I think you’re right.I looked at a couple of his highlight reels…(sadly I was only able to listen to the radio against EIU) :(

It looks to me like he has a tendency to sometimes wrap his left, off-hand/guide-hand around the backside of the ball; rather than having the off-hand more to the side of the ball. (In other words, this grip makes
it harder to get the off-hand the heck out the way of his shooting hand.)

Also, if he is momentarily late getting that off-hand, off of the ball it can push right. It can also, slightly drag through the ball in the opposite direction; creating a simultaneous downward spin that runs counter to the desirable backspin of the shooting hand. But that’s just me pretending to be a shot-doctor. Lol

The examples I was looking at were in his jumpshot. I’m curious to actually SEE a game to watch his free-throw mechanics…but I digress.

I think overall he has an average to fairly good command of his shot. I don’t think he
does it all the time…but occasionally it looks like it crops up.
We were in section 106 last night, closer to the court. I had a pretty good angle on the FT Rodgers took last night. All of them curved right at the last minute.

Nothing some work on mechanics can't fix. I'm sure the staff already knows and is talking to him about it

Regarding free throws, one of the main reasons Wisconsin won so many close games last year despite being - arguably - less athletically gifted than it’s B1G opponents was because it’s players consistently made their free throws. Not just at the end, but throughout the game. Because they didn’t leave many points on the table, they were able to keep games close and pull them out in the end. Uncharacteristically, they missed a lot of free throws in the season finale against Nebraska, allowing the undermanned Cornhuskers to stay close and pull out a win. Missed free throws are points you’re not adding to your lead.

BTW, now that I have seen Sincere Harris, I am glad he chose #1. That would be a great tradition to have for somebody deserving of shut-down defensive left handed guard. It is no surprise he contributed to 2 state titles. He absolutely plays to win (and not lose). He may have better offensive talent than Trent.

This is completely irrelevant and may already have been covered. When we play Purdue, Edey will be guarding Hawkins, right? Which means he'll be about 23 feet from the hoop (which is close to where CoHawk hit his first one). And that means TSJ has 14 slamma-jammas against Purdue.

Also, Mayer hit his first bucket on a backcut. I do not remember the last time the Illini scored a layup on a backcut.

Lots of things to clean up...but the glimpses of awesomeness were, well, awesome
Edey will probably play 10-12 feet out with his hands up. You better believe their coach has some different defensive maneuvers to counter this.

The good -

Terrance Shannon Jr. and Coleman Hawkins are a Top 2 players we can feel more than good about. Coleman is going to play in the NBA if he can keep stroking the three like that. We know who the Alphas on this team are, and we can feel confident that we are in good hands.

Dain Dainja is legit, he is going to be playing real minutes and we can feel good about it. Nice to see a guy that's waited a long time get an opportunity and play well.

The bad -

The foul shooting outside of TSJ was atrocious. Hopefully it was just some first game jitters, but Rodgers can't see the floor if you aren't be able to make those dude.

Team looked very reckless and out of control at times.

All in all, good 30 point opening win. Lots of things to improve on and keep getting better. Good to see so many guys play big minutes. Looks like a deep team that is going to have competition for rotation spots well into the season. Lots of potential, just need to put it together to have the makings of a great team.
You’re not keeping Rodgers off the floor that kids a baller

If Rogers shoots 20% FT for the season he will be on the bench. You are looking at Ben Simmons JR

I kept getting surprised looking up at the scoreboard and seeing his stat line. He just makes plays out there. I was telling my friend he is going to have AT LEAST one triple double in his career
Ty was like that playing on that prestigious HS all star team last year, too. Just seems to love rebounding and helping team mates score (who were all rated far above him IIRC and are playing now for top notch programs like ours) - he fit right in with that caliber of player almost effortlessly it seemed.

Eventually, he will start to score more as well, then he'll really be something. Hopefully around Jan. He's really a unique, interesting talent, IMO. I'm going to love watching him develop.

In fairness to Mayer he's been injured. Has had back problems since he arrived in July.
He didn't look healthy last night and seemed really frustrated by that, especially on that play that EIU dunked on him.
He wasn't dogging it I don't think or Brad would have been lighting him up.

I don't think so either. Back problems can really limit you. Hopefully it gets better.

Co-Hawk is not going to shoot like that every game. That's the beauty of it all. Mayer may go off for 20 next game.
Agreed CoHawk won’t. And yes Mayer or someone else could be hot the next night. I’d just prefer it not take someone scorching it to get to 35% as a team. Cuz there will be nights no one is scorching it. so need better , more consistent distance shooting overall.

Big Ten Team FT% last year:

Maryland 75.9%
Ohio State 75.7%
Michigan State 75%
Iowa 74.9%
Michigan 74.6%
Wisconsin 74.3%

Brad has to make it clear - if you can't hit your free throws you don't play.

Some awful form that needs to be cleaned up.

Kofi was hackashaqed and still did much better than our freshman

Or - and bear with me, now - BU game-plans for TSJ to shoot a minimum of half the total team free throws to offset those lousy bums who bring to the court much less important factors, such as top-notch defense, rebounding, assists, 3-pointers, etc.
[ /s, if necessary]

I think it’ll go up once Mayer and RJ figure it out. We all know RJ can shoot lights out but went 0/5 and seemed like he was lacking confidence all game

The lads came through with a spirited effort and such a fast paced attack it was.........If you blink you might miss a tomahawk slam by TSJ or a great bounce pass by Ty in the paint for a deuce...........I was suffering with a stomach virus but the play of the Illini was the best medicine , along with healthy doses of Pepto Bismol and 420...............................

What I witnessed was a squad of highly skilled players without defined roles yet , showing what a vast difference this years edition of the Illini will be from the last 3 years.........

The full court press or delayed zone press accomplished what it was designed for......To slow down the opponents possession and pick up some steals in the process............

Sincere Harris was a Tazmanian devil with his pressure D and showed advanced footwork for a true freshman.......He is already a fan favorite and deservedly so.........

Cohawk with an impressive shooting display and overall great floor game.......TSJ showed his game is a little bit of everything and his penetration into the paint was rarely stopped before he got to the rim for a bucket or a foul.........

The only anxious parts of the game for me was the abysmal FT shooting.............................I'm sure this will be a major part of practice this week and I hope nerves had more to do with it than poor form............

This is a great time for Illini nation..........great FB season and it looks like it's gonna be another great season for BB........It really really does........................
