I assume they aren’t done on the DL quite yet, but how do you feel about the fund allocation so far?

I assume we spent pretty big on the returnees (guys like Dixon, Clement, Bailey, Juice, X, etc, probably weren’t cheap). Plus, like you said, we spent big in the portal on QB and likely offensive line, so I assume the offense is going to be really good next year and likely much improved in the secondary.

But it seems like the staff haven’t allocated quite as much for the front 7 on defense. Is that confidence is the returnees? Confidence in Jamo to coach em up?
Of course we’re not done on the DL yet. We spent a ton of money on those guys. I’m fine with how the allocated the money. Most important position on the field QB….got a pretty good one there. OL should be better and I think we should be faster at WR. The secondary should improve. I don’t think they expected schools to throw crazy money at our DL to poach them but they have money to get guys they feel good about on the DL. Jamo is one of the most respected DL coaches and developers in the CFB so I feel pretty good with him coaching the line.

Makes sense, appreciate it.

Who is left to get on the DL? My concern, so late in the game, that we come in ranked in the 70’s in the transfer portal rankings. Purdue is ahead of us. Although I realize they were really bad and needed portal help, but the lack of experience on the defensive line scares the bejesus out of me. ILL!

The DL includes positions where players with not much of a ranking seem to pop up more than at some other spots. Not sure why. Or even if it’s true. Just my observation. So don’t stop worrying.

Something to keep in mind w/r/t 247's transfer portal rankings is they don't account for the quality of players being replaced. Skews the evaluation of the offseason a bunch. For example, Penn St. is the #5 ranked transfer class according to 247. They brought in a ton of guys. But they also lost a huge chunk of their roster. There is a good chance their roster got worse, not better.

I don't think On3 does a great job either, because I think these transfer portal ratings are generally hastily assembled and inconsistent. But they do at least attempt to rank based on incoming vs outgoing. They have us at #41. Incidentally, they have PSU at #44.

At this point we are going to just have to admit that the insiders were dead wrong here. No for sure upgrades anywhere in the front 7 right now.

So incredibly frustrating that we don’t seem to be holding any of the defensive staff accountable. I’m sure that is hurting portal recruiting. What exactly do we have to sell on defense right now?

247Sports has Purdue's 2026 football commits ranked as 47th (not terrible, actually) vs the Illini's 31.

But, Purdue's roster has been devastated in the past few years.

Purdue has a l-o-n-g way to go yet to become competitive in Big 10 football.

Hear ya, but if the transferring isn't near complete, who cares what the rankings are?

Also given that players from James Madison coached correctly can (with others) win a National Championship, how important are the transfer rankings?

Not sure where to put this

It appears like NIL is starting to have some legal teeth. It’s not preventing players from leaving but they might have to pay money back. I would be interested in the settlement

They settled. Basically Mensah wanted to make it easy. Had he been taken to court he would’ve won easily, IMO.
