Coenen makes a couple plays, and he and his agent get an inflated opinion of his dollar value. He needs to further develop, and had a great opportunity to do that here, but is reaching for dollars. Well … Bye.
Actually the portal is the only way to determine fair market value. It would make sense for these fringe guys to check. Hopefully they’ll be back if the staff wants them.

Fair, though I’d still file that under typo. Need to fully edit and proof a public announcement.

The real worst case is if it’s not a mistake and also not a term of endearment, but I am not saying that.

You (or an agent) would likely do that before entering the portal though. Once you enter, I don't think there's any guarantee that you won't be recruited over and not welcomed back. That's the downside for the fringe guys.

Something I put together so we can track the roster and college football production. This doesn't include any freshman or guys who have not recorded a college stat. Would expect to see few freshmen in the rotation (Hankins, Rankin, Eberhart). Highlight means they have not committed yet.

Fringe cases (very few in game moments ) make the most sense. Should have been clearer. Otherwise no other team will spend the time giving you an actionable market value. Enter the portal, they will.

Yes, there is a downside risk for both team and players. I’d assume this is discussed before hand in the ones we’d like to keep but not overpay.

I’ll be curious to see how Olano turns out

I think for Illinois it’s either “we have no spot for you next year” or “he’s replaceable”. I think this year and last year very few instances of not keeping anyone we wanted to.

Olano is one of them and I’m guessing the coaches told him he should take the money.

Indiana winning the transfer portal so far. They’re going to be a problem for years to come I fear

Right.

Let’s see if the money comes out as expected.

That’s sort of my point on the differences with using back channels. In Olano’s case it’s the position that would make it difficult to truly know market value without having all information out there (including other kickers available).

If we can get X and Bailey back that would be fantastic.
With Xanai on the roster, if X decides to return to college and portals, I’d hope we’d get first and last crack, but they could both portal as a package type deal (ie Clements and Knapiks)...IDK. 🤷‍♂️ Just seems like there’s a tight relationship there with Bielema but maybe it also becomes an Olano-type situation.

Indiana out there landing big fish while we get dudes from westminster school for the gifted and east central texas merchant marines.

I guess we will just have to wait and see if its nothing to worry about yet.

Meanwhile Illinois gets 2 guys with no other P4 offers……. Not looking good

$1mil each I’m sure.

Dixon, Clement $500k-$750k each? Same with 2/3 of Khalil, Laughery, and Faegin.

All of the above are worth it.

I don’t mean to say I don’t support Houser, I’m just saying the facts are the more you pay him the less you can pay others (existing roster, or transfers). I think it is fair to say there is a particular number we would ALL be disappointed to hear we paid Houser (i.e. $4-6 million), especially in light of what we paid Luke, and the amount of roster building that still needs to be done.
