Tough to say … Luke doesn’t necessarily need the money if that makes sense … There are a lot of kids in that scenario and even more that aren’t obviously …

That plays a huge factor …

Another example of a discount kid … Hank Beatty … Kid doesn’t need the money … Little extra in the pocket don’t hurt obviously but he’s not making demands …
Yeah, I think the better way to think of it is that on the whole, retaining a large number of players is likely more economical than having a high turnover rate, but individual cases will vary.

I don't love this - "Yes, other schools had still been trying to get in touch," he said. "I'm solid with Illinois as of right now and I do believe and what they're doing."

Agree with you in principle but he's just being honest I guess. Take out the 'as of right now' and he is under the same contractual obligation to Illinois, which is none.

yeah - it's the "as of right now" part, but you're right - rather he says it or not doesn't actually change anything.

I am not very knowlegeable about the recruiting situation, transfer portal or the current depth chart. Is next year's starting QB on the depth chart as it exists or will he come out of the portal?

Hypothetically commit could be solid, but then one could lose to ucla and NW and coach is fired. That could never happen though lol

Indy has commented a couple times that we will be into portal for our next QB.

Which tells me all the hubbaloo over Boyd being a 10 star if not for his height was bologna.

Hopefully he sticks around and develops after a few more years.

Petty must be a lock for the portal.

That's probably fair...

It's also hard to imagine putting the momentum of what hopefully will be back to back 10 win years into the hands of a redshirt freshmen.

Especially when you have a Great sell for developing portal QBs. Think it's just a sign of the times. Does anyone lose their starter anymore and not bring in competition or try to upgrade?

Shoot even Ohio State of all teams decided to portal two years in a row even with the talent they had recruited internally. Worked out both times too.

Boyd will be a redshirt freshman who’s never played a snap. Why wouldn’t we bring in a transfer?

I would be surprised if Petty doesn’t transfer

I'm not opposed to transfers. At QB, Bielema has only used transfers. It's worked.

At some point, and it may be now, opposition will simply point out that if you go to Illinois as a freshman QB, you'll never play. Illinois has a good enough sell, it may not matter, but lets at least deal with reality. I rolled my eyes at the sales job we were getting on Boyd at the time. I do hope he still makes it at Illinois.

As far as being a freshman, a QB listed here as a potential QB to watch was Drew Mestemaker, a negative star (by 247) freshman. Darian Mensah was also a freshman last year so freshman can make an impact at QB.

Another reason, particularly now that 5 to play 5 is down the drain, Illinois has a massive amount of turnover (e.g. dollars $$) next year that will need to be paid. They have a transfer QB on the roster who, at worst, is solid. Despite claims of being flush in cash, I know Illinois has to watch their dollars. We're fighting Marshall for a Juco DL so...., that tells me they're watching the dollars. They aren't fighting Michigan and we aren't Texas Tech.

I do not understand why we recruit HS QBs since we never play them under Bret. It seems to me that any QB we get will need to be through the transfer portal as it seems to work. Our next year starter will be a transfer.

You don't have to continue at qb to have success... Isaiah Williams and Beatty have done ok...

Unless you are the dodgers everyone in sports has to watch what they spend. Just because the kid is committed to Marshall doesn’t mean he’s a scrub. Look at the juco rankings the #3 juco on 247 is committed to Troy. Juco’s are over looked now because of the portal
