What a great team win! So fun to watch this team play like a bunch of crazed dogs on the defensive end. To not let a team like FAU score a bucket in transition is almost unfathomable. And what a coming out party for Domask! While I love his poise bringing it up and his ability to read the situation and back down smaller defenders. But I was most excited about his will to drive on the big guy and hit pull-up mid range jumpers. We haven't had that skill set in a long time! It's gonna be a really fun year!!! :shield:

If there is a better player in the country than TSJ this year, I haven’t seen him yet. He should be in any POY conversation moving forward. Edey is massive, but Terrence is a basketball player.

FAU was definitely not at their ceiling. Goldin played only ~20 min (and still killed it during those minutes) and they were missing one of their main guards (Nick Boyd, averages 10ppg). They're a damn good team and will only be better come March. That said, doesn't take anything away from that W. They played really well, but our guys just played better.
As it relates to Goldin.

These things don't happen in a vacuum. Goldin was in foul trouble because the Illini players were fast and made him foul. He would likely get in foul trouble against the Illini.

Know what I liked best about today's game? Illinois found a mis-match and went at again and again...and again! They never stopped running Damask into the paint and letting him bully smaller guys-- over and OVER... It was like watching the NBA where the hot hand or mis-match is worked at until it is stopped.

I've never seen any Illini team (in my 65 years of following them) have this mentality. It's so demoralizing when a person is so unstoppable time after time after time.... and there's nothing you can do. I'm LOVIN it!!!

Wait! Like Chase Brown in FB last year??? hmmmm

Didn't get to watch, sat at a choir concert instead! I assume by all the comments we played ok, shot FT ok, and shot the ball well.

I'm looking for the complaints and didn't see any, can someone highlight a negative, please. I won't be able to sleep tonight until someone says something negative.

- Brad's hair miscombed
- Geoff pant legs too high
- CoHawk surely did something negative after 20 positives
- TSJ had mismatching loop length on his shoestring?

Anything?
CoHawk was terrible from 3 . . . until he wasn’t.

Yes, that shot with 2:48 left in the game was the best-looking 3 that CH made this entire season (he has just 2 made 3s to choose from this season, you know), but let's talk about how it compares to the rest of his 3pt attempts.

He was SUPER wide open for that particular shot (where he normally is only partially open). I'm not saying it is bad to shoot a partially open 3, but, come on, when you are shooting 2 for 14 (14%) from 3, then you only should be shooting the SUPER wide-open 3s like that. Note that CH was 1-5 from 3 tonight and shot 28% from 3 last season. Sorry, none of these numbers are good. They all are clearly less than 1 in 3 (33.3% or 1 point per shot), which is roughly the minimum shooting percentage anybody should take 3s at, if we have other good options on offense, say other 2pt shooter who average about 50% or more (we have about 4 or more of these) or other 3pt shooters at 33.3% or above (we have 3 of these).

So, yes, excellent shot by CH here. But, no, he shouldn't be shooting all these other 3s where he is only partially open. He must eliminate most of those.

Oh, and let's talk about his feet on these 3s. Someone here made the point a few games ago that CH's feet are too far back (it looks like 3-4 feet behind the line to be precise) when he shoots most 3s. Initially, I said that was okay and not to worry about his feet too much. But I've changed my mind. His feet are often so far back that it significantly makes the shot more distant. Not 20' 9", but roughly a 25'-foot shot! This other poster was right, and I was wrong before. That is just too much. If you look at CH's 3pt shot at 2:48 left everything is so much better on that shot. His toes are just inches behind the line. He had SO MUCH time. He looks great. Almost like a FT, but longer and a little flatter. Yeah, it's Coleman. I have NO problem with this type of 3-pt shot! And I won't even complain if it doesn't go in. Can he please only shoot these types of 3pt attempts going forward? His percentage would go up to about 35% for the first time in his life, and he could play (rather than sit) in the NBA, and the Illini would be incredible if he did!

FAU more than looked the part to me. I don't care at all about their loss to Bryant. Those types of games where the ball just doesn't go in happens even to the best of them. Those kids don't quit and are well coached. I could see them making another deep run in the tourney.
After we first played Marquette I thought to myself, this has to be the best team we play all year, besides maybe Purdue. To me FAU is even better. Thank the Lord we implementing an offense. 😀

I thought KenPom this early in the season is still very weighted toward last year?
It’s still weighted towards last season, yes, so it’s not perfect. I personally still like it better than the AP poll this early because it’s less reactive to wins & losses.

Tennessee has 3 losses, so the AP poll has dropped them from 7 a few weeks ago to 17 today. All 3 of those losses, however, were against top 10 teams (the current 2, 4, and 9 ranked teams) and all 3 games were extremely close.

Take us, for example, had we beat Marquette by 1, an 8 point swing, we’d likely be a top 10, maybe even top 5 team right now in the AP poll. But we lost by 7, so we’re currently 20 in the AP. In KenPom, those 8 extra points likely would have made very little difference at all.

No poll, human or computer, is perfect this time of year (or ever, really, that’s what makes the games so exciting). Overall, I still trust the computers more than the humans.

Agreed. As I said before the game, FAU fouls and Goldin is no exception. The question was whether we were going to be aggressive and take it to them, forcing them to foul. Harmon picked up that huge 2nd foul on Goldin. I'll be real, I had no idea what Justin was doing at first on that play as he had a clear lane to the basket for the throwdown, but he went straight into the out of position Goldin forcing contact. Really smart play. And then that 4th foul that CoHawk got him to commit through a strong boxout, just huge plays. We played really smart tuned in basketball tonight, and if we do that most nights, teams are going to be forced to make the decision of either allowing TSJ to blow by them or foul. We put on a masterclass of pressure offense tonight. It was beautiful.

Coleman has the talent to be a close #3 to those 2 as well when he puts it all together.
I think he's getting close.
Nope. Just simply thinks too much and doesn't play in the flow. Outstanding defender and big piece on defensive end though, so he fills a role.

Great to see him hit a 3 tonight and clutch free throws. But he has to stay in his lane.

Some of these takes are laughable.

“FAU was definitely not at their ceiling. Goldin played only ~20 min (and still killed it during those minutes)”. - It’s called foul trouble. Why was Goldin in foul trouble? Going after Goldin aggressively. Give credit to the Illini defense on the big guy.

“Need more looks for Goode”. - Huh? You give the ball to your hot hands until proven otherwise. Domask and TSJ were unstoppable.
There will be a game(s) where Goode will take over.

So impressed with CoHawks honesty and humbleness in post game. That's huge. Really inspired that we have a vocal leader in TSjr.! We have a ton of studs and parts that need to move together. If they do and do it with selflessness. We can be a very special team this year. We love them and support their efforts.
