Some of these transfers that were snubbed out of H.S. and spend one or two years with a chip on their shoulders....now rolling up to their P5 portal visits like...

Similar to Illinois NIL model. Illinois top players make 6 figures with our total NIL topping 2+ mil
If you were to estimate, what would you say the tiers in the B1G look like?

IE, Ohio St / Michigan / Penn St - Tier 1, X NIL
Wisconsin / Iowa - Tier 2, X NIL
Etc

How far are we off from the middle of the pack & the top of the B1G?

Everyone structures it differently. We like to spend more on player retention than let’s call it free agency. I would put us in the middle of the pack in terms of money we have to spend. Probably towards the top of the middle of the pack too if that makes sense. We won’t ever be OSU or Michigan to where if a player says they need 2 mil to come they can get it done no problem.

$2million. For one year??? Wow. I thought it was around $250K.
This is crazy. How can mid tier schools compete?

$2 million is top QB money or someone like Harrison. Which is also why I laughed about the articles over the past month where folks are acting like Ohio State can make an NIL offer to Harrison that will match top-3 NFL draft money. For example, Will Anderson went 3rd overall last year and is going to make $35 million guaranteed over the length of his deal. If his 5th year option is picked up, that number will likely pass $50 million.

They can’t compete with a top 5 pick money wise but Harrison is a unique situation because he really does love Ohio state and wants to beat Michigan and win the CFP….so they could offer enough for him to entertain the idea of coming back. I still think he will go but it’s not as cut and dry as people think.

My understanding is that the NIL amounts that a collective "guarantees" typically does not include endorsement $$ that a player can earn through his or his agent's own efforts (see: Shedeur Sanders, Caleb Williams). Extremely few guys build enough of a brand in HS/college for those dollars to be meaningful, but Marvin Harrison might be one of the few exceptions. That said, I still don't think that gets Harrison anywhere close to Top 5 Pick NFL money, and given the injury risk, I think that leaving that on the table for another year would be crazy.

As far as the seemingly weekly questions about "where do we rank in NIL resources?" I'll just say . . . this is an endless arms race and Icon sure could use everyone's help. https://www.iconforillini.com/

So the recent articles claiming Harrison was in the ~$20M NIL range are not credible. Good to know for those who're thinking $2M is bananas.
What's the best way for folks to contribute to our NIL? If we got a decent grassroots surge across our fanbase (even if just a one time $20), that could have a big impact and get us closer to the big spenders.

Looks like Icon requires community service on part of the athlete. Is that how they all work at our competitors too (like Purdue or Wisconsin e.g.)? Are there any other options than Icon?

If he goes number 1 over all his total contract will be around 45 million

Sure, but there's a big difference between (a) Ohio State can make an NIL offer similar to a top-5 pick and (b) Harrison might come back because he has unfinished business. People make bad business decisions. I'd still heavily expect him to be shown how much money he's risking by coming back and he'll declare.

Don't know whether someone posted this earlier in the month. This morning I saw this long-form article about football in Mississippi in the print edition of The Washington Post. When I went online to find it I see it's dated December 18th. Anyway, it's not paywalled (I don't have a subscription and could access it) and Trey Petty features prominently in it. Also a profile of his coach, Chris Jones.

Where tackle football still reigns
In Mississippi, football — that’s the tackle version — is still viewed by many young people as a source of pride and a way out, despite the game’s risks.
