With this perpetual need at LB, I'm surprised the staff only has two offers out on 2020 LBs. One of those offers is a pipe dream: 3rd overall recruit in the country in an area that Illinois has not excelled (CA). The other is right in the staff's target area: Antonio Doyle, LB from Lutheran North in STL. He's on a similar rank as Cooper and already has quite a few good offers (Texas A&M, Nebraska, Kentucky, Mizzou). Would be a great recruiting win. But again, why only two offers? I know it's early, but it's already one of the positions with the least amount of offers.
Just some guesses:
-We're probably waiting for a new DC/LB coach before extending offers to 2020 LBs. It would be hard to recruit LBs when you don't have an LB coach. Just going by the recent offers to 2021 kids, a lot of them are thanking the position coaches for the offers.
-If we are sticking with the 4-2-5 base then we really don't need to allocate that many scholarships to LB.
-There don't appear to be a lot of great in-state or St. Louis area LB targets right now. Maybe some will emerge during the Spring evaluation period or they identify some more targets in Texas and Florida. I would guess/hope that these new position coaches have already established a few targets of their own assuming they aren't coming from the NFL.
-Maybe they are happy with Hollins and Tolson? It's hard to get a grip on how they feel about the younger LBs. All we can go by is playing time and neither guy got much playing time at LB last year. Most of their snaps were on Special Teams. To your point, this seems less likely as the reason since these guys will be upperclassmen by 2020 anyways and a number of our LBs will be gone after 2020.
