I think our issue there was more the QB not throwing to the TE than the actual TE. Barker looks fine. Another year and he should be OK. Though, I would not be opposed to adding one. Dorsey was a loss and we never had him this year and that is on him.

Would love for Illinois to add Ford to the TE room. That said, if I'm Ford I would look elsewhere or would make Illinois provide a comprehensive overview on how they are going to change things on offense to get the TE more involved in the passing game. Would make a lot more sense if he looked around at some other, closer-to-home programs, like Iowa, that use their TEs a lot and envision a better fit.

Jeremy Werner show this am - " I would be suprised if Illinois doesn't get Jeff Thomas"

He also mentioned a Big 12 WR they are in on... not sure who that is currently. Unless it's that WR they didn't get a few years ago from Texas

If you mean Reggie Roberson, he transferred from WVU to SMU last year, and played for SMU this past season. He got to play immediately due to the "being closer to family" rule. So, I'd think it's someone else.

Complete shot in the dark here, but I heard Olin Kreutz on 670 this morning and they brought up his son winning a state title at Loyola. With the obvious connections to Lovie, and John Holecek as his coach, is Olin's son a prospect at all?

Yes, but he's only a Soph, so doesn't graduate until 2021. I'm sure he's going to be highly recruited by us and other programs once the time comes.

Thomas would be a big shot in the arm, with the caveat that I have concerns about the off-the-field issues he's exhibited since high school.

Combine that with the year he'd likely have to sit out, his non-negligible NFL draft stock, Lovie's penchant for kicking kids off the team and the chance that we have a new coach in 2020 and I will react to the possibility of Jeff Thomas in an Illini uniform playing in a real game when I see it

All true, but we do not turn him down under any circumstance if he wants to come here (even though I'm pretty sure that's not what you were suggesting).

I wouldn't say it's likely that he'd have to sit out and Lovie's penchant for kicking kids off team?

Williams is mysterious I suppose but then 3 others charged with Armed Robbery and Home Invasion? Seems like common sense rather than a tendency

I'd put the chances Luke Ford comes here basically zero. You don't choose a place like UGA/Bama/Clemson if you're interested in a rebuilding program. He chose the bright lights over early PT once already (obviously can't blame him for that). I'd be shocked if he completely reversed course.

I'm not gonna pretend to understand the NCAA's arbitrary and opaque transfer policy anymore, I'll just say that based on what we know, Thomas' case for a waiver appears weaker than Ahmad Starks'

I don't know about Ford specifically, but in general kids choices of transfer schools are much more pragmatic and playing time-based than their initial choices as high schoolers. I would guess the novelty and glitz wearing off once you've seen college sports from the inside has a lot to do with that.

Thomas, Tate, Ford? Of course we are not going to end up getting all of them, but the fact that right now we are at least in the races of these three, along with being in the thick of the Cooper race is exciting. These 4 to go along with Eifler, Isaiah, and Marquez could literally turn our team into a division championship contender over night. One can dream...

Would like to think we have a shot with Tate because of OC connection. Don’t see Ford coming. Thomas was a handful at ESL, and I don’t mean that in a good way. Even if he does transfer to the Illini, I think it is a long shot he actually plays a down. Hope I am wrong.

Thomas is a low risk, high reward kid. Lovie has proven he won’t put up with distractions so I think the expectations will be made crystal clear if Thomas wants to be a part of the program. If he were to come here and walk the line he immediately makes our already improved offense very dynamic.

The reason I think Ford is not a complete shot in the dark is because Dorsey earned honors as a true Freshman. Ford has the talent to do something similar at Illinois and would not be able to do the same at Georgia as a blocking tight end. I think it would be smart for Ford to consider the transfer, but I have a little bias.

Dorsey did it under a different OC tho
