Yeah, it’s unbelievable where we have landed, and it seems to keep getting worse. We have the dominos from of a coaching carousel. Are we now going to have a player carousel whenever a prime starting job opens up? At least the pros have multi year deals. This seems like it’s headed to a year by year free agency unless something changes.
this is what is right now in basketball , and is most definately where it will be for a bigger portion of football players

I had a lengthy post in my mind about what's going on in college sports now , but decided it was an outdated point of view comparing what's happening now compared to what's happened in the past...........The old adage that's always been true to me
of " change is necessary for growth " still rings true in my mind today.....but , with that in mind , there definitely needs to be some guardrails to govern the bizarre scenarios we see today........

I commend Tenn for drawing a line in the sand regarding their former QB1 , but their now pursuing QB1's at other schools only prolongs the needed brakes on this abnormal state of affairs we see daily.........

What's occurring now shows that your word or even your signature matters nigh...........the almighty $$$ is the driver and loyalty and honesty take a back seat to the staggering amounts of money being thrown around now.........the line of difference between pro sports and college sports is so fine that it begs to question where and what the future path is........

I guess my age and what used to matter in society now has gone by the wayside......I know if I was an athlete today or a parent of an athlete today I probably would look at this in a different way.......but something needs to change or I see the fans getting priced out of the enjoyment of college sports either by exorbitant prices of tickets or gross increases in viewing TV and online said sporting events.........Will we see Pay Per View shows of the Illini games at $ 59.95 each and every game ?????

The total shift of amateurism to the sidelines and becoming an extinct species brings a tear to my old eyes....it really really does..

As always , JMHO....................
I'm with you on one aspect of this Pru - I will miss the amateurism side of things. However, there is another aspect I will not miss: the false loyalty proclaimed by players looking to quell rumors of their imminent departure.

In very few extreme cases does this ever happen with pro sports, and pretty much only the meatheads really perpetuate any kind of anger toward players who depart in free agency.

In this college landscape, "commitments" should no longer matter, and "contracts" should. Until players are made contracted employees of the University in such a way as to protect both the player and the team, this kind of thing will continue. And once that happens, most people will not question it when a player departs for another school. It won't really come as a surprise on Easter Sunday or whatever. In fact, it's quite unlikely that you'll see "flips" any longer after this because no one will sign a deal until they're absolutely sure.

Your not alone in this thinking my friend.

Yes, at least this will be officially over in the next 5 days. The funny thing is, I’m sure this will be the next thing to be challenged in court (you cant restrict rights to earn money on NIL, why should colleges be able to restrict rights to transfer when they want in a free market?). Which will lead to total chaos and ruin the game even further
The question becomes why can professional leagues have so much tighter controls and regulations in place and the NCAA can’t? The ONLY thing that will change all of this is if people stop watching and attending games. We know that won’t happen.

I wonder if at some some colleges and universities branch off from the NCAA and form a new, truly amateur, athletic association that focuses on the fundamental values of student athletes participating in athletics as part of the broader educational experience. Honestly, at this point, I would be drawn to that. It’s just a complete bastardization of sports in general that will continue filtering down to younger kids.

Yeah, there is probably something to the fact that they reached out to Luke’s team and there were conversations given the smoke from UT insiders- but I would have to think BB and Josh would do what it takes to keep him. Luke also doesn’t seem like the type to leave just for the most money, he knew he could get more if he went to the portal.

Tennessee being the college football hero for standing up to greedy players only to tamper with everyone else’s QB to try to pry kids off a team with promises of $1M more money is the ultimate villain arc if I’ve ever seen one
College football is a Business. Except if a player has a contract dispute, then it's about school spirit.

Commitment Matters. Unless we need a QB, then it's all about winning.

The media's love for Tennessee always seemed silly with I'ma'leave'ya, Heupel & UT.

the punter from Nebraska is in the portal .
They just got him from Washington in January but are going with the rugby punt philosophy after hiring a new special teams coach in February

Would be absolutely shocking if Luke left … Luke is a loyal guy … Legacy is important … Why would he just wanna be another guy at Tennessee vs. potentially the guy who lead Illinois to a CFB playoff …

As far as people saying oh he wants to get paid … He’s getting paid very, very well here … We have just as many NFL scouts through our building as Tennessee does … And let’s just call it what it is … The kid comes from a little money and doesn’t have to help pay the bills back home …

Bret has built that relationship … Barry and Art have built that relationship … I trust Luke when he says that matters more to him than anything else …

Happy Easter … 🐰

Ehh will see what really happens. Alot of things will depend on the house committee and if they decide that pay whatever you want stays or if they will somehow make it to where it evens out the playing field.

On a side note think it's time for Shad Khan to get that honorary degree.

Because professional players are employees and that makes all the difference in the world.

Sucks, but I am still excited about this class. Still have Thomas at DB, and if we can get Tilson and/or Hankins +/- our typical instate late bloomer or underrecruited FL DB we will be looking really strong.

Only a few candidates Tennessee can reach out to considering that SEC transfers would need to sit out a year.
So how can the SEC make them sit a year, but not the NCAA? If one is a restraint of trade so is the other. In reality neither is

They think it’ll be easy going against Bret …

Ask Beamer how that went …

Does B1G as a whole ever chip in to help retain players from leaving for the SEC? Seems to me it would benefit the conference as a whole to retain players like Luke if Illinois doesn't have the funds to keep him. (Hypothetical)

TV money and the house settlement is going to do some work

Would not be too worried about the Luke rumors. Familly means more to him than money. He’s getting paid like an SEC QB here already
And if pay is comparable, which university will give him more visibility and a stronger legacy/reputation?

Totally agree with everything here.
How do people think Tennessee was going to get a QB??
This seems like UT boosters scouting out possible QBs and thinking Luke could be easily had from Illini. Confident, and spreading the info before anything is agreed.
The truth is, no one on the UT board really knows, but he is definitely being talked about a lot by the fans. Usually that starts from somewhere and based on a couple people who are usually right, it does seem like he's at least listening to the Vols pitch. I'm a UT fan, fyi, who posts over there a lot.

You guys have a good board. Most of them are money grabs or set up on 1993 interfaces (just check the Mizzou board if you want a headache) VolNation is a good board like this too.
You didn't have to admit to being an UT fan. We could tell by your previous posts.. 😆

We’re already there.

My wife graduated thanks to full-ride athletic scholarships, but had to sit out one season after a transfer. The NCAA could impose such a rule and it would put a nice damper on this merry-go-round. There’s no legal obstacle to doing it since it’s just an eligibility rule with no effect on compensation. Allow the transfer and allow paying as much as you like, but limit playing time after a transfer and you’d see both universities and players become much more selective. Why not?
The Cat's already out of the bag on this, seriously doubt they can put it back. The precedent has been set and any attempt to step backwards in time on this will result in a flurry of lawsuits.
