into my KITCHEN! and as only a freshman! Been a while since we had an an intimidator in the middle like that!
Once again, not saying he went up with text book technique on those block attempts. Just that I have seen more contact and less verticality not called on other players quite often this year. Such as when KJ got ran over by 2 defenders on his 3pt attempt at the end of the half

Who is going to back up Big T if they both play extensive minutes and in foul trouble at the 5? Morez and Big T can play some together but not extensively or they would both be in foul trouble too often and there are not many options at the 5 if that happens and it would.

What was Gates even so upset about? I'm still honestly confused by that whole sequence.

Why hate on either of them?...they are Illini guys, wearing the uniform, playing hard, and trying to contribute to their team winning. There are almost always guys on every team at every level that are struggling at any one time. WE KNOW FOR A FACT that those things change. They need love too when they are struggling....and that will change in time. Lets hope very soon as both Riley and Hummer can make HUGE contributions when their shots are falling. It's all between the ears in that regard.

It is simply mind boggling when fans, who have never played the game at this level, bad mouth kids that are elite when they are in a slump. These kids should and do ignore such criticism as they work hard to fight through it.
I heard LaTulip say there was a time as an Illini where Plummer went 2 for 21 from 3. Slumps do happen to good shooters and I think things will change. I recall Harper went 1 of 17 from the field one stretch. BU said they will break out eventually and we all saw Plummer and I believe it will.

I honestly want Ben to take a very hard foul in the first couple minutes of our next big game. And for the bench to go nuts like they did when KJ picked up that tech for taunting. Kid needs some emotion, maybe have him shadow Boz for 72 hours when he gets back from Christmas break.

I've said this before but Ben's problem is he is too nice for high level ball. Even his put back dunk was about as low emphasis as it could have been. He needs some more nasty to his game.

Went to the game yesterday...have been to 15-20 Braggin Rights games, mostly in the 80's and 90's ,but not since 2016....so I thought I'd share some thoughts.

1. Attendance looked to me to be about 2/3 Illini fans 1/3 Mizzo fans....Mizzo was home team and wore their yellow uni's while the Illini visitors wore throwback whites (good)
2. Did anyone else at the game think that during timeouts the big information screen displayed Missouri fans, pep band, cheerleaders way more than Illinois?
I would guess that screen time for both teams was around 70% Mizzo and 30% Illini....I don't remember it being like this before....always thought that they
did a good job of splitting this 50-50....but yesterday was certainly a heavy Missouri lean
3. Officiating was terrible....and sure seemed like Mizzo got the better, especially of those 50-50 calls...the call at end of first half....KJ was fouled on the 3pt attempt...but no call....but the put back by Morez was good....showed the replay several times on the big screen and it was clearly good...both teams left the floor and then officials said basket didn't count....fans went nuts....they didn't show the replay again on big screen after that...was wondering how they spun this on the tv broadcast
4. How long has it been since we've been able to say...this team can shoot and make free throws??? without good free throw shooting yesterday, we lose
5. I was a little surprised that after KB made the first FT near the end of the game to give us a 3 pt lead that we didn't call time out and say that if KB makes the second FT then get back make them use up most of the remaining seconds on the clock and don't foul, and if he misses then foul as soon as you can once they cross half court....Mizzo got a pretty good look from 3 that would have tied it and forced OT...which I thought we had no chance given our foul trouble to win in OT
6. We need to clean up the Turnovers....seems like we're good for 3 or 4 what I call silly TO's every game....
7. I'm not calling for us to abandon the high ball screen....but sure seems like at least a few times a game we need to just get out of KB's way and let him break down his man....let KB beat his man and take it to the hoop...someone comes over to help, dish it off to one of the bigs or kick it out for a 3
8. Don't know if anyone caught this....but I swear we played zone on one possession yesterday...it was in the first half, right after a timeout....it was a short possession by Mizzo, but sure looked like we were in a zone defense.....but next possession we were back to man D...
9. Was really happy to see the Illini hold off Mizzo ....several times Illini would stretch the lead to 7-10 pts, but Mizzo would make a run and even led a couple times....but Illini didn't break....they just kept playing and survived those runs...sign of a good team...
10. Morez showed that he's deserving of more minutes....the team needs more Morez....now if he can just avoid foul trouble and stay on the floor
11. Wil is adjusting to the physicality of the game....slowly....but he's adjusting....think he's due to have a breakout game here soon...that will help this team immensely
12. This team is young and pretty good, with a chance to be very good....I'm sure we'll have a few games in the B10 that will drive us nuts (like NW), but I really think come end of Feb. early March we will be a team that no one really wants to play
The tv replay showed the red light turn in with ball in his hand. They first showed a replay with clock and it looked like he clearly got it off. Then they said the red light is what refs look for.

I did see a zone. I wonder why? It seems like if you’re going to use it at all, we’d use it a bit more to throw teams off..or just never use it.

One other question… Booth, first one off the bench to play 2 mins total? Can anyone make that make sense?
I like BU's overall success at Illinois and putting together some good players this year. HIs subbing has been very frustrating over the years, very much this year. Booth gives length and can pop a 3, he will get better if given some minutes.

OFFICIATING: Missouri coach Gates criticized the officiating in Sunday's Braggin Rights game and with good reason. There were 43 fouls called in the game, 60 free throws shot. Thousands of fans in the Arena and many thousand more viewing the game of TV that paid good money or tuned in to see 2 rival teams play basketball NOT TO SEE the refs take the spotlight. I have watched many college games so far this year from all conferences and it seems more and more we see referees call phantom fouls or witness a player get mugged and nothing called. The phantom fouls are generally called on a break away layup when most times the referee has already made up his mind that the defender will foul the player going for a layup. A lot of times the defender doesn't touch him. The same thing on a defender going up to challenge an offensive player shooting a 2 or 3 pointer and falls to the floor, well he must have been fouled or he wouldn't have fell to the floor. One of the worst officials is Gene Carstensen who starts blowing the whistle coming out of the locker room.
My point is call the game fairly for both sides but most of all let the teams decide the game on the floor and not by a crucial call or at least none of the phantom calls. The NCAA needs to get these officials under control and not turn these games into who can make the most free throws.

For sure. But also he will learn with PT and we only get a sophomore & improved MJ if he plays.

Ben should get Goode minutes and, if hes not having a hot shooting night, should get the same minutes as Ty.
Another reason I think MJ should be starting...it's not just that he is young and prone to committing fouls, it is that he is a freshman and gets zero respect from the refs, and therefore they are also prone to calling / anticipating fouls. At least two of his 'five' yesterday were clean plays.

I think being a starter might elevate his standing a bit with the officials, as well of course as what it would do for his internal psyche.

I dunno. One thing I always loved about the best running back ever Barry Sanders and WR ever Jerry Rice is they acted like they have been there before and expected success to not do all that other stuff. That can apply in ither sports too. I'm not saying that's my personality and that others have to be that way but you can be very good or even elite without to outwardly extremly emotional.

This should no longer surprise anyone.
