I do think the ceiling is higher, but I don't actually think we'll ever sniff that ceiling. Not that I think Fleck would have us winning 9-10 games with any regularity, either, but he seems built for college football -- which I'm not the least bit convinced Lovie is.

With James Franklin getting PSU back to the upper echelon of CFB.....with Scott Frost entering the B1G West......with Michigan State apparently becoming a routine contender......to go along with the usual Ohio State/Michigan/Wisconsin success......it's going to be awfully hard for Illinois, no matter who is coaching, to become anything more than a 7-win team with regularity. I think Fleck would have gotten us to that point, though I still have my doubts with this current staff. But I do agree that the potential is definitely there if they can leverage that NFL reputation in recruiting and bring in blue-chippers.

But I digress. I know Fleck's class is something like #19 in the country right now, but he only has one kid in the top-700. He does seem to be pulling in a lot of quality 3-star kids, though. Definitely not the talent to compete with Ohio State, Penn State, and Michigan.

Could not agree more. However, we currently are on the right track to get there. It is VERY EARLY in the process so it can go all over at this point. But if we were writing a story about the glorious rise of the fighting Illini, the first few chapters would read just like this.

But it's certainly not too early to proclaim Underwood in over his head, eh? :thumb:

Fair play on the callout, but anointing a guy who went from 9-4 to 5-7 is a bit hotter take than expressing alarm at one who went from a bad 20-15 to a much worse 14-18.

Fleck might very well be a great coach at Minny (or a next stop TBD), but I'm not willing to concede that we'd be better off than with what we've got just yet.

I have a feeling some fans will still be saying its early in the process, have faith, 6 years down the road without a winning season

Next weekend is a BIG weekend. I do believe that is the camp being held on campus. I know Beason, Isaiah and Shammond will be there. I hope all three Phillips boys are there

It is this weekend. My son (2021) will be attending 6’4 301 (2021). I may attend Friday night and if I do I will try to get some info!

We won't have to go 6 years. If we get adequate production out of the QB position, the potential is there to win 6-7 games this year.

Is your son participating in the camp? If so, I'd be interested in his/your thoughts on how well run the camp is. I've heard some negative things about how poorly run the camps have been under this staff which has turned some recruits off. Maybe they've gotten better at running the camps?

Best of luck to you and your son.

We should have hired Fleck when we had the chance. But, whatever.

Honestly, I thinks this may be correct. Not because lovie is worse, but because fleck would have been better and faster at getting us from 2 wins to 6 before he left for another team. Then lovie could take over with a team that could be coached up. Lovie biggest challenge will be getting off the ground. We had such talent depletion when lovie got here. But he will still have to show something next year and the following. I think we are trending up

Talent depletion? Sure, a lot of middle of the pack Mac-level players (and I'm being generous) left. We weren't going to win with those guys.

Yes. That is what I am saying. We had lack of BIG talent on the roster. I think Fleck would have brought some western guys (which were higher caliber recruits than we had) and hit the ground running with recruiting. Lovie has been doing great, but we seem to be moving a little slower because Lovie is re-establishing himself in the college recruiting world. I think Lovie is going to hit his stride in a few years, which would be better than Fleck would have done. But, I thin Fleck would have had us to 6=7 wins this season.

I'll give you some news that will make you sick to your stomach, former 5 * QB and Clemson transfer Hunter Johnson has decided to go to Northwestern.

We were told by several coaches to stay away from the camp because of this reason. Being an Illini family, we wanted to go anyway. If I am able to go, I will report back what I see.

Other college coaches? Or high school coaches?

Those are good points. My preference for Fleck actually has nothing to do with recruiting though, and more about how he relates to 18-22 year olds. Say what you want about his "row the boat" gimmicks, but the guy has cultivated some serious team culture and sense of togetherness. That togetherness stuff can be all for nothing if there's no brain behind the branding (see Groce, John), but Fleck seems to be able to coach.

I see Fleck vs. Lovie sort of the way I see James Franklin vs. Jim Harbaugh. Harbaugh just seems built for the pro game -- the way he handles himself, handles his players, approaches the game. That's not to say he can't be successful in college -- he certainly was at Stanford. But he seems better suited managing grown men, and seems to prefer it. Franklin, on the other hand, is a motivator who relates to the kids, and creates that high-energy attitude that really works at the college level.

Imagine if John Groce could actually coach? That's PJ Fleck, IMO. I see him as a slightly better version of Tim Miles. Annoying as hell if he's not your coach, but built to lead kids at this level.

Groce was a gym teacher, Fleck is a used car salesman. There's a difference.

Not many used car salesmen take a MAC team to the Cotton Bowl.

I don't envision Fleck winning more than 7-8 games a year at Minnesota (on average), but that's more than what we're going to win under Lovie -- at least in my estimation. And frankly, I cannot fathom how you could ride the Tim Beckman train for so long and dismiss Fleck so quickly. How does that work?

I'd have tolerated Fleck in the same way. It's not like I enjoyed listening to Beckman speak, I just thought it was better for the program that he get a fair shake.

How we made it to 6-6 in 2014 I will never understand.

Good for them. We'll have Isaiah Williams, and I couldn't be happier. :chief:

.

Littyville anyone?

Lovie can coach, he has proven that in the NFL. Remains to be seen at the college level of course, but imho that will be more of a recruiting thing than a coaching thing.

"On paper," he has a good plan. He has coaches with NFL experience and college experience. Some teachers and some recruiters. He wants to build a program, not a quick fix. How many times did we hear on national tv about the NFL coaching experience of Michigan? We have more, but are not there yet as a program so I don't expect those accolades to flow. Until we start winning, then I think you'll hear it often.

Remains to be seen with Fleck as well. Can he win in the Big Ten with MAC talent? He is recruiting well, but not exactly lights out.

Ok this "Illinois coaches cant run a good camp" thing needs to be looked into.

Jeremy Werner! Make sure you take a look at these post when your doing your trolling on here to figure out what to talk to on your radio show. How come we have not heard any such things on your show yet?

Fleck now has commits from 3 top-10 Illinois HS prospects. Last time Illinois accomplished that? 2009 (Buchanan, Hawthorne, Buckner)

Disappointing but not surprising. Fleck's shtick resonates with some of these kids and they grew up watching some pretty poor Illini teams. By the way, it appears that the 10th ranked player who committed to MN would be about the 100th ranked player in your state. I know some might disagree for perception purposes, but I would be just as happy pulling 3 top 100 Texas kids as I would 3 top 10 Illinois prospects.
