ties will be resolved
There's a Navajo (I believe) saying that you should always behave in a way that would make your family at home proud. It's great for Verdis to have that attitude.

So much for the sting of losing Luke Ford. Would have been nice had he stayed at home. We could use more downstate representation. Regrets will be his.

Welcome to the Illini Nation, Verdis. You made the right choice. I-L-L-

:illinois:

Can't lose what we never had. Wholeheartedly concur w/your other points. The Illini message will be much better received when we start turning the corner. If not next year, the following year. As to Illinois kids, yes, would be nice. But I'll gladly settle for winning. Then (and only then?) we'll see things turn w/elite IL prospects.

Verdis says he decided @IlliniFootball over Missouri early this morning.

“I asked God to give me a sign and this one song kept playing over and over again in my head. Diddy’s song, ‘Coming Home’ so I figured that must be my sign.”

Dodged a bullet there. Thanks, Diddy!

Also, according to Beherns, Brown said he'd rather play defense but he's open to whatever the team needs. I like this kid a lot. Anyone have scouting on if he's a better prospect on DL or OL?

With Brown we now have 4 Top 1000 OL recruits plus Pearl, a guy with a high ceiling according to the recruiting analysts. I wouldn't be surprised to see at least one of these guys on the DL eventually - maybe Brown.

That's got to be one of our all-time best OL classes.

I remember hearing think it was Werner show awhile back that many schools were recruiting for offense but we were recruiting him for defense. That could've changed but I do remember hearing that somewhere.

At the same time please don't "hate on" Luke Ford. Possible NFL talent and needs to go where there is a pro type talent QB. We don't offer that, and he needs to supporting himself in the future. Only wish the best for Luke in the future. It appears he tipped his hat to Illinois and Lovie, classy move.

No "hating." I just think he's missing out on something. He has a lot bigger chance of being "seen" on Illinois, and certainly he's not going to get any less development. Yes, I appreciate the hat tip. But I think he's going to miss out by not playing as an Illini. That's not "hating." That's just, dang, kid, you made the wrong choice. (Of course, the "right choice" would have helped us too, but we'' be right even as it.)

One way to look at the relative quality of this class is simply to compare the number of Top 1000 recruits with our "recruiting peers." We're near the bottom.

Top 1000 recruits:

Wisconsin 17
Iowa 15
Minnesota 15
Nebraska 11
Minnesota 9
Indiana 9
Northwestern 8
Illinois 8
Rutgers 7
Purdue 6

I know some people will say "yeah but this staff SCOUTS." Yeah, they do. But even with great scouting we're still operating at a talent deficit against the top of the division.

What concerns me most, however, is that I think we might also have a coaching deficit. We certainly haven't out-coached anybody yet.

I've been waiting until we have this class to assess the future. This is what I see considering the schedule for each year:

- 2018: No bowl. Over/under is 4 wins. QB and scoring points will still be a huge issue, but D will be improved so games will be closer.

- 2019: Squeak into a bowl. 7 wins at most; 6 more likely.

- 2020: 7-8 wins. Decent bowl.

The caveat here is that recruiting could fall apart next year if the games aren't closer and we're still making stupid mistakes. If that happens then all bets are off for 2019-20.

If you're assuming something better you might want to take a closer look at the talent being assembled in the West and our future schedules.

Edit: I should also add that I would consider this a successful rebuild - slower than I'd like, but successful. Forgive me for my low expectations.

Baby steps :)

Finishing with:
QB Taylor or Irons,
Robertson or Coleman (or both),
WR Knowles or Gaskin (or both),

would make this a very solid class. I am sure we'll get one of the QBs, and I think odds are good we'll land at least one of the WRs. I have big doubts about Robertson and Coleman, so hopefully Lovie has some other LB prospects on the radar. Would also be nice to add some DL. :thumb:

Glad to hear that Lovie is putting Brown on the DL.

Adding Avery and Brown to the interior is really going to help.

*IF* Lovie can finish this class with a couple upper 3*/low 4* talents (Robertson, Taylor, Coleman, Knowles, Gaskin all fit that bill), I think this class will finish ahead of Purdue and the Evanston nerds for the second year in a row. While Minny has a nice class this year, last year's was not, so we could be roughly even with them over the two-year stretch. Wisconsin, Nebby and Iowa ahead of us, but not by insurmountable stretches, IMHO. Again, this all depends on finishing strong with three of four of the guys I mentioned in the first sentence, or equivalent talents.

Looking at this a slightly different way, if you look at every kid in the last two Illini classes, I think that the Illini have built some nice depth of BIG West caliber talent at every position, except for QB and LB:

OL Kramer, Boyd, Palczewski, Lowe, Unije, Meyers, Daniels, Slaughter, Pearl
RB Epstein, Bonner
WR Smalling, C. Green, Meadors
TE Dorsey
DL Avery, Roundtree, Gay, Oladipo, Carney, K. Green, V. Brown?
LB Phillips, Tolson
DB Williams, Hobbs, Adams, Brown, Martin, Ware

And it sounded like Pearl is a defensive end not oline.

This is great news. Adds immediate depth at SDE. It would also explain the lack of urgency to get another SDE.

Probably still need a WDE to add depth behind Gay and Carney.

Lovie Smith: Our recruiting department led by James Kirkland, Pat Embleton, Nate McNeal and Cam Skelding did a great job

Lovie: Always about starting in state. Florida has been good to us in past and was this year. We wanted to make ground in Texas this year

Lovie: A lot is said about stars. We have our own system.

Lovie: This year, we were able to get two players playing in the All-America Game (Verdis Brown and Calvin Avery)

Lovie: Always starts up front We wanted to add some bulk.

Lovie: Recruiting battles go up until the last minute. That definitely happened with Verdis Brown.

Lovie: Been recruiting Verdis for more than a year. Whatever side of the ball he chooses, we'll play him.

Lovie: Calvin Avery is another good football player. Can make a case that he'll play right away.

Lovie: Jordyn Slaughter and Julian Pearl. Slaughter will play on line. Pearl brings some flexibility to group, whether it's DE, TE and if he keeps growing, maybe OL.

Lovie: Verdis Brown meant an awful lot. Once you get a chance to know Verdis, it's more than a football player we're getting.

Lovie: We were all waiting like you were to announce it. Found out a few minutes before. Exciting times. Pumped up about it.

Lovie: It all starts up front.

Lovie: Early signing period helps us. I'm in favor of it.

Lovie: I didn't know this many players would sign early. First time through don't know how it will play out.

5-6 schollies available

Lovie: We still have some other spots available. We're starting over another cycle. We still feel like we could add more players.

Asked #illini Lovie Smith if he could have a commitment and they could sign in February: "Yes it is"
(Coran Taylor)

Lovie: First order of business is to exhale a bit. Staff takes some time off. Football coaches convention in January and then more recruiting.

Lovie: We recruited St. Louis hard. Sometimes it just doesn't work out. We missed out on a couple guys. Eventually, we'll get some more.

Lovie: MJ Rivers is an outstanding QB. Good size. Strong arm. Athlete. Leader. Great leader in the locker room. The profile we want in the QB position.

Lovie: Great football in Texas. It took us making a commitment that we were going to get in the area. Coach Stoker did a great job down there. We have a lot of ties, a lot of connections.

Lovie: You have to make your own evaluation. You can't go off of someone else's evaluation. We should know exactly what we're looking for.

Lovie: Everybody that we sign, we felt could be a star.

Lovie: I wanted us to have 5 available scholarships for February period, including transfers.

Lovie: Verdis Brown will start out on defensive side of the football.

Lovie: Can't ever have enough CBs especially with spread offenses. Nick Walker gives us a St. Louis kid. Good matchup. Excellent speed, quickness.

Lovie: Could use a DE, LBs, can't ever have too many CBs. QB maybe.

Lovie: Transfer numbers "pretty normal. When you're new to a program, guys will leave and move on." After 2 years, they know whether they're a fit or not. If not, we wish them good luck.

Lovie: A general rule, if you have an athlete like Brown, first place you look to play him is on defense. (Lovie likes defense)

Lovie: We would like to have options on transfer market. Not anticipating any right now. We want to be able add good players to our roster and have a spot for that as often as possible.

Lovie: Kendrick Green, Lere Oladipo and Deon Pate are good football players that we'll add to the mix.

#illini not expected to add anyone else today. Coran Taylor still a possibility to sign in February. Told Illinois is still "all-in" on him.

I agree that adding another DE would be nice, but I'm honestly not the least bit concerned with depth there -- more so with class balance. We had a stockpile of DL in the last class (as needed) but this year only have three (Avery, Brown, Pearl) and two of those are interior guys. This is very nitpicky as far as my concerns go. DLine will absolutely be a strength by 2019, with potential to be a top unit in the B1G West by 2020.

Potential 2020 DLine: Gay (senior), Avery (junior), Brown (junior), Roundtree (senior)

Rotation: Green, Carney, Pate, Oladipo, Wood, Pearl, etc.

I think we could see as many as 3-4 guys get drafted from that group. I miss the days of Mercilus, Liuget, Spence, and Buchanon, so this is exciting stuff.

One question was asked about how many will be on campus in the spring. Lovie confirmed from his staff that 4 will be on campus, including Verdis.

He also talked about guys that did not play last year that will now be part of the mix like Kendrick Green and Oladipo. It will be interesting to see the results of Lovie's first red shirt program.

Man this is getting exciting.

I wonder what Smith said to Brown's mother? I've heard Lovie usually wins over the parents. We really dodged a bullet here.

https://247sports.com/college/illin...icago-DL-Verdis-Browns-announcement-112653553

Minutes away from Brown's decision, Illinois was still somewhat in the dark — usually not a good sign in recruiting. Illinois had talked with Brown the previous few days but didn’t get the final word that he was picking Illinois before Friday morning.

Then a phone call came in. It was Brown’s mother.

Smith shooed the rest of his staff out of the room. There, alone in his office, Smith talked to Brown’s mother.

“Coach told us to get out,” said Nate McNeal, the Illinois football director of high school relations.

For the early enrollers - do they count in THIS year's class or last year's class?
