On Ivisic, if he continues to shoot like this I think he's gone. Riley seems for sure gone.

As of now, I think Ivisic is for sure back next year. I would say Riley is 50/50. KJ is gone. Kylan/Morez/Ivisic will be the core 3 we build around for sure next year
I know the answer is most likely no, but any scenario where you see Ty coming back next year?

End of the game instead of dribbling out the clock, KJ just kind of left the ball behind him. He was still pretty much between ball and defender, but Ark guy might have been able to pick it up and go down for layup. Looked like Kylan said “nah dude” (sentiment, not actual words) and KJ picked up ball and held it until 0:00. Obviously points wouldn’t have impacted game outcome, but looked a little disrespectful — though don’t think that was KJ’s intent.
Why was is not double dribble when KJ picked the ball up and started dribbling for a second time?

Taking nothing from KJ who’s been phenomenal …but very impressed with Boswell’s play of late, too. Several noted concern at how well he’d fit for both scoring and defense (me too) given all the talent on this team. Think he’s opened eyes over last few games - was outstanding defending Mark Sears, Boogie Fland, TJ Wagner, etc…all top names…each falling far below their average (KJ, DGL also key here). He has worked hard and deserves some kudos. He kinda reminds me of Deron Williams in a way, always a serious game face…calmly/methodically maneuvering the ball…allowing the game to come to him while bringing a level of confidence. Very happy and thankful for the young man who has come back home.

Also impressive that the Illini performed this way in the 4th game in 9 days.
Either the coaching staff knows how to quickly communicate new ideas to this group, the team has a high basketball IQ and can quickly assimilate this information, or (very likely) a healthy combination of both.

I'm trying to not get too far ahead of things, but the difference between how the team played against Arkansas compared to Alabama was really, really encouraging. I know Arkansas isn't as good as Alabama, but that's still a good basketball team. It seemed like nearly everything that was an issue on offense was significantly improved in the time period between those games, and I thought the defense was better as well.

Just a very pleasant surprise to see this team improve so much in a short time period without a great deal of practice time together.

Going off of this, I think Riley's situation will be one to watch this offseason. Likely in the 20-30 range in the draft. Could come back and put on muscle and go top 10 in a weaker draft the year following. I know that is what mom would prefer.
Can't write anything off this day and age, but Kylan as your PG, Riley as your big-piece wing, two big guys like Ivisic and Morez... that would be awfully good to start with.

Honestly though, PnR is more of a staple thing that teams might adjust to in-game a bit, rather than something that we'd ever just ditch. Every player on the floor can pop out and shoot, so there's also never going to be a scenario where teams can just hard hedge or trap the PnR.
Nobody is ditching PnR and trap or hard hedge won't solve their problems. It's just obvious Arkansas wasn't prepared for our 5 out PnR in the first five minutes. Now other opponents will see it coming so we won't average 48% 3ptp.

It was a big time win. The 3 pt. shooting was no surprise, given the wide open looks we got; great ball movement made that happen....KJ is the real deal and maybe a reliable go-to guy late in close games. Riley got schooled by big, strong defenders; he almost looked lost out there. Given how young he is, there's plenty of time to develop. You leave Tomi open on the perimeter and he will make you pay. Not much to complain about defensively either. Now is the time to strap it on for the next 3 games.
Riley was over matched on offense but based on his minutes - he was a better option than others

I hate to offer a suggestion to this squad, but a season ago one of the Bulls stars told Ayo to “know what you are going to do BEGORE you get the ball”. KJ seems to drive into the lane and then figure out what to do next. Seems like as soon as he heads up the lane to draw a triple team at least one big should be heading for an open 3 and KJ should immediately locate him. KJ gets in the trees of the triple team and hesitates for a few seconds looking for the open man.
KJ, while playing well enough yesterday, still has a lot of room for improvement. Still will be some growing pains.

Can’t see Ivisic back next year. Would seem like a very high draft pick to me. Size, shooting. IQ and underrated defense. Arguably MVP at this point.

There's this growing misconception that the staff are like these helpless bystanders that just have to wait and see what the players do at the end of the season. Not the case. They have a ton of influence over what a player decides to do after the season. There's no reason to think the staff won't try to return the core of the team. And there's no reason to think the staff won't be successful in retaining the core of the team. This year can be very good. But the upshot for this roster is next year.

It is looking likely that Jakucionis, Ivisic and Riley all are gone at end the season and all will play in NBA.

I was pretty confident in last year's team too once it started playing and I got a feel for how the pieces were going to fit. Maybe slightly behind the board's consensus then whereas now I'm slightly ahead.

And to be honest I think it's probably not super likely we reach the heights last year's team did, just due to the inconsistency of youth. We'll see, it's possible. No one is beating this team if they shoot like yesterday, but that won't be every game.

My point really is though that "these talented kids will jell" and "wait til the major pieces come back next year and develop through the program" are both optimistic "positive" sentiments. It's just that one has a strong basis in evidence over the course of the Underwood Era at Illinois, and the other has absolutely no basis in evidence over the course of the Underwood Era at Illinois.

I try not to be such a pain all the time, but I get a bee in my bonnet about the "freak out and panic and say terrible things about BU in every game thread, then disregard all logic or understanding of 2024 college sports to spin everything that happens as good omens for some future super-team in the other threads the rest of the week" current of posting around here. I just think it fundamentally misunderstands why we have had and are in a strong position to continue to have success under BU.

It's insisting that nothing is ever a problem versus having confidence that problems will get solved.
