Wow, we are an edge and mutliple D-linemen away from being an 8 win team next year. Great to have him back.
I Guess If You Say So GIF

Bret hasn’t figured out he needs DL apparently ?? That guy is just never prepared … He doesn’t ever have a plan …

Oh and this guy named Xavier Scott is running it back … Guess he’s a decent player … Might play a role next year … Just have to see … Maybe he could play DL ??

😁😂😎
Nah, i thought we were going to run a 0-7-4 defensive scheme next year. ;)

For everyone that's dogging on the "what about the D-line?" people, I do have a serious question (partly because I guess I'm kind of stupid).
As it stands right now... who are the main starting 11 on defense... and how do they rank (just better or worse) compared to who we mainly started last year? And for this comparison, I am willing to consider X. Scott as having "not started" last year, so him being back is an obvious upgrade to those who filled in in his place last year.

Don't get me wrong, I'm thrilled Scott is back (worst kept secret, by the way... even though he was having serious conversations about all possibilities), but I am genuinely interested in how we think this upcoming year's defense looks compared to this past year. I'm just not as optimistic as some are...

That is not a stupid question... it's just completely pointless to discuss right now.

Let the transfer portal play out, let Bret cook, and we can talk about how this squad stacks up later.

Why not wait until the portal is over before we talk about the starting 11. We still will make big additions to the dline

Is there an equivalent to the barge package on Defense? Except instead of beef upfront we just run 8 DBs and 3 LBs?

Well, as returning starters you look at guys like Scott, Bailey and Clarke as upgrades on their previous selves (and they will be getting paid accordingly).

The problem is that I don't think we have anything as good as Dylan Rosiek or Gabe Jacas at LB or OLB, and while there may not have been a superstar individual performer among Durojaiye, Thompson, Neal, McCullom, Coenen, Hunt, Warren, etc on the DL, there was a ton of strength in depth there and it's all gone with pretty middling replacements so far.

If we were done we'd be screwed. But we aren't done.

That's fine, as long as everyone, myself included, is willing to come back here and recognize one of two things in a couple months:
1. We dropped the ball big time, and maybe credit should have been given where credit is due to the people questioning where the DL talent was going to come from, or
2. Admit the panic was ill-timed and we just needed to let it play out.

Again, I'm just tired of some users trying to gaslight me into believing things that I can clearly see are not true with my own eyes. As it stands right now, we are in serious trouble next year on the DL side of things. Obviously things can "play out", but the transfer options aren't getting any better.

Big news with Scott back. Secondary may be approaching that no fly zone a la '22.

Parker brothers from UW, FSU brothers and Gray + Hastrop from Oregon makes this team a B1G contender this year.
The Desire twins from FSU announced they are going back to FSU today, so scratch them off your list. They were the best edge and best DL available in the portal at the time

I think the whole point people are making is in regards to the “right now” comments.

The coaching staff aren’t idiots. They know what we need and to this point, they haven’t given me a ton of reasons to doubt them with what they’ve done to the program. I also 100% believe they have more ability and experience identifying talent and building rosters than any posters on here.

I’m willing to give them until games start being played to see what our defense looks like. If we get to that point and our DLine and LB’s are worse than last year, I’ll 100% say they dropped the ball as will most of the posters on here.

Everyone on here knows we need more DLine help. No one’s gaslighting you, you’re just stating the obvious before the process has been completed. I’m not going to speak for other posters, but in regards to any comments I’ve made, I’m saying I trust the staff more than any poster on here. I’m going to let the process play out before I pass judgement on an unfinished product.

Huge job by Bret retaining Xavier, Clarke, and Bailey. While there has been a whole lot of sky is falling retention talk on here lately, Bret continues to impress with his ability to retain our top players year in and year out. It's pretty clear that the kids who come here love him, his vision of the program, and the team. And in this day and age in the portal era, when loyalty is often bought by the biggest paycheck, that is something special. We're pretty close to a full refresh at this point which for anyone older than 3 years old is pretty mindblowing. Getting 10 wins last year and beating South Carolina, getting 9 wins this year and beating Tennessee and USC, and on the verge of a full refresh honestly needs to put the "We are Illinois. Woe is us. Where's my cup?" narrative to bed. We're not there anymore and huge credit to Bret, the coaching staff, and Josh.

Considering all the holes we had going into this offseason, we're in pretty good shape. And yes, the quality DL supply is significantly lower than the demand, however, we do have recent success, a solid team we're building, immediate starter minutes, and we probably have enough cash to tender a competitively good offer, and we still have some time left. So I understand the nervousness, I do, but I still think there's optimism there.

If the season were to start today, yes we would have a bad defensive line. But the season doesn’t start today. And we haven’t filled out the roster spots on the defensive line yet.

Over the next few weeks, those spots will be filled and we can judge the position group based on who’s actually in it.

Based on the level of talent acquired at every other position, I have reason to believe they’ll attract talented guys. If they don’t and portal season ends with an subpar defensive front, sure, be concerned.

Martins licis, Rob Kearney, Thor, Eddie hall, the stoltman brothers, brian shaw all have eligibility. Im sure they could be pretty good defensive tackles
