For whatever reason, poaching in football has historically been considered okay. Basketball wasn't. Maybe changed now.

Yes, this has been the historical view. I'm assuming it's because poaching a recruit from another basketball program can have a catastrophic impact on the program losing the recruit because of the (small) roster size. In football, losing a single recruit has little impact on team performance.

FWLIW, some of it is coincidence. but that Wisky is kind of wobbling is a factor. I think that Bret coached there has zero to do with it. it's all about opportunity
You could be right. My assumption is that Bret holds a bit of a grudge from having been apart of the rebuilding of Wisconsin--and specifically the ground and pound style of cold weather football. Then to see a coach come in and think he can just turn it into an air raid overnight...
I think one can reasonably ascertain that he may feel some disdain over how that went.

Of course, it's all conjecture and the few members of Loyalty who are in the know, will likely not throw their hat in.

I doubt he cares much about the current Wisky regime and what that coach is doing, but I would imagine he still holds a slight grudge about the way the university refused to up the pay for his assistant coaches. If I recall correctly, that was his biggest beef and the reason he left Wisconsin for Arkansas.

And here I thought it was all about Fickell's cheating.
