I know this discussion started around a specific recruit, but zooming out: deciding where to overspend your NIL budget is unavoidable if you want a long-term roster strategy.

“Never overspend, always find value” sounds great, but when better-resourced programs are strategically overspending, true “value” often disappears. Like it or not, recruit pedigree still matters. You can choose to spend above your peers at QB, OL, DL, WR, etc., but that requires two things: (1) those priority investments have to hit, because they’ll take up a disproportionate share of your cap, and (2) your scouting and development have to outperform in the spots where you’re spending less.

The risk/reward is even higher at QB, OL, and DL given their portal value. You can pay up for a Cameron Wagner-type prospect or spend less on a Soren Fifer-type*. Historically, the higher-rated tier produces better results over volume — but they cost more NIL and may sit for a year or more.

*Just an example, I am not privy to what their NIL asks look like
Yeah, that's how I see it for the most part. NIL in this sense is like salary cap management, at least from the roster construction side. Need to manage the roster to optimize return on the budget you have. QB, OT, and DT are probably the 3 "luxury" positions where there is a very big drop off in talent from the best available and a good one is going to cost a lot of your budget, and the demand extremely outweighs the supply. And it makes sense. You can get value running backs, wide receivers, and secondary, and they'll probably be decent enough if you surround them with the right pieces, whereas value QBs, OTs, and DTs just lose you games unless you strike gold on your evals.

Optimally, you probably want to avoid going to the portal for DT and OT needs as much as you can by relying on your prep talent evals and development such that when they're ready to see the field you have them at a discount for the season before they need to get paid the big bucks. And if you can do that effectively over multiple years, even if you lose some to the portal during the offseason each year, you have the next batch ready to step in.

Quarterback on the other hand, needs a lot of time, development, and sunk cost as a prep. And any that does show promise as a freshman is going to be recruited very hard 24/7. And it's hard to turn away starting QB NIL from another program especially if you've been sitting on the bench all year developing. Makes me think that for QB Bret has been well ahead of the curve. Vulturing talented QBs from other P4 schools who have been sitting or passed over in favor of someone else and has a couple years of eligibility remaining, or a proven high midmajor QB seems like the right approach. You're going to spend a lot of money on the position regardless, might as well spend the money on a better known commodity that is ready to start and can develop as needed on field.

It's still early but the level of recruits that are locking in visits to Illinois early should dispel initial concerns about the current staff's recruiting prowess.
to my knowledge , Pat Ryan & Pat Embleton and their crew including Terry Hawthorne are largely the ones making all the initial contact.
Of course Art and a few asst coaches are involved and Bret also when necessary

I still find it crazy that we have 3 top 10 2027 Quarterbacks out of Illinois (Trae moved, but still)

And we have a quarterback committed out of Utah. Wild times.

I can’t believe we’re recruiting
It has to be all Art, Hawthorne, and Nate McNeal. Didn’t you hear? None of the coaches we brought in recruit. They’re too old. Never mind that Pat Ryan basically gets called out on any Illinois kids social posts.

You mean with this second rate coaching staff?

I have to say this. You guys are really following recruiting carefully. Awfully impressive from a fan perspective.

We will see about the coaching staff over the next 12 months.

I'm not certain it actually works that way. I think the position coaches reach out to players in between their sophomore and Jr year when the NCAA permits.

Then Embleton's team takes over evaluation getting game film from their Junior year. After that the recriuting staff sets up zoom calls and the rest so the position coaches and coordinators can both speak directly and answer questions. Then comes the home visit. After that if there is interest, comes on the on - campus visit. It's a real process and Illinois has both hired (and lost) good people there. Its the entire process that leaves the overall impression on the players. But recruits normally have normall spoken or communicated with 6-7 people before they visit or get an offer.

So much of this year's recruiting class was actually cultivated by the coaches that left at the end of last season. Certainly they will contact the recruit from their new school, if they see value there.

It is pretty surprising with all the olds we just hired to the staff. I thought we were just going to stop recruiting all together because they couldn't talk to kids.
It's really impressive that the olds were able to give out offers and schedule visits! Do we care about commitments too or are we good?

Note: I'm not particularly concerned about recruiting this early on and I know your post is tongue in cheek, but let's not act like anyone who was concerned is an idiot

I like the fact that our head coach is so active in recruiting. Position coaches come and go but if the head coach is involved and develops relationships with all of these players that tells me all I need to know and I think it lets the players know how important they all are to the program. Not many head coaches are as involved with recruiting as Bret is. That’s why I am not worried about recruiting.

whats weird is, that people still think that only the 10 assistant coaches are allowed to hit the recruiting trail.
thats just not how it is done anymore with many of the coaches who are over 40 . yea , they are involved, but not on the road as much as like before
