The momentum is real with this staff and the turnaround is coming. But please temper your expectations for this season. It's not going to be very good, but it doesn't matter.

This.

It matters. We ought to see improvements on the field and I believe we will.

Of course we'll see improvements and we should expect that, but 3-4 wins seems pretty likely. I'm confident the staff will be able to keep recruits even with only 3-4 wins. But the fans need to have realistic expectations so we don't have a bunch of idiots talking about firing Lovie when we're sitting in November with 1 B1G win.

I expect no bowl in 2018, a minor bowl in 2019, and a shot at a really good season in 2020.

This is why we got these two and it has nothing to do with new facilities or nonsense like Lovie finally got better recruiters.

My brother in law retired to Charleston SC many years ago. Two years ago he walks into a coffee shop and an older fellow is in there wearing an Illinois sweatshirt. He asked the fellow if he also went to Illinois and the guy says "No but my son Gimbal President played football there.

Dad then explained that his son wanted some playing time to at least showcase what he could so for the NFL but it was equally important that he get his Masters.

Lovie promised that every resource of the athletic department was at his disposal to achieve those goals, tutoring, weight room, etc. even after his final season was over.

Then dad says "they lived up to every promise".

Recruiting is about relationships and they take time.

My brother in law still sees dad around Charleston and quite often he is in orange and blue.

I think the coaching staff is working a one commit per week rotation. Allow each player to get the national fanfare, while keeping momentum alive.

From what I understand, we have 4 or 5 waiting to commit. I hope I'm right.

Some key excerpts from the article:

Nine other Trinity Catholic players with Power Five offers visited Champaign with Williams last weekend, according to Illini Inquirer.

Coach Patterson has been like a father figure for me since I was 6,” Williams told Illini Inquirer.

Not discounting the story one bit, but keep in mind that Gimel President started his career at Auburn, who happen to also be orange and blue.

So how good is this Trinity team? No silly remarks how they could beat last Years Illini. But how darn good and do they play a national schedule or Missouri and Illinois teams?

Good to hear, and I don't doubt any of it, however, Gimel President actually transferred to Illinois while Bill Cubit was still coach. Still good to hear how well Lovie treated him.

Based on Werner's video with Isaiah, it sure seems like Illinois has been the team to beat basically his entire recruitment. That's pretty amazing. This kid really trusts Lovie and the staff.

Can someone summarize the interview? I'm at a conference today and won't be able to listen for a while? Thanks in advance!

This is based off memory:
1. Isaiah was ready to commit to Illinois back when he went up with Larry on his visit.
2. For the 'most part' Illinois was the team to beat from day 1
3. He would be in Illinois regardless if CPatterson was hired or not
4. He is going to come in and work really hard to win the starting QB position (but he also mentioned how Ill was going to allow him to play other positions)
5. He has already taken a bunch of photos of his teammates wearing ILL gear
A. Quick mention that we got a good chance at Shammond. Then he kind of got quite. I took it as, he didn't want to steal any of Shammond's thunder on the recruiting process.
6. The relationships with the coaches and the ILL fans are the reason he chose ILL. (he mentioned the fans at least twice)
7. He was a little jealous Beason was the first commit. But that is his brother

I think that about summed it up.

This is great news! Does anyone have a link to the video of Lovie doing pushups at practice earlier this year?

#617
Play him. Bama showed you can throw youth in there at QB when you have the right talent.

Awesome news. Go Illini

BTW, we have 2 CB's for Shammond Cooper, Williams teammate and a 4 star LB recruit.

This is likely the most important recruit on Illinois' board. So badly need some LB's.

The only position left that I believe is still "open" for a true freshman to play right away on the defense is linebacker.
