I just read this morning that we found Ethan Brown on a New Balance shoe circuit. There's a joke there about "old man game" or something.

Just turned 47 a couple months ago and got my first pair. ;)
NB is a lot more than that :)

I’m interested to see how our offense works against a high major team that is theoretically more athletic than us from a conference that’s generally more athletic and faster paced than the big ten.

Our pace is insane but in theory an athletic team can at least run with us. Their depth will be tested though and if they’re not deep enough that will wear them out.

My favorite part about this half court offense is that we’re basically running the better basketball read and react offense that is like the first offense you teach to little kids learning basketball (seriously, YouTube it lol).

Pass and cut
Dribble at backdoor
Drive and circle move
With a modern addition of pass and chase to a big

As someone who installed this for middle school feeders in the past I get great joy and a little chuckle watching it work at such a high level.

Good point. Also, The offense is predicated on either beating the other team down the court in transition or in half court being able to draw a help defender without using a screen in order for the cutting and passing to work.

So that means Andrej, Coleman and to a lesser extent Vaaks are the primary guys who can get past their man enough to draw help and make the right pass to get an open shot. IMO that is why Andrej’s passing is so critical against the elite teams he’s one of our key players to create an open shot

Duke and Uconn probably feel they can matchup with us 1-1 and just not help when someone tries to drive so it will be interesting what we go to when that happens. Tomi getting a three off in that scenario is likely the one shot we’ll always have given there aren’t other bigs that will guard him that far out

Don't leave Brown out of the guys who can beat their man off the dribble. Him putting a Penn defender on the floor and almost making TJ Power hyperextend his knee on a hesi shows hes got the moves.

I feel like if this squad shows up and plays defense every night, they'll still score 80 on a bad night on offense. They're just going to wear teams out that are only 6 or 7 deep and any kind of foul trouble.
agreed, UCLA probably the only team that can run as deep

The name of this game is going to be "tempo". Illinois is 40th in the country in tempo. TT is 309th or something crazy. We need to force them to get up to our speed and wear them out. On defense, we need to be in the passing lanes and forcing turnovers. We need to double team when possible. TT only has one reliable 3-point shooter up to this point in the season, and they as a team shoot terribly from beyond the arc. So we can afford to concern ourselves less with attacking exterior passing lanes and try to deny the entry pass or the driver. Make them beat you from outside. Especially Atwell, who has made only three of eighteen attempts.

This is the big question for me as well. Will our freshman be able to hold up on D enough for us to keep up the pace that tires them out? If it starts to look like the first half of Baylor do we shorten the bench and adjust our pace of play or do we let it ride and try to wear them out? I'm sure we are going to get some punches to the face so very interested how we respond to adversity and what adjustments we make.
