You can sell me on the staff didn't want a repeat of the Rolder recruitment on pressed Griffin hard immediately to close down his recruitment before the scholarship vultures start circling. We'll see if he gets offers from other schools regardless.
He's already committed to Illinois Baseball and per Jeremy Werner it sounds like Bielema and Coach Hartleb (Baseball) have been teaming up to discuss Rolder playing dual sports while at Illinois (Hartleb did this with Kyle Hudson back in the early 2000's).

Also to note, Iowa, Michigan and other Power 5 programs did not offer until AFTER Illinois offered.

At 6'2" 190 this young man will have the frame and the coaching to become a fantastic player in this secondary.

Good pickup.

Really hoping the staff gets rewarded with a Rolder commitment to the football program.

Cincinnati, OH
Josiah Miamen transferring from Iowa. TE from Dunlap. Guessing Illinois will be interested.

Isaiah Bruce also from Illinois and transferring from Iowa. Maybe there's something there but no previous Illinois interest when he was a high schooler.

Those are very, very mediocre #'s. I was a distance runner and had better sprint #'s than that. On the flip side, nice offer list!
Well being a long distance runner is significantly different than being a Big Ten football player. I’m not sure that your judgment of mediocre is reliable. I’m more concerned with the first few yards and explosiveness than I am with the 200th yard or meter. Does he have football speed, awareness & explosiveness? Obviously he does based on who has been recruiting him.

Ok. His speed and explosion numbers are not mediocre. They are downright bad for varsity track. I say this as a varsity track coach, who specializes in jumps. His long jump would indicate he either doesn’t bring enough speed into his jump, or he can’t transition his speed well enough to explode. The 200 time would indicate the former, but either are a problem.

Again, to be frank here, the 200 time is downright bad. I watched the Texas regional track meet last year and multiple girls ran sub 25. Our sprint coach (former Olympian) uses 25 seconds in the 200 as a training 3/4 training tempo for our boys.

None of this is to say he can’t play D1 football because I’m not a D1 football coach. It says he looks to lack raw athleticism, which track is a great projector of.

I would assume by looking at his track times they don't look good, but last year Covid maybe had something to do with the track team at his school. We had Crumby on the team with one of the fastest times in Tx track and could barely make it on the field. I think that one thing is missed comparing football and track is what kind of instincts does this recruit have playing football. His football instincts might be off the charts. I hope he becomes all Big Ten by his junior year.

IMHO, I look at offers and hudl highlights. He has some big offers.

At 2 minutes in his Jr season highlights it looks like he has plenty of speed and there is a lot of speed on Miami HS football teams.

I’m not trying to be argumentative, I’m just trying to to say that some guys can just play, and play well, no matter what their #’s or times look like.

Those two events are pretty indicative of someone's speed and athleticism, and I was being charitable when I said they were mediocre. Those #'s wouldn't place in a dual meet between Gibson City and Hoopeston. Given his offer list those were probably from a single meet he participated in as a freshman or something; he wouldn't be D1 caliber if they were indicative of his ability

I’m certainly not going to get worked up or judge a player on high school 200 and long jump numbers found on the internet. Often hard enough finding accurate game/season stats for high school football players despite the attention paid to recruiting. Have to believe accurate and/or current track and field stats are even more difficult to come by on the internet — especially with a Covid year in there.

Throw out all the stats when the Falcons and Cornjerkers clash!

The numbers seem to be recent, but I found a different number for his LJ.

19’ 5.25”

Not sure if that is competitive or not, I never did LJ back in the day.

I think we all need to remember though that track speed isn’t football speed. There are many coaches who like to recruit raw speed from the track ranks but holding on to that speed in full pads is completely different than running on the track.

Maybe McCantos can still run a 25s 200 speed even WITH pads on. That could explain some of his offers.

From watching his tape, the numbers have to be incorrect. My daughter who ran track in college had very similar numbers coming out of high school. My son who was a D2 All American in the 4x400 and a D1 Eastern regional qualifier in the 400 meter hurdles, used to have to run 24's for 200 meter work outs doing multiple sets. So no one is being critical it's just that those numbers don't jive with his fast twitch abilities especially in the LJ. I've seen great 40 meter guys die in the last 20 meters of the hundred and look like they've been shot trying to run the 200 but the LJ numbers wouldn't and shouldn't be affected by that!

How do we look with Magnus? I see he also visited Louisville.

Let’s be honest here, if the guy is getting the recruiting interest he had could it be more likely the high school track times kept and entered by someone whose probably not a professional could be wrong.

Illinois baseball commit whose dad was a former Illini and we were one of the first P5 offers. We got a LONG ways to go to “lock up the state” as Brett put it.
Well….
