Nah. The SEC has a handful of quality schools in it. Vanderbilt, Texas A&M, and Florida (and Georgia in some fields) come to mind. Those would mostly for in with the B1G academically. The average academic level of the SEC is far, far below the B1G, though.

As someone who teaches at an SEC school (and not one of the good ones that you mentioned) I can tell you that the academic level is WAY below UI. It's not even close. Every semester I am shocked at how poorly prepared the students are to complete basic assignments.

Louis Dorsey's twitter seems pretty pro-Illini lately, though he did make a post that seems to be fishing for bigger offers before saying Illinois is still at the top of his list

If we land Dorsey, this is offense could be scary good in a year or two. Him mixed with all of our WR talent and QB. Look out

Whelp, he just went right to the top of my wish list. That guy runs away from people and is consistently the fastest on the field in FLORIDA. In terms of what he did for his high school team, he is a swiss army knife. He seems to be a threat in the Percy Harvin archetype on offense (Slot WR, RB, Flanker) and then on defense he reminds me of what VeAngelo Bentley did for us, but he's a heck of a lot faster and quicker. Oh, and he returns kicks and punts a la Bentley.

They list him as an ATH, but honestly with this kid you would be spoiled for choice. You can play him as a slot WR who you occasionally hand the ball off to on jet sweeps, you can play him as a corner, you can bulk him up a bit and have him be a RB, and no matter where you put him he will be returning punts/kicks for you. Must watch highlights if we are actually a contender.

Before expansion the SEC academically was basically Vandy and UF, and a big gulf to the next school, maybe Georgia, Auburn or Tennessee. TAM and Mizzou fit into that gulf. Bama is really trying to convert athletic success to academic. There were two national merit semifinalists in my daughters high school class that received full rides to Bama, and nothing from our local BIG schools.

Personally, my question right now is how different is Louis Dorsey from Zarrian Holcombe? Reminder that Z is also 6'6 220 (per fightingillini.com), and also had a really nice offer list while playing in TX. Does Dorsey have more potential to pack on some weight and play TE? I can't seem to find Holcombe's 40 time to compare that with Dorsey. The best I have for 40s is on their hudl (so, unverified), but Dorsey lists his as 4.58 and Z has his at 4.63.

Z if i remember was in the high 4.6 range. But okay we have one 6'6 220 TE/WR in Z.

I personally would be completely okay with another 6'6 220 TE/WR on the roster. Haha

Wow, apparently things aren't that great between Mizzou and ESL. Frank Cusamano a reporter in STL talked to Darren Sunkett, the head coach of ESL. Frank asked if Thomas will be at Mizzou and Sunkett said no. Louisville,Miami and Illinois are his top 3. He did say Estes is still committed at mizzou at this point. The thing that blew me away is when he said Barry Odom hasn't been in ESL yet since he has been the head coach at Mizzou. Sounds like some problems between the two already because of this. Sunkett said for them to mend fences, he has to show up first. How can the Mizzou coach not even visit ESL when they have gotten some great players from there recently? Way to screw that up Barry, and it's a perfect time for Lovie to take over now in that area.

My question was more because of all of the early impact chatter I've heard surrounding Dorsey, when in reality we have a Dorsey clone already in the roster who didn't really see the field on offense. Just interested in the differences, I am all for it provided we have a role carved out for them in a few years (ideally, one that doesn't require them knowing how to block, just to be sure)

Was there talk of him having an early impact? I always thought of him as a project, similar to Holcombe. Holcombe was our #1 recruit for the Class of 2016 and this staff didn't seem to care all that much about RS'ing any of the incoming Freshmen this past year. We were desperate for anyone to step up at WR which is why Holcombe got some playing time but he really should have red shirted.

It will be interesting to see how the staff handles RS'ing "their" players.

After the early weeks of camp, Zarrian was moved from TE to WR. There is a learning curve, mentally & physically, that he had to get over. Under most circumstances I assume a player would redshirt in that scenario, but with with the lack of talent & depth at the WR position I imagine it wasn't feasible for him to redshirt. Though, if he has the right attitude, along with his talent, he will be a very productive player in his remaining years at Illinois
