This team certainly has the ability to be the best team Brad has ever put together. There’s not a single guy on the floor that can be left unchecked.

Andrej- can take over a game by himself for stretches, as seen last night.

Kylan- returning to sharpshooter form, attacks the rim, can create his own shot or get others involved

Mirk- Cleans up misses, makes the hockey assist pass, can step into a three, put the ball on the deck and drive, finish around the rim

Tomi- 7”2 shooter, elite vision, can finish around the cup with a push shot, catch and shoot from midrange, can finish off both shoulders… elite center.

Wagler- Good midrange game. Has a very stoic and poised style of play, which is great compliment to an aggressive Kylan & Andrej. Prettiest jumper on the team, and is pure from deep & the line. Length allows him to shoot and finish over other teams guards. Untapped potential.

Ben- Will take & can make catch and shoot threes. Microwave shooter off the bench. Improved “booty ball” game with a solid 10-15 foot fade/jumper. Sneaky bounce.

Jake- 3 point specialist

Big Z- Can do everything Tomi can do but is more athletic. Good handle, will put the ball on the floor, will shoot and make threes if left open. All at 7”2

Petro-(?) we will see, but certainly has proven against other pros that he belongs. A true old school PG.

That’s 9/9. Have we ever had a team in the Underwood era where EVERYONE can be a threat on that side of the ball?

2023-24
- Ty didn’t shoot, defenses sagged & even put their 5 on him.
- No true 5 man. Coleman playing out of position.

Man… TJ was such a killer. Doesn’t have anything to do with this point I’m making.. but he willed that team to a BTT championship & an E8 playing 4 on 5 offensively and with no true center other than Dain who thought he was a guard. All time Illini legend forever.

2020-21:
- Damonte shot over 50% from three that year but that was an anomaly.

- Curbelo was a very poor outside shooter

i mean.. these teams aren’t slouches. Brad has basically rolled out lineups where there’s no more than 2 or 3 guys who you trust to make an outside jumper are on the floor at a time. Certainly Kofi, Belo, Ty, Damonte (4/5 years), Dain, Payne, Sencire, Amani, Morez are guys you want taking a three. And we’ve had at least 1 of those guys in our rotation every year since 2016.

Now, Ty may come back this year- I’d be happy if he does obviously- but for the time being… everyone we play, any lineup combination, we have guys who are threats from all 3 levels of the floor. An abundance of riches, one we haven’t seen- maybe ever.

There won’t be too many times we are calling on one guy to go get us a bucket. The pressure that was on guys like KJ, Will, TJ, Ayo, Kofi was a lot to rely on. We saw what happens when our superstar was hurt. Or if Kofi was in foul trouble. Or if Ayo was loose with the ball. Brad has built so many teams with a star (or multiple) and a lot of complimentary pieces.

This years team doesn’t have “complimentary” pieces around 1 guy. Or 2..or 3… they have a team that has 5 dudes on the floor at all times (Ok, maybe calling Jake a “dude” is a stretch, but if he is open I’m expecting it to go in) that can go get you one. Or take over. Andrej not hitting shots? Ok Kylan go attack the rim. Tomi struggling? Ok let’s bring his twin brother in. Ben not hitting shots or rebounding? Jake it’s your turn.

Let’s go win a natty.

Circling back after watching again...

Its cliché, but I do believe when everyone is healthy...this is the most skilled/talented group as a whole that Brad has ever had.

1. Only 5 assists bothers me... but watching it again, alot of it was what the defense was giving us and our guys were just better (outside of Toppin, who is a beast,) at taking it 1 on 1. I also think that the assists will go way up when Tomi gets back...his passing and offensive IQ will go a long way. But I still want to see that ball pop around more next game. Make the extra pass and get easy buckets.

2. First step and getting down hill. Andrej is way quicker then I thought, much better athlete and much better down hill. At 6'7 he's a force to get to the rim. Wagler is also a much quicker athlete then he's given credit for. He plays with great pace and almost looks slow...but man when he decides he's going to make a move and get by you...he gets to his spots...and being 6'6 only helps. The hype is real.

3. Mihailo continues to be the most mysterious player to me. The team seems super tight lipped on him...how good he is...what he brings. Field of 68 tried to get Kylan and Andrej to give a scouting report on him and they literally would not even give a player comp.

I dont know what he is yet... but they certainly won't talk about him. Get him healthy and I cant wait to watch him. If he is good...maaaaan, a lightning quick lead guard...who is old...and experienced. If he's good, this team is cooking with major gas.

This isn't even brining up Lee, who could give huge defensive upside.

The talent here is immense. Get everyone healthy and get everyone playing in sync.

With the assists and driving its all about the reads. TT was playing straight up and really wasn't bringing a lot of help on the drives which means the right play is to take it strong and finish. I think their strategy was to try and stay home on shooter to limit kickouts which makes sense given Illinois propensity for shooting threes.

Warning sign to other teams, if you dont help on drives we've got multiple dudes who can and will punish you one on one. And then when you do help, kick and wide open 3s. Good luck picking what to defend.

This is exactly the right take here- teams have to decide what they are going to take away and what they will tolerate. Tech chose staying tight to shooters- which leads to mismatches for someone like Andrej (please don't assume he's just going to be a 20 point bucket every ya'll). It was a perfect team and strategy for Andrej to exploit. Just like defensively we mostly chose to let Toppin eat- and held Anderson to 8 and shut off the water for most of tech's good 3 point shooters. Thankfully our strategy worked 4 points better lol.

Okay, if I missed a mention of this game, my bad. As for regular season games in the last 25 years, the best was 2004 in my opinion.

Illinois Overpowers No. 1 Wake Forest, 91-73

Note: It was mentioned in Curbelo's list

Yes... it would. Because a take foul is unnecessary. But thats not the way the game is called ever. So it was a bull!!!! call. End of story.

"Finish at the rim like Andrej". What about Ayo? Seems like he made a living doing that.

We might've been called for more flagrants. Any play that's not an absolute attempt on the ball and has a guy hit the ground (including flops) is an automatic risk. "Intentional fouls to prevent..." are not a thing.

In my opinion we should've fouled more (other than Boswell).

My sense was the opposite. Once JT had the ball inside, wall up without fouling. If he got the rebound, forget it. No sense in getting into foul trouble and giving away a bunch of and ones. If Tomi was available, I'd probably feel differently since our depth would be great.

If the flagrant was called on Illinois why wasn't the intentional fouls by TT on Boswell and Keaton Wagler not called the same? Wagler was brought down to the floor and it was intentionally done to stop the clock.
My only thought is maybe it's a point of emphasis for officials this year and this crew just got overzealous with it? Steph Curry just got a ridiculous flagrant 1 on a close out last night (first of his career). Regarding the TT fouls - they made more of an effort to reach for the ball.

It was still a horrible call on Kylan - as many others have pointed out, the official has to have been game situation awareness than that, giving TT a chance to tie the game down 5 because you didn't think a player reached for the ball enough on an intentional foul that was in no way harmful or malicious simply can't happen.

It would be like giving a guy a foul for a full court heave at the buzzer as he jumps into a defender who wasn't stationary. You simply can't call that.

I don’t want to dismiss Texas Tech as anything other than a really really good team, but I have to wonder if paying Toppin that much money has created shortcomings elsewhere in their lineup that might prevent them from becoming a really great team. Toppin was nearly unstoppable last night — nearly. Once we put Bam on him and threw a double team at him we were able to take control.
They missed a few good players like us so potentially we will see a final four rematch.

Hello Loyalty - it's been a minute. Finally remembered my login information. All love from me towards this team. Really hope we get Ty back at some point before the B1G tournament, or at the latest - full practice participation leading into NCAA Tournament. Need lock down stretch defenders in crunch time... Mirk can do A LOT of things... but shiftiness on perimeter that turn into lateral cuts/slashes to the rim on the defensive end is NOT one of them. I L L -
