I think that Smith lad (QB-ATH) is someone they might use in a wildcat situation , but Boyd is likely the go to in an injury situation. true frosh Michale Layton also in the room.

Not sure you can really attract a decent grad or similar that will be better than Boyd to hold the clipboard & wear a cap on the sidelines

Good for Ethan. I'll be following Southern Mississippi. Maybe he'll get some tips from Brett Favre. Best of luck to you, Ethan.
The question is his he going to be QB1 there?.

With all of the Gies money, was none allocated to the portal? I'm not panicking but based on our transfer class so far, the staff better be much better at talent evaluation than their peers for next year to go well.

So Carson Boyd is QB2 next year?
Still need to add one more QB for depth, don't we? Hampton's replacement for 1 year, even if he's a senior and gets tagged as 3rd string.
We have other decently rated qbs on the roster, don’t we?

Edit: not sure of ratings, but isn’t Newton here?
I could be wrong, but I don't believe BB really views him as a D1 quarterback. Thinking we like his overall athletic skills.

Hampton's replacement is Boyd, what I take from Hampton transferring and targeting a 1-and-done like Houser is that Boyd has grown into a player the staff wants to see on the field.

And then the other factor is, especially given our needs elsewhere which will take every penny we've got, the kind of QB you'd buy who'd be willing to be a third stringer is just a waste of money versus riding with Jershaun Newton and Michael Clayton. Hampton was brought in as a firm QB2, that's different.

"He had interest from many schools in the portal including Indiana, Ohio State, Michigan, USC and more he said."
Whoa.
I understand if he was asking for way more than we could give, but I would think the staff would have really liked to have him back.
Now of course, as we enter a market system, the mere naming of those suitors only means so much without knowing the price.

Luka Doncic and Drew Timme are both signed to the Los Angeles Lakers, but we understand that those two aren't the same thing.

Nonetheless, it is an indication that DL is a scarce and valuable resource.

It's a timeless adage in football, the hardest thing to find is big guys that can move.

And that's 11 and counting outgoing transfers to other P4 schools.

I liked Angelo McCullom and thought he had much potential as an interior "space filler" on the defensive line at least.

I wish him the best. (Of course, that's easier to do when a player ends up in a different conference.)

However, my loyalty is with the Illini, not ex-players that end up on other college football teams.

In this era, portal changes are going to happen. I'm getting used to it.

I do believe, the Illini football team will do just fine next season.

I see Illinois is currently ranked 52nd in the transfer portal on 247. Is that good?
