Illinois 85, Minnesota 52 POSTGAME

Was Tubby-for-Baby Pitino the worst coaching change of all time?

And that isn't just 20/20 hindsight. This has gone about the way anyone would have predicted at the time. What a desperate, stupid lunge for a coach that was clearly unprepared for this job.

Great game overall. Some points I thought stood out:

- Came out shooting the ball very well, and when we hit a small drought in the end of the 1st, we didn't panic and drop our defense.
- Coming out poor defensively in the 2nd did not last long. Groce took a time out and set them straight really quick.
- Lots of different guys scored tonight, love seeing the ball distribution amid many people knocking down threes. We need to shoot that well or better against Iowa.
- Nunn, Hill and the other starters get some rest by Groce at the end of the game, great idea for a (hopefully) long tournament weekend.
- We didn't back off offensively even when our backups were in. We had a few bad possessions, but overall got good looks and got them in foul trouble adding to our lead.

My wish is that Iowa underestimates us a little bit. I think we need them to be cocky and then we knock them in the mouth the first half to have a chance to win. It won't be easy because Iowa is very very good. Shut down Uthoff and we may have a shot.

Great win Illini- Do that type shooting vs Iowa and the dream continues.

Spread started at -8.5 rose to -11.5 easy cover.

Just listened to radio post game - Malcolm at the end spoke up to give a shout out to how happy they were for Liss to score and commented on how hard he works. It was nice to hear.

Malcolm seems to generally be just one hell of a good kid. Nice to hear that for sure. The bench sure went nuts when he scored.

Two broken teams duke it out. Glad our team blew out their team.

We will have to rebound a lot better than last time out against Iowa to win. That being said it was a good win today and hopefully we can make a bit of a run

Being the son of a legendary basketball helps in the hiring process.

Rick Jr. just doesn't seem like a coach I'd want to play for. I remember The Journey when they focused on Minny and I distinctively remember him chastising a player (I believe it was a PG) in a very bully-ish way. During games, when there's a time-out and the camera focuses on him, his facial reaction is usually his mouth open in a disapproving way as he stares down a player, or he's talking back at a player. Nasty.

Missed game but caught stats....6 players with 2 or more assists. That's the way to do it. Great to see MF's stoke come back.

That shout out at 5:45 was pure class. That is something that should make our entire fan base proud.

Seems spoiled when he does things like that, like his name alone allows him to speak to his players in any way he wants. Don't know if that's how he really thinks, but it looks that way.

I am sure he is also very frustrated though, and that could be the reason. Have to give Groce real credit for not letting his obvious frustration affect how he treats his team.
