These kids would be a complete disservice if they ever agreed to that policy. We hunt other commits to other schools too, so let's not pretend we're not part of the problem.
Verbal commitments mean absolutely nothing in football. All it does it save the kids a roster spot until another offer shows up.
How could you be remotely surprised given the landscape of college athletics and the money being thrown around? You'd be tracking down the best offers too. We all would. These are once in a lifetime opportunity for many of these guys. Most won't make the NFL. You have to max out on this opportunity.
Look at Coleman Hawkins. He bagged what, 1M - 2M going to KSU? He'll never sniff the NBA. It sucked to lose him, but he absolutely made the right decision for himself and his family.
Take off the O & B goggles and look at it through the kids eyes.
We do the same things with other team's verbals and rightfully so. It's how the game is played.

Why do they mean "absolutely nothing"? If you were to make a poll of total verbal commitments in a class - unquestionably there will be outliers - but the overwhelming majority stay committed.
I'm not saying that they don't stay committed, but what I am saying is that until they they sign, the verbal commitment means nothing in today's recruiting business, especially with the money changing hands.
The verbal pledge carries no weight. If there's another team that truly values one of your committed players, they're going to make a play and the player will listen. If the offer is good enough, they'll take a visit and then it's 50/50.
With regards to us, we're generally a haven for three star recruits that might not be the object of another team's desires of needs. When we get commitments from higher profile recruits, the vultures are overhead. Hankins is the perfect example. He's huge for us, but he'd be huge for Mizzou too. They obviously are shooting their shot and he's obviously listening. Didn't we have a commit bail for A & M earlier this year?
We do the same thing, so we're not clean in "honoring" verbal commitments. No team is. Some just have more resources than others.
Like I said, the verbal commitment is nothing but a scholarship placeholder. If nothing better comes along, you have a landing spot. That's it.
So, while I agree with you that the majority of recruits stand pat, the majority aren't the 4 and 5 star kids.
That's purely MO. Our 2027 QB commit is going to get flooded with offers. Do you think BB thinks that's a done deal? No way. If you're the kid and Alabama comes calling, all of a sudden the verbal commitment doesn't mean much.
The roster turnover in football and especially basketball is disgusting, yet completely understandable. These kids have one bite at the apple.
