His top end speed is impressive, but he's extremely slow getting out of the backfield. He doesn't hit the hole quickly and has to make two moves to get back to the line of scrimmage. If he gets a full head of team, that top end speed is extremely impressive. This issue is the initial explosion, which after 1.5 years, really doesn't seem to be there. That could all change however. We never know.

The other poster's point is valid. At his size and speed, assuming he enjoys contact....linebacker makes all kinds of sense. If he wants to stay in the backfield, he needs to get significantly quicker getting started, which would probably entail taking some pounds off.
He beat out all the guys that are coming back….

The combination of quick twitch speed is what I was referring to. I appreciate ya doing a better job clarifying what I was getting at.

I think the reality is...after a hip surgery? Getting back to where he was would be great. Hard to imagine the quickness becoming exponentially better at this moment.

Absolutely right. Quickness (acceleration) and speed are two entirely different things.

Hey, if he takes the job over the spring and summer, I'm all about it as long as the competition is open and legit. Assuming McCray is coming back? He, Laughery, Valentine, etc. deserve every last crack at winning that job(the bulk of the carries). From what I've seen, he's been the beneficiary of being a high prep recruit. That said, Coach B has more football knowledge in one nut than I do in my entire being....so he'll make the right call.

I'm looking at this from the perspective of a father, which I'm sure most of us on here are..I'd be pushing my son to consider the move. He can certainly win the starting job and make an All-B1G at Illinois. However, if you want to do this for a career?? You need to be a Saquan Barkley or Derrick Henry-type talent. If not chances are you'll never see past that rookie RB contract.

If you're saying he's gotten carries/reps just because, that's very invalid. Was by far and away the best back his freshman year... and was fairly unanimously agreed upon as the best back going into this year.

IMO Feagin lacks the vision to be an elite RB.

Lets get Jordan Anderson in the weight room as well and turn him into a full time fullback. Open up some holes the the RB crew. JA is 6'4 240. He needs some reps as well, end his career with a bang. JA would be perfect for the T formation we ran in the bowl game, lead blocker.

Some of you may not remember FB Mike Alstot from Purdont. Alstot was a beast.
I'm not sure why as I don't know much about him, but for some reason I really want Jordan Anderson to succeed at Illinois.

I'm also missing what the coaches are seeing. I see good top end speed, eventually. I don't see any other college (let alone NFL) RB traits? I'm just missing it. I'll also go on record as saying, upon contact, Valentine has poor balance. Really poor. Perhaps that changes with the off season strength training. I hope so because he does have talent.

I was somewhat down on the Illinois RB's, then Laughery had Northwestern and then SC. He looked really good.

Laughery didn't show all that much in games, and then, he did. Moral of the story, stick with it, the coaches have seen it. Not everyone else has.

I am not a football genius but would agree on Valentine.. He is a great back to put in later in a game when a defense is getting tired and we need to adjust the speed of the attack. But he IMO is a back that needs to run wide and not up the middle.

I wish we would do more with the run game with 2 backs in the backfield and see what happens.. I think all of our backs could be more productive and the offense be less predictable. I get good runs come because of good blocking but i think we telegraph where the play is going to often.

Also if all of our running backs were ever all healthy at the same time, all of our thoughts and 2nd guessing would not be needed. We saw the past few games what it was like finally having a healthy AL and JM..

CFP or bust! What gives me even more hope for next year is that with JC coming back and DJ on the way our OLine will be better than this year and we ended the year with our OLine playing really well. Henderson is ready now and DJ will be an upgrade over either guard spot

The knock on impact will be that Luke is one of the best QBs in the country when he had a clean pocket and not very good when he doesn’t- every QB is better when clean of course but Luke’s difference is one of the largest in the country. SC wasn’t a fluke, we were the better team even without PB largely due to how our OL dominated

Our defense was good all year (absent one half against Purdue - the Oregon game, I’ll throw out given literally nothing went our way that game). If Jacas and X come back, we will be even better on D next year. I really do think 10 wins and a CFP spot should be the goal- we will be that good

This thread has went to crazy town. We want to move our best RB when healthy to linebacker.

We want to move another to play fullback. Are we gonna run the wishbone? Does that position still exist in 2024.

What does exist in 2024 is the transfer portal and both players would enter if you asked them to switch positions.

If we run 21 personnel we would take a wr off the field and another linebacker would be in the box. Don’t think running into a loaded box is the answer.
