The two great traumas in the modern history of the program were 2002 and 2008 where our two sudden bursts of success and optimism and fan interest were totally and utterly incinerated into irredeemable rubble within 11 months in both cases.

If we scheduled like a team that was building something, both of those are bowl seasons. Steps backward in each case, sure, but also a solidification of what came before. In both cases we'd have been 3-0 and ranked in late September. The butterfly effect from those scheduling decisions is staggering.

Now, Illinois football's current state seems to indicate that the Fighting Illini won't be competing for a spot in the College Football Playoff any time soon. And in that same vein, wins are more important at this juncture than perception in the eyes of the selection committee.

The University of Illinois announced Wednesday the addition of eight future home football games. The Fighting Illini will face each opponent once and all eight games are schduled for Memorial Stadium.

While none of these games are going to draw 60,000 fans , we have games we can win . Until we start going 7-5 or 8-4 with these types of schedules given our 9 game B1G docket, we need home games we can win . Once we go 9-3 or so, then we can talk about tougher opponents .

Once we have a coaching administration that isn't one bad year away from losing all credibility, lets talk about tougher opponents.

Not really as interesting as it is sobering. I'm sure many of us are disappointed in the scheduling, but we honestly don't have much of a choice. This football program (read: Athletic Program) has struggled to be anywhere near relevant recently and when we do get a surge of momentum, we're back at the bottom of the B1G the following year.

This program has a looonnng way to go before we're scheduling high caliber opponents.

We play 9 Big Ten games every year. We'll have plenty of chances to upset Michigan and Ohio State in the coming years.

2016 - At Michigan

2017 - At Ohio State

2018 - Neither

2019 - Michigan (home)

Hypocritical garbage from NW shill Teddy Greenstein. Love how he fails to mention some of the murderer's row of NW football opponents over the last few years. EIU, Ball State, WIU, Western Mich, and of course football powerhouse Maine

We need to win to build the program. We've been shooting ourselves in the foot with scheduling for the last decade while most of the Power 5 feasts on cupcakes.

Would like to see Mizzou back on schedule...preferably home and home with maybe a neutral mixed in.

Also hope Whitman revisits Soldier Field Northwestern games.. see if we can get out of those

Yes because playing in front of an empty Memorial Stadium over Thanksgiving weekend when the students have left campus and the dorms are closed makes so much more sense

Fun Fact: Lovie Smith will coach Illinois in both of his former NFL head coaching venues next season. Against South Florida at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa and against Northwestern at Soldier Field.

Thinking about future schedules , where are some home and homes where we would have a punchers chance and it would be a nice trip ?

Here are my thoughts:

1) SMU - can't go wrong with Dallas
2) Air Force Academy- Colorado Springs is beautiful and would love to get a service academy on the schedule
3) Wake Forest - it's North Carolina and at this time the weakest ACC team in the state
4) Kentucky or Vanderbilt - not sure why we have not played these two teams . Regionally makes sense but I've never seen a game. Nashville would be a real fun weekend trip.

I prefer Dallas over FW any day. But I too agree with the steak joints. I went up a few years ago when the Bears played the cowboys on Monday night. Went to a place where the lunch special was a 12oz ribeye, loaded baked potato, salad and drink for 8.99. This place was not a dump and the food was delicious. Really wish I could remember what that place was called.

Wouldn't mind a West Coast swing, potentially with Washington State, Oregon State, or Cal. Also think the timing might be right to look at playing Mississippi State in the near future.
