Occam's Razor applies, as it usually does: the young man's parents raised a son who behaves in this matter.

It really is that simple.

It makes me crazy when people say, "that's not who I am". You said it, so that's EXACTLY who you are!
I agree with this gripe. I’m not even that mad about what he did. I’m also glad he reflected on that and realized he needed to apologize. But it irritates me in general when people say, “that’s not who I am.” Say you regret what you did, it was a mistake, you learned a lesson, you’ll do better, whatever, but saying, “that’s not who I am” just feels like deflecting blame and responsibility for your actions.

Rant over. I genuinely don’t hold significant ill will toward Trae, and hope he learned a lesson. That said, I’m glad I don’t see our recruits doing stuff like this.

to any who is

* mad about throwing the hat
* making comments about the kid's character
* making snarky comments about his parents

JUST STOP. SERIOUSLY. These are kids. They make mistakes. They do things they think will be funny when they aren't.

But for you - ACT LIKE AN ADULT. Not an immature teenager (unless you are one). He threw a hat. Whatever. These comments make you and us look like petty morons. In short ..

GROW THE EFF UP.

Be a fan, not an idiot who puts yourself on a pedestal who says "I would have never..." Oh really? You never did anything dumb as a 17 year old? Perhaps you will get a vote at the Conclave next week. (I'm voting for Cardinal Pizzaballa)

Use it as locker room material and MOVE ON.
I don’t really care about the issue or the kid, but I find a post telling people to be mature in the most immature way possible to be really amusing. Agree with my position and ACT LIKE AN ADULT and GROW THE EFF UP. Hilarious!

I was one of those who watched the Cliff Alexander commitment live with a watch party. That was an awful experience. This had much the same shade but thankfully it's a different set of circumstances. Losing Cliff felt completely devastating to our future and felt like the slap in the face that was a final deathblow to our brand. This one, not so much. We're coming off an extremely successful season, on the upswing, and there's a long time before he'd even be ready to play college ball. Plus, we've been very successful in many of our recruiting battles against big boys this year- you never like losing one, but unlike Cliff it thankfully doesn't feel like our whole entire program was riding on this, which by the way, is so incredibly wonderful to say about our program and a testament to the state of the program.

As for what Trae did, it was stupid, childish, and insulting, but perhaps this is showing my age, I think it's simply a byproduct of the times now. Kids have a social media presence, and a brand, and want to create and build followers by one upping others and doing outlandish things for clips not even taking a second to think about the repercussions or how it might effect others. The world revolves around them, and the current NIL system just makes it worse. It simply is what it is. Sad to see, but I'm not going to spend much more time thinking about this one.

Fact is Trae did enough damage to his reputation himself. He doesn't quite realize that yet. He's a kid who did something stupid, but one day a few years down the road, he'll realize it when this gets revisited and he has to deal with these consequences. Whether it be less options due to burnt bridges, ugly fan reactions, or dealing with a highly motivated opposing team and staff, and the media questions that will follow. That's called growing up. Poor choice, but sometimes you have to learn the hard way.

Don't know the kid or parents, but that video doesn't present them well. Seems very disrespectful towards all the coaches and universities that offered opportunities for their child.

I'm not at all worried about Trae choosing Nebraska. Good luck. But that slinging of Illinois cap was definitely low class. I'm more concerned about his support group which condoned/sanctioned this crap. Ick. Great PR it was not. Alf agrees.

Nope. You don't get to hind behind the "I'm a kid" excuse when you're willing to take $$$ to play football. Stupid decision? Yes. Good reason? No.

Damage control apology or not at least it shows that there is some level of caring about how he presents himself and what other people think about him.
The significance of that level of caring depends on who cared enough to make the apology happen. Trae, family, staff?

Oh my god. So what. Personally, he didn’t need to apologize because it was just an announcement with a fake out. What? He gave us three seconds of false hope? I wasn’t mad at the Cliff Alexander thing either. The instances where commitments were poached though like Eric Gordon, that was another story.

With Bret in charge of the program I have never cared less about a 4 star in state recruitment that we lost out on.
