Illinois 98, Florida Atlantic 89 Postgame

Much more enjoyable for me when we don’t shoot too many threes. Attack the rim, shoot some mid range, and let the right guys shoot the three.

What a difference exactly 52 weeks makes. After the Jimmy V Texas victory last year I was giddy b/c of the UCLA and TX comebacks but couldn't tell if it was real or sustainable. 3-1/2 days later v. PSU we discovered it wasn't.

Now, after watching the boys at the RAC on Saturday and again tonight it's completely different feeling: a quiet, smoldering, satisfaction. These coals are bright orange and I sense they'll burn for a long while. Three months of the regular season stretch before us, a shimmering Autobahn of tantalizing promise.

On to Knoxville. :illinois: 🏀

16-13 FAU at the 10 minute mark of the game. 85-73 Illini the last 30 minutes. Love the offensive flow after getting Vlad Goldin in foul trouble. Such an enjoyable team to watch.

63% shooting, 40% threes and 90% free throws. Very efficient offensive night! Win in Knoxville and this team will crack top 10.
Too lazy to check--when was the last time that we shot >63%?

I think that's the key: he may have been questioning whether he could be one of the prime scorers on a team at this higher level. He was told he could be. With the Rutgers game he realized that he could be. And with that confidence, a monster has been unleashed.
I believe when Domask came here he was willing to do whatever they needed him to do to be part of this team. He probably figured TSJ and COHAWK would be the primary scorers with a good helping of Dain on the side. I imagine he didn't want to step on anyone's toes by trying to do too much. As it turns out with Hawkins struggling on offense we need him to be more aggressive and assert himself getting more shots and he has. Now the whole team knows what he is capable of while still playing within himself. He also took care of the bulk of the ball handling tonight. It now looks like we have that one two punch we needed with plenty of others able to contribute when needed.

Let's see now:

(1) Yeah, we played OK. For the most part. Kinda.
(2) Yeah, we shot FT OK. 90% from the line.
(3) Yeah, we shot the ball... fairly well. 63% from 2. 40% from 3. So, yeah, good enough, I guess.

For my part I felt Brad's hair was under control; I noted that it seemed unusually plastered to the sides of his head at the outset of the game. It wasn't distracting but certainly noticeable.

I didn't focus on Geoff's hemline. Am always distracted looking at his kicks, 'cause he rocks an assortment sockless. No complaints there.

CoHawk drained a pick and pop trey that was pretty sweet and timely late. Otherwise, he's terrible. He's out of control and an unmitigated liability to the program. But he seems like a nice young man and I'm sure will do well in life. Oh, I mean he posted up Vlad fairly well, I guess. Dude fouled out.

TSJ had one drive where he got a bit out of control. One. The rest were fairly OK.

Aside from all that, I guess another complaint is that from a distance and on TV I sometime confuse Luke and Marcus if I can't see their numbers. On Saturday at the RAC I had no problem so it must be a TV thing for me.

Oh, and Marcus played fairly well this evening. Yeah. He was pretty good tonight.

I can't really think of anything else. Hope that helps and that you enjoyed the concert. I have fond memories of my high school Christmas concerts. ;)
Thanks for playing along. Geoff socks are always on point. Come on daddy Brad, can't Tyler help get your head correct before public airings!

I agree! I’m more impressed by Harmon every game. He’s a really good pickup!
I second this on Harmon - love his game! Goode always in the right spot too! Dain got benched after he dribbled too much, but he was on his feet late in the game excited for his guys. Rodgers knows he won't be in on the offensive end at the end of games and he came in and played awesome defense and was excited. Hansberry gave us a few good minutes. Hawkins does dumb things, but does really good things too that not many can do. I'm telling you Hawkins is the key to a Final Four run. If he's 100% in and smart, we are one of the best 5-6 teams in the country. The point is last year we didn't have a "team". This year we have a TEAM!!!! So much fun to watch - not just this game or Rutgers, but the way we play!!!

Jimmy V classic always reminds me there’s a whole hell of a lot more important things than basketball. And when I’m upset (or happy) about Illinois basketball people there’s people fighting freaking cancer. That speech gets me every time.

Just an incredible win. Awesome to see a 98 spot! Though if we were really good we’d at least have gotten to 100!! 😉

I agree with everything..Golden would’ve got more without Hawkins. That tap out to Shannon was high IQ. He knocked down a big shot late so I’m hoping he gets his shot back

Domask was somehow the only one (other than maybe TSJ) who understood his size was an advantage, and backed FAU's smaller guards down. Even excluding all of his 3 pointers, he really had more of an inside game than Hawkins, Guerrier, or anyone else.
