Illinois 82, Rutgers 66 POSTGAME

There were three possessions in a row last night where we looked legit.

Pick and role to Mav
Double down on Mav and a 3 by JCL.
Feed to Mav and hitting a cutter for an easy layup.

There are some signs of life out there and Mav is in the middle of it offensively. Never thought I would write that.

Well the key to this are two things: 1. A back-to-the-basket scorer who can easily knock down 15 footers as well. This helps a great deal with spacing because it is extremely hard to defend post players one-on-one therefore teams either collapse and help leaving the perimeter open or hope their guy wins a defensive battles. 2. you need guards willing to feed the post and a big willing to kick it back out. I think Mav has done this better in the limited action Thorne got this season. Also, I have liked Lewis' play in the B1G and I think he's done better than the stat line.

Great to see the team play well, even against a depleted Rutgers team. We watch basketball so we can watch the team win, right?

Honest question here: Who do you think is worse, Rutgers or Chicago State?

As of this morning, 2/17/2016, Rutgers is 6-20 and Chicago St is 4-23. It would appear Chicago St has the (dis) honor.

The WORST TEAM IN THE CONFERENCE, playing without their leading scorer (Sanders 16.2 ppg), outscored us by 6 in the second half. In our home stadium.

Happy for the win, but there are still miles and miles to go before we are a competitive Big Ten team.

All those people taking the Illini at -4 in the second half have to wonder why. Now all of the people who saw the -4 and knew it was too good to be true made some money by going against the for sure pick🤑

Of Chicago State's 4 wins, 1 is over a D1 team. Rutgers has 5 wins vs. D1 teams.

However, Chicago State's win is over WIU Kenpom #221, better than any Rutgers win. Rutger's wins are vs. Kenpom #271, 289, 305, 323, 351 -- there are 351 teams.

Those are two terrible teams.

Was Tate's 3 minutes last night in a blowout win, the beginning of the end??

It might be...he looks downright lost out there. It looked to me that last night he had the least desire, motivation, excitement of ANY player in the building...I wonder what is going on?

The time he did get, was exactly when Rutgers cut into the nearly 20 point lead too. I believe with Tate in the game it went from 18 or 20 to a 13 point lead. it happened quickly too. It wasn't entirely all on him, because I believe Austin was in the game with him. The offensive flow just came grinding to a halt and defensively they gave up some really easy transition buckets.

Confirming your logic, Ken Pom has Rutgers at 284 (horrible), but Chicago State at 343 (out of 351). We are a lofty 125 :D

Does Ken Pom give a rating for Rutgers without Sanders though, the Rutgers team we played last night had to be much closer?

Tate's confidence appeared to go down considerably after his hand injury and he never has been able to get back on track. This has been really obvious with his free-throw shooting. Too bad for him since he and Lewis were pretty much going to be sharing the PG load throughout the year, but that's never materialized.

First off, I am still a John Groce supporter but I noticed something on the post game presser that made me go hmmm. Near the beginning there is a point where Coach Groce is talking about seeing signs of improvement as a team. Right when he introduces the topic, Malcolm looks behind Coach Groce to make eye contact and there seems to be something being communicated. Any ideas on what that was about?

It's around the 1:15 mark into the video. I saw Hill lean back and look towards Mav, but I didn't notice him say anything.

I looks to me that Malcolm looks at Maverick and grins as to say, "you are the one he's talking about and we are playing better because of your play"

This is more believable than Malcolm disagreeing with coach's sentiment. Because the sentiment is 1,000% accurate.
