We have said the polls don’t matter for literally a decade plus now. I think up till say 4-5 years ago that was “sort” of true? The Net was a thing, but it was sort of undefined?

In the last 4-5 years it has been very clear that the metrics are much more relevant than any or all of the polls. It seems really true as media darlings like Gonzaga are not given the royal treatment of being over polled? Our metrics say 2/3 seed right now, and with a real possibility to get a 1 seed if we over perform what the metrics say we will do from here? Looks good to me!

I thought 8 was going to be our ceiling. I did not think we would jump MSU, but I do find it silly that MSU can jump 3 spots while UI jumps 2 considering who they played this week. The AP voters are definitely just looking at the 3 losses compared to everyone else.

I’m looking at Iowa State’s schedule… what is their good win other than Purdue? They beat Purdue, we beat Purdue. I obviously get one was more convincing, but it’s the same thing on the resume sheet, plus we have many other great wins to point to.

Last week they lost to a horrible Cincy squad and got smoked by KU — two embarrassing Ls in one week — and dropped a mere 7 spots.

Gonzaga being 6th is also quite laughable given their conference play.

Gonzaga should have dropped a spot after starting out against a mid San Fran team up 20-8 only to only win by 2. At home, even.

It's rankings inertia. Iowa St. was #2 two weeks ago. They dropped significantly after losing two, but I think there's kind of an upper limit to what voters are willing to drop you from one poll to the next. Likewise voters seem way more hesitant than they should be to change the order of teams that all keep winning. It's dumb. You can have teams with the same record, and make a judgment call on how they are all ranked. Maybe you're right, maybe you're wrong. But with voters, as long as both teams win all their games the next week, no matter how they do it, they are not likely to change that order. If voters were sitting down with the new results, and really giving these teams a fresh, honest assessment every week, you'd see a lot more leapfrogging and just generally rankings fluctuating a lot more from week to week, not achieving stability until later in the season.

At least with basketball I think we eventually end up with enough games for voters to get teams generally where they need to be, and negates the effect of preseason rankings which shouldn't even exist. Where this annoys me way more is football, where preseason rankings have lasting impacts that even end up impacting playoff selection (see, e.g., how SEC being overrated in preseason rankings leads to SEC having more teams in playoffs than anyone else every season, despite recent trend of those teams just constantling p@#%ing all over themselves in the postseason).
