Rules enforcement back then looked to me like it was mostly for show or penalizing non-favored programs. And Illinois back then was on eggshells. Seemed like they either didn't have someone at the NCAA to watch their backs, or didn't understand how other programs were skirting rules and getting away with it.
I love this quote from Warren Buffet's partner Charlie Munger, "Show me the incentive and I'll show you the outcome." His point being that people are people, and with rare exceptions, they'll eventually do what's in their own interest even in a bad system.
The NCAA and college football incentivized willful ignorance and paying players under the table, among other things. And the leaders absolutely knew it and adjusted. How many coaches suddenly didn't know what was going on in their programs when news finally broke? Coaches that preached responsibility to their players and the public, now saying they couldn't know about recruitments or awful things their assistants were doing. Only after decades of endless scandals did the rules change to say coaches are responsible for what's going on in their programs.
My hope is that the Buckeyes come into the game overconfident and make enough unforced or sloppy errors that Illinois has a chance. Of course, Illinois will have to play flawless ball for 60 minutes with no turnovers and few penalties. I'll be recording the game on Saturday...just in case history is made!

Very weird feelings when playing games like this. You go in knowing you are going to most likely lose, takes some fan pressure off.

#BPOTRDream last night, It was 1980 and Dave Wilson went crazy in Columbus OH. We lost 49-42. Watch at 16:31 Wilson hits Mike Martin deep, he has a clear path on the OSU 20 yard line but gets stripped by OSU defender. I knew we had something with Mike White. Never should have fired him.

They will not be overconfident. I believe they are going to try to run the ball down our throat. They have had some concerns there. There coaches have respect for Brett and this is league play. That is what I have gathered in their press conference this week which I watched. He wants to win the conference. They have not won it in 4-5 years or so. For them, that is an eternity.
Would rather win but I will take this if need be. Any wider spread and we are who they thought we are.

I hope we see progress. This game for OSU is probably more about them than us. Their running game, short yardage, and 3rd down efficiency hasn't been to their standard. I’d say they have a different goal than us this year and they will probably continue to sharpen where they have been soft. Hopefully we can create stress into the 4th and change their equation.
