Maybe I am missing something here, how are we to develop a QB if we keep brining in transfers? Not complaining as we do have solid replacements for TDV but how can we sell the QB position to HS prospects if we keep transfers rolling in via the portal?

Seems like it's a choice these days. Winning and playing time are both important needs to sell your program to recruits... but winning brings a whole bunch of other benefits. I guess the thinking is that there will always be decent QBs in the portal until you find a HS prospect to sign on?

I stand corrected !

I believe I saw somewhere that he is registered. Also saw that he is walking on. Anyone else see/can confirm that?

making more sense now
his uncle played WR on the 1984 Rose Bowl team - a good possession type receiver guy. Played a fair amount. His grandfather and maybe great grandpa had a Northwestern Mutual Life Ins/ Financial Services agency in C-U and always advertised in the gameday program . Him walking on at UI is likely not an issue financially for the family and something that probably gives the family a lot of pride Good for him .

A guy like him may be very likely to get some playing time . We were lucky this year with minimal injuries to TDV

Jon Wright was really good! Uniform #5 in your Illini Football program. Left the Illini as a Top 10 all-timer receiving in school history. Played for Mackovic.

"The third generation of a famous Illini sports family, John Wright II, left Illinois in 1992 seventh on the school''s career receiver list. Wright never had a bigger play than the touchdown catch he made to beat the Badgers 13-12 in 1992. John and his wife Laura, have four daughters. Hence, there won''t be a fourth generation Wright playing football at Illinois."

News Gazette: When you''re at Illinois in 1992, you aren't supposed to be losing to the Badgers, are you?

JW: Not at all. I was at Illinois five years and we were 5-0 against Wisconsin. Wisconsin, at that point, was just becoming a Big Ten power. We knew they were a good team."

The only three generation football family at Illinois?
Believe he'll be the 4th generation of the family.........

John Wright, Sr., his father, Bob Wright, and his son, John Wright II are the only three-generation Illini football family, while Wright, Sr. and Wright II are the only father-son duo to earn Academic All-American honors.

redshirt junior.
his uncle and grandfather both played football at Illinois.

You are all missing the point here: From the article: "also two-time all-conference in golf"
You know Coach Small had a hand in this recruitment!

High volume at Ball State last year. Avg 40 attempts, completing ~ 60% - great addition and raises the floor of the QB room, in all likelihood.
Interesting that he is a walk-on.

John Wright was a stud running back from Wheaton Highschool (in our conference ) and I saw him play...DYNAMITE! Also won the state (or finished high) in the 100 yard dash.

He was converted to a wide receiver at Illinois (circa 1964) and made some all American teams. I believe he was drafted by the Lions but was not utilized well and had a short injury-riddled career. His grandson doesn't seem to have inherited his running abilities, but is about the same size.

Love those John Wright memories!!

If this was a scholarship play with Paddock it is a blah move.....being a walk on move it is a solid pickup. In the past Illinois had more QBs able to play at the MAC level or below and struggle in Big Ten play. Glad to see they are not our main guy anymore but depth pieces now.

we landed redshirt Soph Luke Altmyer through the portal already. we are not likely going to get anyone worth talking about to come be a backup.
its possible though after spring ball. just not real likely.
John set you up. 🤣
