Exactly. He must have just realized he has to LIVE in the state of Illinois for the next 2 years. The apology is just damage control to TRY to limit the number of times he’s going to be called a punk (or worse) to his face in the next 2 years of his day-to-day life for his own foolishness.
Seems like a kid that will end high school at a football factory like IMG.

Sometimes we have to deal with negative consequences to learn that we made bad choices, especially as a teen. Damage control apology or not at least it shows that there is some level of caring about how he presents himself and what other people think about him. Cliff never cared enough to do that much.

That said if his family was in on it THEY certainly should have known better.

Lastly we kind of look like sore losers with some of the comments. Forgive and let it go but don't forget.

If the biggest reason he didn’t commit here was that they didn’t have his major, that’s pretty dumb to disrespect the team during the commitment. What I wanted to do at the end of my junior year had changed a ton by the time I graduated. Changed a few times in college too. Hopefully kid can learn from it and mend some bridges.

Also, dude…what major does Illinois not have that Nebraska, LSU, and A&M do?

Bret strikes me as the type of guy who wouldn’t hold this against the kid if he eventually wanted to transfer here. But he also strikes me as a guy who might casually order up a few extra blitzes for him in the interim.
Maybe he could make a portal video, pick up a husk of corn and announce he was staying at Nebraska, throw the corn, and then rip open his shirt to announce a transfer to Illinois. :p

Illini doesnt want low character kids like that, go play for a third tier Big Ten program and enjoy
Yes, and not tough, smart, or dependable. Neither are the people around him. Glad we now know. My dad would’ve whooped me for a disrespectful stunt like that for all 3 of the other schools.

Hopefully he’s in store for a future spear from Beerman. We’ll see if he even cracks QB1 at Nebraska…bottom line, our guys won’t forget and he better be ready to run for his life against us.

Dumb kid does dumb thing. Whatever. It was totally classless. I did completely classless things at that age too, luckily I wasn't in a position where the general public cared one way or the other. To the adults in his life that let this happen, what were you even thinking? That part blows my mind.

I think the right approach here for the fanbase is to not let this occupy any more of our headspace and let any karma that needs to be exercised be exercised on the field. If he ever actually suits up for Nebby, this is great locker room material. In that sense, he gave us something we can use that we would not have had with a straightforward commitment.

Would have been cool to land him, but tea leaves clearly read he was going to Nebraska all the way last few months. Why disrespect Arthur and the staff that put in a ton of work recruiting you and building a relationship with you? Little punk !!! !!!!!.
Exactly! Everyone knew he was going to Nebraska, so who did he think he was fooling by putting on the Illinois hat? Totally unnecessary.

Well, like many others have said... he is just an immature kid. The adults around him indicate he may stay that way for many years. They are seeing dollar signs.

I don't think people really cared about that, it was him throwing the hat that has people pissed.
I understand why people are mad. I was mad when he threw the hat too. I was just saying there was no reason to even put the hat on to throw it because we all knew he was going to Nebraska anyway.

His family put him in a no-win situation with this. You rarely see players who pull stunts like that go on to have successful college careers, and the reaction across social media was pretty unanimous, it wasn’t a good look.

I spent a couple of days at an event with some major Nebraska boosters, and based on our conversations about college sports, I’d bet a beach house they weren’t thrilled about him representing the university that way. My guess is the apology video only came out after someone at Nebraska stepped in and told him it needed to be addressed.
does our staff provide guidance on "don'ts" to avoid classless media events and posts; or do we trust character and that good people don't do stupid things

to any who is

* mad about throwing the hat
* making comments about the kid's character
* making snarky comments about his parents

JUST STOP. SERIOUSLY. These are kids. They make mistakes. They do things they think will be funny when they aren't.

But for you - ACT LIKE AN ADULT. Not an immature teenager (unless you are one). He threw a hat. Whatever. These comments make you and us look like petty morons. In short ..

GROW THE EFF UP.

Be a fan, not an idiot who puts yourself on a pedestal who says "I would have never..." Oh really? You never did anything dumb as a 17 year old? Perhaps you will get a vote at the Conclave next week. (I'm voting for Cardinal Pizzaballa)

Use it as locker room material and MOVE ON.

Does this mean the proposed 105-man roster limit for this year is out the window?
I think it’s on hold right now

suffice to say a bunch of out pwo’s still might be moved off the roster if it gets enacted for coming season

Agree 100%. I assume we’re mostly all adults here — many much older than younger. Getting worked up over the actions of a 17 year old is not something anyone outside of their 20s should think too long about.

Having said that… as sports fans, we like to have villains. When game time rolls around, it wouldn’t hurt my feelings if Illinois gave him the Dylan Rosiek treatment. But that’s game day. I refuse to have a heart attack for reasons outside of that window. 😉

Ah, to be 15 again and believe that apologies can be an "undo" button.

It's quite adorable seeing the Husker fans talk about how mature he is for this apology... as if there is any reason in the world to assume that it was his idea and something he wanted to do.
Late to the party and several pages behind, but this. Actions speak louder than words.

Never had a huge dislike for Nebraska (no B1G history back to my day) but if this kid plays for them they will move far up the list.

It does look like it is going to temporarily be out-the-window as the judge overseeing the House matter wants the settlement to grandfather in existing players, so the new roster limits will probably end up being phased in rather than implemented all in one fell swoop. Nobody knows yet what exactly this will all look like.

He's a 17 year old kid who did something stupid and insensitive because he thought it would be cool. It happens
My first thought was that he's a great fit for big baby Matt Ruhle. My second thought was I'm surprised Ruhle had time to recruit him what with all the time he spends crying about officiating.

#175
What's the O/U that Rhule will still be the Coach? It's got to be trending at least less than 35% with the current trend.
