The fixation on ousting assistant coaches whose tenure has aligned with the resurgence of the program and the best 4 year B1G run in the history of the program is a little silly.

And by far the most laughable takes are that Hamer's experience of 2 seasons as a scout and assistant coach in the NBA was primarily spent brewing coffee and washing jock straps.

I dont know enough about Hamer to have an opinion, myself. I've never sat down with the guy and talked hoops, obviously. But come on.

I’m sorry but I have such a hard time believing that none of: Orlando, Geoff, Chester, Tim, and Chin have virtually nothing to offer to the world of X’s and O’s…a mean not even worthy of the occasional SLOB or BLOB or special?

They’ve been around hoops their whole lives. They’ve had varied experiences and have been around other coaches that they can plagiarize. Even a broken clock is right twice a day. It seems like a strange dynamic to me.
BREAKING NEWS: Chester, Tim and Chin are no longer coaches at the University of Illinois and are not involved in game planning or in game adjustments.

Here is the resume for Underwood, Hamer, and Jones

Underwood - 2 season director of scouting and recruiting Illinois (this is not the resume of a Big Ten assistant)

Hamer - 1 year video coordinator Indiana Fever, 1 year coaching associate LA Lakers, 1 year advance scout for defense LA Lakers, 2 years video coordinator Illinois, 2 years assistant to the head coach Illinois. (this is not the resume of a Big Ten Assistant)

Jones - 2 years graduate manager Illinois, 1 year video coaching associate Sacramento Kings, 1 season director of operations Stephen F Austin, 1 season director of recruiting and scouting Illinois (this is not the resume of a Big Ten assistant)

None of these guys has the experience necessary to be a Big Ten assistant, and it's not like any of them are ace recruiters. I get Anderson left at a bad time, but what exactly is Underwood thinking here? Luke Yaklich is unemployed. He would seem a better choice.
How many teams go six-deep with regards to topnotch coaches? Just as you need some role players at the end of the bench, you need some role coaches too.

You seemed unaware of that in your post listing the assistant coaches
I probably worded it dumb. But I just meant that we have had a number of AC’s…and Brad seems to think NONE of them know much of anything about X’s and O’s…except Gentry and his son.

When Brad himself stated back in a 2019 Presser that “the X’s and O’s are really pretty easy”okay? But yet he supposedly doest’t trust hardly any of these coaches that he hired. It’s a strange dynamic IMO.

TBF, I have not seen a team’s effort, attitude, coaching strategy, and game result change that much in one game in a LONG while.
Agree. The difference between Thursday and Saturday’s play is confounding!! Maybe all teams go thru similar, but I’ve been watching Illini since mid-60s and seems like most years we go thru a “January slump” of some kind. This year’s its been more acute given original expectations. Is it team youth? Mid-season fatigue? Loss of focus? Hitting “the wall”? Coaching? Opponent adjustments? Who knows…it’s always something. This yr, it appears getting healthy and changing the offense has made the difference - the proof is coming in next few games. All part of the fun following our beloved.

Tim leaving late definitely gave us some inexperience on the staff. The two coaches who were allowed to be added this year are not allowed to recruit off campus. With the limited role, you probably have to adjust expectations of the resumes of guys who would take it. There are a LOT more AC positions out there than there used to be.

Luke Yaaklich was unemployed when Anderson left. There is no connection to Underwood that I'm aware of. But a local guy known to be a great mind defensively, with a strong resume. Seems like fate was playing into our hands, until it wasn't. He was definitely discussed at the time as a possibility.

Hopefully the one that is healthy.

So, do we intend to fill the AC position at season end? Anyone?

My sense is given the timing of Tim Anderson leaving close to the season starting, Brad just took the opportunity to promote Kwa Jones to reward him given he had the slot open. Given compensation was a significant reason in TA leaving it seems, and Whitman had to go to donors to find OA coming on board, we frankly might not have had the budget to hire a Yaaklich who's been a head coach. But at seasons end I'm sure Brad is going to look at the AC's and do some restructuring and get another experienced AC in here, he would be foolish not to. Yaaklich, Boynton, any others that free up with coaching movement in the offseason almost certainly would be upgrades in experience and recruiting than what we have now

Will Riley is almost the inverse Kofi in the sense that he's just scratching the surface of how much he can dominate at the **college level**, but **NBA** teams are salivating at his potential and I bet feel like they can teach him what he needs once he gets to the league.

This 4 game stretch in Jan/Feb might not be enough to get him in the lottery, but if he keeps balling out like this in March.........highly highly doubt he comes back.

Either way, he's making a ton of money next year whether it's here or not.

If he keeps up his recent productivity, he gone.
Scratch that, unless his production completely falls into the abyss, he gone.

Assuming infinitely generous donors, what would it take to get both Will and KJ to return next year?
