You also saw elite defensive lines. Good dline makes everyone better. Last year we had a bad dline and look at how the defense was

Just rewatching the tennessee game.I love where we're at. We absolutely crush them if the officiating would have done their job consistently, al game. The late hits on luke are phenomenal, not to mention the three holding penalties on their ninety seven yard kick return. And their coach saying, he had nothing to do with their collective trying to pay our Luke Sywalker, 3 million a year. Take him from us, is laughable.

Idk how you can watch Miami and Indiana last night and act like what we have in the front 7 is good enough

if we don't/can't land any experienced starters on the DL & LB between now and May 1, then
a. we need to ask why
b. we need to be concerned about the D as a whole

I totally understand why it may not have been done yet, but it would be nice to get it done over the next couple weeks

Why hasn't it been done yet? I am not sure I see a rationale

I feel like today/tomorrow are good days to land a couple of impact DLine commits. I’m choosing to believe we were just holding the news to not take attention away from the National Championship game.

If for no other reason, I’m guessing Bret would want to do it for the morale of this board.

In my opinion, the biggest difference here is fan expectations vs. the reality of the marketplace for DL. DL plain and simple is notoriously difficult to fill through the portal. There just aren't a whole ton of experienced good ones out there and those that are fetch an absolute premium on the market. Really good DTs with P4 experience are quite rare. It's why I did warn early in the cycle that those saying we'll just go out and easily upgrade DL might not be realistic.

And don't get me wrong, I think we certainly need an upgrade in DL. And outside of McCollum, I didn't see much potential for better than average talent at best. So it's sorta a rock and a hard place. Our best bet is/was probably buying a good G5 DL or overpaying an inexperienced P4 player with upside. Either way though there will be risk associated. But the likelihood of getting an experienced high end no risk DL and winning that ensuing bidding war? Just hard.

As for not completely stocking up the LB room though, that one's weird to me. Seems like we should be able to do that...

multipronged question:
i wonder if there was a deep dive into exactly who we have and their capabilities we'd find that we are closer to
a competitive team than what we think at first glance? how many defections haven't /won't find a place to go and
ask to come back? how many would we take back? ive heard rumblings on the national level that there are hundreds
maybe thousands of guys who have been convinced by an agent/ friend/ parent to hit the portal and have no home.

If the market is overvaluing mediocre guys with P4 experience vs. the talented hard-working P5s with great PFF grades for better production, we are doing exactly the right thing.

Indiana just won a title with those JMU guys.

Our key players that left went to P4 teams

Which "key players" were that? We didn't win 9 games with defense. We had Rutgers, Maryland, Purdue, Western Illinois and Western Michigan on our schedule and all of those games but 1 were at home. So if you are asking me we started the season with the knowledge that 6 wins was a 95% probability. As for the other games we turned Duke over 5 times but they had 400+ yards and pushed us around all day. Indiana, Ohio State, Washington, Wisconsin we were awful defensively, Defense was very good against USC and NU and Tennessee was missing 5 players that opted out and 6 players were already in the portal.

We won with offense. We had the 56th ranked defense in the country. That isn't going to win you anything in the NCAA. So with the number of players returning and the number of Freshman or redshirts that didn't play, I am with the comments about "missing a few pieces." We will miss McCollum. We want players that want to be here and can tackle - for the most part, that's not the other 5 players that hit the portal.

Scary straw man alert.
More football reality -
Indiana National Championship roster:
5 - star high school recruits = 0
4 - star high school recruits = 7
3 - star high school recruits = 55
2 - star high school recruits = 15

Yes, college football is changing based on money. But the money better spent is on coaching staff retention and player / team development.

Is it coaching staff retention (a whole 2 years) or is it the quality of the coaching staff as a whole?

another fact is over half the team were seniors or super seniors .
