I dunno, is it better to be known in the vague national consciousness as the program with a coach fired for mistreating his players or the program that offers elementary school kids? Most people aren't going to delve into the fine print and will take these stupid headlines at face-value. Hell, I did until this thread reeducated me.

I hope Lovie goes bowling this year. Winning is an amazing antidote.

Lovie Smith will have retired or been fired long before this kid ever reaches campus. I'm sure he had little to do with this offer.

McGee is the one who extended this offer. I think the ultimate goal, if everything were to go right, is to let him take over as HC after Smith retires.

There's so many things that could happen with this kid, however. Football is a rough sport and he could get burned out on it before reaching high school and give it up. He could also find another sport that he excels at.

This gives the kid a little publicity but beyond that there isn't much to it.

However, It would be nice/funny to see him commit and see us be #1 in the 2025 recruiting rankings for many years

Fair enough, it's all about the clicks nowadays.

And bowling sounds good to me.

Just goes to show that you don't automatically get an offer just because you play in Illinois. Gotta fit our system, be in a position of need, or be too good to pass up in this 2018 class.

Two of those guys have been hard commits since April. If they really wanted to play at Illinois they would hold out for that offer. I mean...there is A LOT of time until signing day.

I bet if Alabama did this it would be a touching/heartwarming story and no recruits would be butthurt because they know that if they don't get the Bama offer, it's not because Saban did anything wrong, it's because they weren't good enough for the offer.

I hope Lovie can turn the mentality about Illinois around.

We offered a 10 year old kid and it's a top headline on ESPN.com on NBA draft night.

There are a few CBs indicating that TJ Ivy is heading to West Virginia:

We got another CB for Daniel Barker though:

Hoping we start seeing some CBs for this Young kid! Anybody know his position? Could this offer be out to pressure someone else from his position to commit now? Maybe a 11 or 12 year old?

We're just doing it to offer his little brother as a legacy recruit down the road.

maybe it is a good sign that people actually WANT Illinois offers now?

Sour grapes? Who do they think should be getting Illinois offers who haven't?

That said, how serious of an offer is this? Is it McGee seeing this kid playing and saying, "Son, we'd like to see you play for Illinois some day"?

I have confidence in Lovie and the current staff that they will provide the fans with an exciting and winning team. It takes time to build a football team, but i think the team has finally turned the corner and the team will continue to improve from year to year.

Luke visited us right before he visited Arkansas. He obviously liked Arkansas better which is why he committed there. I'm not sure what has changed since then that would put us ahead of Arkansas outside of the fact that Arkansas didn't want him to visit other schools?

This of course doesn't even take into account the fact that he just visited Alabama and LSU. I'm not sure what love on Twitter is going to do? Hopefully he makes the decision that is best for him and his family.

"Where the Illinois fans at?"

Hey, you don't find them by going to other universities. If you want attention from Illini, then be an Illini yourself. :thumb:

Looks like Kaleb Eleby is announcing today at 5:15. Haven't heard much about his recruitment lately but hoping for some good news in a couple hours.
