Because I have no self control, I sauntered over to TigerBoard. They are taking the loss surprisingly well. But I was surprised by the amount of statements like "they played really well and we nearly beat them" or similar.

We... didn't play all that well. This team has a whole other gear available if we can every find the way to shift into it.
Thank you for bravely going onto the TigerBoard, washing the stench off, and then reporting back, so none of us had to.

In addition to so many other great posts, I’ll just add one point. If you want this game ever switched to a generic home-and-home just like every other series, you’re insane.
Haha. My wife and I were at the game and sat in the middle of Miznoz fans. My wife is definitely what I would classify as a casual Illini fan, but she gets nervous for them. She initially thought it was unfair to have the game in St Louis every year because it's in Missouri. She is very intelligent, but I had to point out that it's geographically near middle in a large metro area, AND this year, the arena was probably 60% orange -- there's no problem to have in in StL. I told her a home-and-home series would lose all of the appeal that the St Louis series has, especially since Miznoz's arena probably also doubles as a sewage treatment site.

What really ticked me off is they showed 50 replays of Gates on the court and the announcers didn't mention Peyton Marshall's body toss a single time. Maybe it was mentioned at halftime but I doubt it - had the game DVR'd and skipped it.
Nope. Not a peep at any time. @Retro62 and I sat in his living room with our jaws on the floor and steam coming out of our ears.

No matter how much you hate ESPN, it's insufficient.

For DBPR, higher = better. Ben is #3 on the team. Only one data point, but, Underwood is no dummy so obviously sees something as well. Wonder how much people would be harping on his D if his shots were falling.
(And, no, KB’s rating sure doesn’t meet the eye test….just one data point)

Do the refs get reviewed/evaluated? The throw down against Mroz and foul on KJ were pretty egregious. Can’t imagine there not being some repercussions for the zebras for these misses

The refs do get evaluated for each game and it impacts their placements during post season play. Also, during the ncaa tourney, they evaluate refs and that too contributes to who is placed for, sweet 16s, elite 8s and final 4s, etc.

Just had the time to watch yesterday's game. The illegal screens, forearms, and football defense deployed by Mizzou. Was absolutely horrible. 80% of their team should have been fouled out with 10 minutes to go. What in the name of referees were those blind idiot's watching.

Don't forget they do have a major in Trailer Park Management as well 😆

When he replaced Humrichous
Wholeheartedly agree. I've held off calling for Humrichous to have reduced PT because I kept hoping to see something as to why the staff were so high on him coming into the year. But it has become apparent that he lacks the skills to be a key player at this level.
I think Booth should play ahead of Humrichous, at least get a chance to show what he can do. You can't tell me that Booth would be worse at defense and rebounding than Humrichous. Booth is taller, quicker, more likely to intimidate opponents and block shots with his size and long arms. Maybe he doesn't practice well. Too laid back for Underwood?
Just don't see how Underwood can continue playing Humrichous 22-28 mpg. His limited ability to be anything other than a spot-up three-point shooter is glaring.
As many have said here, if he can't shoot at least 40% from beyond the arc, he contributes next to nothing.
Our last three opponents have gone at him repeatedly on offense because they see he's weak defensively. He's 6-9 and has three rebounds in last three games? Get serious.
Another concerning aspect of Humrichous' overuse is that you risk losing Riley and Booth over lack of PT when they should/could be important next year. Humrichous isn't working out, and Underwood should not put him ahead of guys who have a future with the team.

Recap: Illini are pretty good. Stop those turnovers and all will be well. But I think it's simply a case of a very young team jelling. Lotta talent.

But I cannot forgive Kylan for missing that last free throw and ruining a 100% FT team shooting day. Bench him!

Seriously, Kylan is great. Leader, point the way. Welcome back to Champaign.

Illini: don't take Chiicago State for granted.

And more Morez. Watched him llke a hawk - and he's a rebounding hawk! Hope he remains an Illini a long time.

Happy Holidays Everyone!
-3.5 bettors (me) were a little upset…

So, are you telling me that the refs in the 2001 Midwest Regional vs. Arizona were some of the most highly rated guys in the country? They called us for 36 fouls.

I like BU's overall success at Illinois and putting together some good players this year. HIs subbing has been very frustrating over the years, very much this year. Booth gives length and can pop a 3, he will get better if given some minutes.
Booth isn’t strong enough to defend or rebound as he demonstrated in those early games. Not nearly as strong as WR.

Reasons we won: 40-30 rebound margin. 22-23 FT

Reasons we nearly lost: 18 TO's. Terrible 3PT%. Horrible officiating.

Speaking of 3PT shooting we are not shooting it well. In non cupcake games we are barely above 30% and that's with including the one outlier against Arky. If we are going to play 4 or 5 out we need better shooters. Gonna need to spend some practice time on sets that will get more inside offense.

So Carey Booth is a slightly better defender than Kylan....

I will duck immediately after posting this for the ensuing food thrown at me....but if you watch the slow mo replay of Morez going to the floor during the T on Gates, Morez was falling backwards as the guy wrapped his arms around him.

So it wasn't as egregious as it looked full speed. He definitely helped him to the floor, but he didn't really throw him.

Hoping my sarcasm meter off, and you not outright dismissing, but sample size obviously matters and so many on here have made it clear they believe Ben’s sample size is too large.

OFFICIATING: Missouri coach Gates criticized the officiating in Sunday's Braggin Rights game and with good reason. There were 43 fouls called in the game, 60 free throws shot. Thousands of fans in the Arena and many thousand more viewing the game of TV that paid good money or tuned in to see 2 rival teams play basketball NOT TO SEE the refs take the spotlight. I have watched many college games so far this year from all conferences and it seems more and more we see referees call phantom fouls or witness a player get mugged and nothing called. The phantom fouls are generally called on a break away layup when most times the referee has already made up his mind that the defender will foul the player going for a layup. A lot of times the defender doesn't touch him. The same thing on a defender going up to challenge an offensive player shooting a 2 or 3 pointer and falls to the floor, well he must have been fouled or he wouldn't have fell to the floor. One of the worst officials is Gene Carstensen who starts blowing the whistle coming out of the locker room.
My point is call the game fairly for both sides but most of all let the teams decide the game on the floor and not by a crucial call or at least none of the phantom calls. The NCAA needs to get these officials under control and not turn these games into who can make the most free throws.
After watching this scenario for many seasons I am beginning to believe that during the early non-conference schedule that the refs are playing the spread. It has appeared to me that they call these games in a manner that insures that the final score, more often than not, aligns with the morning line. Sorry to sound like a conspiracy nut. Still, these phantom fouls and missed calls are happening so often that one has to wonder if these guys are just padding their retirement accounts.

Maybe he was trying to catch Morez. Or give him a big teddy bear hug.
