Illinois 82, DePaul 73 POSTGAME

I thought it was a pretty big message to see Alstork on the bench down the stretch. That wouldn't have happened a year ago. I still think Alstork will become a big part of this team, but it's good to see that BU has no problem with sitting an upperclassmen.

Wasn't Alstork's game tonight with only 1 point and 4 TO's, yet he'll definitely come around and should have several great games ahead.

Nice to beat a quality opponent by 9 and think that it should have been more. Seemed like there were a handful of players that carried our team in various stretches of the game: Smith, Nichols, Damonte, and Lucas all had some real good stretches.

Great to see Underwood get so much from so many different guys. We have too many defensive lapses, but I get the feeling that these can be taught. The mindset and attitude of the defense is great. I thought Damonte played some great defense in stretches. He seems super long with his arms!

Was hoping we'd have a big time Mark Smith coming out party, but refs deprived us of that.

Career high 21pts for Smith......not too shabby outing

Good news: Mark Smith is awesome, AJ/Alstork/Damonte play well even when they aren't scoring, Black seems improved, Excited to see what Kipper and Trent become as Illini

Bad news: Tejon looked overmatched by a DePaul freshman (couple great plays at crunch time though), Greg E is going to have to play this year even though he's not ready, 3-point shooting seems really streaky

Great news: big win tonight for our season hopes. I L L!!!

Luckily there is enough playing time for all of them. I actually think Frazier will kind of fall behind once Tejon stops getting in foul trouble.

TJL seems to be getting ticky tac fouls, alot of reaching, that will go away. Getting alot of minutes for many. Smith, Williams and Frazier showing why they will be good. The fouls for both teams ruined game. 3-0, we take it. Rest up and get ready for Sunday. Alstork please shoot the ball.;):illinois:

Quality opponent? DePaul? They suck. That said, you have to beat bad teams.

Am I wrong, or did Mark Smith finish 12-for-12 from the free throw line?

If so, that’s awesome to see us excel at the stripe so far.

Let's be honest, 3-pt shooting has been bad. At what point do we stop saying "once we start hitting 3's we'll be even better"? It's not just that we are missing, but each game we have thrown up a handful of bad misses. Even good shooters get in slumps, but good shooters rarely miss badly. The bad misses are what worry me more than the actual 3-pt percentage.

I haven’t been able to watch more than an hour this season so far. Do you think that the 3pt struggles could be from a lack of rhythm in the offense? I feel like that could be a primary factor based on the little bit I’ve watched.

If so, I’d expect those rhythm 3’s off of transition to start falling.

Smith has made his first 19 FT.. I don't want to jinx him but I wonder what the record is for made FT before a miss as an Illini.

Night and day from last year, these kids fight. Underwood has their respect from what I have seen so far. Very bright future. Refreshing to see Underwood sit someone when they make a stupid mistake.

Finke on AJ: In the past you've thought of him as shooter, but he's done so much more than that. 9 rebounds tonight. He's been huge for us.

DePaul coach Dave Leitao: Mark Smith was probably the most poised player in the game on both sides. What he did physically.. But his mental approach for a freshman was impressive.

Underwood: A good slugfest. Punch, counterpunch kind of game.

Underwood: Hugged Kipper after a practice this week. He'll get a hug tomorrow.

Underwood: Once we settled down and ran some offense, we had some breakthroughs tonight.

Underwood: Aaron with 9 rebounds... He's just finding ways to stuff the stat sheet.

Underwood: All around, I was pleased. I think there was some growth. One-day prep. Team coming in on Sunday that is very well coached and very good offensive team.

Underwood: Starting to like the balance that we have and the versatility that we're showing.

Underwood: Mark Smith was in a great place tonight in terms of his mental preparation. Never going to tell him to back off.

Underwood: As we go, Mark's identity is going to continue to develop. He's a handful.

Underwood: Te'Jon's biggest issue is that he's gotten fouls within the first minute. He's the engine. He's doing just fine. Just need to keep him out of foul trouble in the first 2 or 3 mins of the game.

Underwood: Long night tonight. Watch tonight's game and put together a few things for our team to watch. And then it's on to Marshall.

So far in 3 games, I see a team that brings good energy. They fight and scrap better than we have for years. Love the charges we are taking on defense and I am excited about the way we get to the line and then make our free throws. On the negative: we make stupid fouls, have defensive breakdowns, and are not a good perimeter shooting team.
