Seems to be a very good recruit. Welcome to the Orange and Blue, Daniel. :illinois:

I feel they need to caution people here to calm down on Barker. I went back and watched his tape as I was way less than excited about this commit. It was a short sophomore tape, and to my mild surprise I saw a few things I liked better the second time around. Giving a mild at best bump to mid 3 star.
He moved smoothly, with better feet, and nice length to go ht the 6'4 height which was unnoticed by me I think (it has been many months since the first).
I am fine with the committed based on the it was sophomore tape and the previously mentioned.
I like Henle substantially more mind. But a nice get comparisons to a healthy Davis way to early.

Oh and the get comes from the fact that both Kentucky and Pittsburgh just added a second quality tight end. So not sure how much the staff swayed him as we were the last power 5 school still standing with an offer.

I think that lowers any chance of us getting Luke Ford, which was about 1-1000 chance, Ford has been playing fans for awhile now on twitter been super annoying.

Not at all. Do you really think he is afraid of a player with only 3 power five offers? He is considering Georgia who landed a 5 star TE last year that made the Freshman All American team. Alabama has multiple four star TE already on the the roster.

Agreed, won't impact Ford's decision

By the way if we land Verdis Brown he would on the o-line for me to start with liked his tape more there/

I thought the same thing on Brown, but if the staff really thinks he is better on the DL got to trust they know more then I do about skill

I don't follow football recruiting carefully, it is too massive for me to keep up with.
How are we doing in the current year effort?
I have the impression that not long ago we had a thin, not great class.
Is that still the case?
Are we making up ground or falling further behind?
If someone would provide an elevator summary of the current year (the type of story you can tell during an elevator ride), I would appreciate it.
TIA

Swag not a single micron. By the way looking at the 2018 roster for now the only 2 names I would definitely expect list for the position are Palmer and Dorsey along with Barker if he signs. Trainer maybe at ot Jones, Reams and and Mcgrew all more than decent shots to transfer. Now all that to happen not likely but certainly a possibility.

If your measuring the team by recruits then yeah we are not doing to great. As of late we had an uptick in recruits bringing in i believe 7 recruits in a months span which is amazing but most of there rating aren't so great but Lovie has focus more on recruiting for the trenches and you dont need 4 or 5 stars kids you need good coaching. Also i believe we are light on scholarships this year so it wont be a great recruiting class but we are good. the one name you need to know as far as recruiting though is luke ford, we could really us the kid

Surprisingly better than given credit for. Only 2 names pop out on the list Taylor and Myers as big gets. But only 2 pop out as poor gets Pearl and Sandy to me. The other 5 all very reasonably good candidates to help the squad. I know that most like Pearl and Sandy and both could turn out to be better prospects than I have now. Pearl at say 275 and a year more of work on the line could get a real good bump.
For the moment imo we are averaging mid 3* for the 9 guys Probably only slightly lower than last year. A few like Ford, Dunkle, Brown , Lockett and Craddieth would change that in a heart beat. By the way there are probably another dozen names that would fit on that list for the big gets.

You dont like Sandy? I really liked his tape. Not saying that he should be 4 star or something but by no means did I see a "poor get". He is fast and does a great job going up and making catches for a guy his size. But Im no expert.

I pretty much stand alone on Sandy. But he literally had the lowest rating of anybody I had featured at the slot. There are presently 5 guys that we might and I stress might have a shot at landing that I like more.
By a ton T Collins, then by a lot I Stewart and S Oshadi, followed by C Ford and finally some D Sneed.
For me a very similar situation to Pearl at tackle, the lone difference is with good weight gain and year of experience I see more upside for Pearl.

I agree that Pearl is obviously a project. I think the staff knows that, you just cant teach a big, long 6'7 body. But they can teach him football.

I dont know much about some of those other guys. I know I'shawn Stewart is basically not even being recruited for at wr right now. By anyone.

I'm still shocked his stats, game tape, and measurables have not bumped up his rating. Best of luck next season!

That being said, where is the excitement for playing at Illinois? His twitter is almost completely devoid of Illini posts/mentions. I also don't see him reaching out to potential recruits a la Megginson, Boyd, Smalling, etc.. Guess I just expected more.

I honestly don't get the lack of interest from other schools or the relatively low rating for Coran either, although I'm extremely biased towards Peoria players. EdgyTim wrote this about Coran after seeing him at a showcase:

https://edgytim.forums.rivals.com/threads/recap-and-review-under-armour-camp-chicago.12489/

QB Coran Taylor Peoria- Illinois commit and this was the second camp I've seen him in live this off season. Taylor has all the tools yet I also feel his game is pretty much restricted in these type of settings. Taylor is so much more than just a pocket passer and events like this one really doesn't show his overall value. Taylor was fine here yet I also trust what I've seen live under the lights from Taylor much more than any camp setting this off season.

He then wrote this after seeing him at a different showcase:

https://edgytim.forums.rivals.com/threads/recap-rivals-camp-at-ofallon.12560/

QB Coran Taylor Peoria- this camp performance was easily the best I've seen this off-season from the Illinois commit. I just get the feeling that Taylor remains a turn on the lights and he's ready to go kinda player, yet Taylor showed me a lot here. Taylor seems to be more and more comfortable as more of a pocket passer at these camps and he's also improved his overall accuracy and touch as well. Taylor's best part of his game I feel remains the run threat...yet the passing game portion is improving all the time as well.

He got a nice bump from Rivals as they gave him a 5.7 rating and rank him as being the 16th best player in the state. 247 ranks him as the 43rd best player in the state and that is based purely on his showing at his first showcase this Spring. These services, and other schools, aren't going to take the time to go to the games and watch him play so they probably aren't liking what they see at these showcases.

I don't think his Senior season is going to change his ranking. If they don't like his Junior film then there's nothing he can do in his Senior season to change their minds. He actually threw the ball more as a Sophomore (threw for 2,500+ yards) because he had better receivers that year. Last year, and this coming year, they have two quality backs in addition to him running the ball so there is no need to air it out.

His lack of enthusiasm about coming to Illinois on Twitter is concerning although this is where Kendrick Green being at Illinois and the lack of interest from other schools helps us. If you look back at his Twitter account around when he committed, he was more enthusiastic about coming to Illinois and tweeted at Ayodele Adeoye and other recruits who were getting offers and tried to convince them to come to Illinois. I think he got frustrated with the recruiting process (both his and Illinois') and has moved on and is just focusing on playing football.

Heck of an article about quarterback target.. decision appears to be on the horizon!

Why does the article say that we only have seven verbal commits? Is that an honest mistake or does he know something that we don't?

I'd imagine West Virginia is the team to beat here. They currently do not have a verbal commitment from a QB for the Class of 2018. He also visited West Virginia in June and hasn't visited us since March.

ESPN has Lowe as a Top 300/4 Star recruit which helps his 247 composite score. This would be a nice get and I don't know what our back up plan is if we don't get him (Littlejohn?) as we obviously need 2 QBs for this class.

If we get Lowe that's great, but with Coran on board, Cam a here, and Lawson someplace, I think we have bigger needs than QB.

I wouldn't count on Lawson ever getting here.

Given the number of scholarships that were offered to QBs after Coran committed (Hill, Bowman, Mitchell, Foster, Mordecai), it's safe to say that the staff wants another QB. A lot of these guys have committed elsewhere and they've focused in on Lowe.

This seems to be the consensus. Robert was on one of the sports shows yesterday? and doesn't expect him to ever make it.
