Illinois 89, Detroit 69 POSTGAME

#52
If we allow Detroit to score 69, how much will we allow B1G opponents? I was hoping to see more progress on defense because we'll need it very soon.

There was something like 79 possessions in last night's game. 0.87 points per possession is good defense.

Tempo will be slower in conference play.

A few takeaways:

1. Thorne's inside defense was just awful. I watched him, specifically, on several plays. Hogan schooled him in 2nd half (when MT got most of the minutes at the 5). It was a real beat-down. Hogan looked very good! In contrast, the announcers were complimenting Mav's help defense a few times.

2. TJL got only a few minutes. Disappointing. Tate led in assists, but what stands out to me were his two opportunities to make a shot beyond 3 feet. (A) a terribly missed three pointer, and (B) a 6 footer in the lane that he chose to pass rather than shoot, resulting in a turnover. Tate won't get criticized and he wasn't horrible, but TJL could have contributed just as much IMHO.

3. Tate and Tracy played a lot of minutes together once again. I'm still thinking it's a prelude to the upcoming WVU game.

Hey --- a win is a win. Onward to 5-0 this Monday! Then the real non-conference schedule begins.

1 - I think most major conference teams would take Hogan and his motor off the bench. Commentator's implied he played to the level of competition, but I liked his effort and he has some good moves.

2 - I thought TJL looked a step behind even in garbage time. He had the nice drive, but on defense he was a step slow and he struggled breaking the press that Abrams and Tate handled easily all night. He's a freshman, the game is still too fast for him right now. Tate has holes (the same lack of a jumper that has always been the issue), but right now he is the better player.

That all being said... I think the game went really well. But we can always improve!

GO ILLINI!

Really, not much to complain about, overall. OTOH, lots of things to work on. I hope the guys are itching for a real test, as I'm not sure more cupcake games are going to help us nearly as much as tournament level competition will.

I see some weaknesses with this team that make me think we're going to struggle against a good portion of the BIG. I think all of Michigan, Wiscy, Indiana, Purdue, tOSU, MSU are going to be rough games, at least from what little I've seen thus far. Lotta time to get better though, if we're hungry.

One thing I need to add is a shout out about Hill. He's on another level. A couple guys with potential I was hoping to see more improvement, but Hill is looking all BIG and every bit as advertised from reports. TA also deserves a shout out for what he's bringing us. Team overall is going to need to kick it up on defense, though to have success.

I would say for the level of competition it is not good defense .

We had 10 assists as a team even though we shot over 50% which tells me we won because we flat out had more talent not because we played really well.

For a team with so much experience it still struggles to play well as a unit . At one point you have TA,JT,MH,MM,and a a random sophomore on the floor and the offense doesnt get past the first option against even average competition .

This team is off to a good start but it has a lot of work to do

Wow you saw TJL way different then I did when it comes to the press. Tejon has better handle and never appeared rushed. He did pickup his dribble on one occasion with no apparent reason but made a good pass.
It may just be me but it never appears that getting a 10 or 8 second call (whichever it is right now) I likely to happen with Tejon. Without looking like it he gets the ball up the floor faster in my opinion.
Tate seems to bring that fear into the equation for me with the wasted time. Tate did have the best game I have seen him play. I hope he continues on this level for the rest of the year.
Still hoping to see Tejon more and more. When Big10 play happens if team lay off Tate the offensive prowess will become a definitive model for tick I hope. We will need all 5 guys scoring if we are going to make any big moves in big10 or the tourney.:shield:

To be fair on the evaluation of our defense beyond the final box score, Detroit hit a number of deeep prayers towards the end of the game.

They must have shot 85% in the last 6 minutes of the game.

Happy that we made free-throws to avoid a bad beat on what was looking like a comfortable cover of the -20 vegas line.

They also had 3 gift hoops in the first half - a banked in 3 pointer, another 3 that hit on the back of the hoop and just fell in, and finally a fast break layup that I think just bounced off their player's hand and went in.

Well if you could cite anything to support that...

DM is still a NCAA D1 team. This is still basketball, they get the ball after we get the ball. Over a lot of possessions, they are going to score some points. 0.87 is a good defensive number no matter what. Kentucky gave up 0.9 to Canisius, guess their defense sucks too...

Lucas also had the turnover when he stepped out of bounds because he dribbled into too many players. More importantly, he definitely looked a beat behind on defense.

I don't think we have to worry about many backcourt violations no matter who is bringing it up.

I like Lucas, I just think he is a freshman and it shows. I don't understand why this board seems to think an unproven, non-blue chip recruit is going to step in and be an effective player. Given time, I think he can. I see Chester Frazier, this board seems to see Frank Williams.

I think Tate will lose clock, but to Black, AJ, and DJW as we trust Abrams more.

Because that unproven non-chip recruit has stepped in and played effectively...but with that said Tate is the better option at this juncture.

No, I mean it's already included in his work. He projects the actual result, no modifications needed. From his site:

Ah, that explains the difference --I'm just looking at his front page margins, so you need to add the effect of the 1.4% or so on each side. Where did you see the prediction?

I know that for subscribers, he gives a prediction of every game.
Not sure if that is available to a non-subscriber or not.
You can look at the individual team's own page or you can look at each evening's games in their entirety to see the predicted outcomes, along with his odds of each team winning their game.
