(Disclaimer: I am Team Shield for sure.)

In the same way that some on the forum are 100% committed to Team Shield (or at least apologizing for the Shield logo in the face of its haters), I have to throw a defense out there for the white helmets ... I totally get the arguments against them (specifically that Illinois football desperately needs a "brand" going forward, and white helmets are clearly not the solution) ... but they look cool. Period.

I might be way off with my specific idea, but I'm certain that the next great innovation that gets the young people excited will leave the something-new-every-week "uni swag" behind.

I agree ... and I think Virginia is a decent example of what you might be alluding to. Their new uni's for this season look sharp (especially for a school who's colors are orange and blue). They are clean, classic looking uni's that give a modern look while also giving a nice nod to their past uniforms. I wish we would've gone more in this direction with our uniform combinations. I'd also be fine with dropping the gray ones altogether.

I get the sense we're not gonna see the white helmets much in actual games, particularly at home. Have we worn white helmets at home yet under Lovie?

From a quick ESPN browsing, it looks like we did once ... and it was for a forgettable beatdown vs. Western Michigan in his first year. It looks like this is what we have worn at home under Lovie:

2016
O/B/O vs. Murray State
O/O/O vs. North Carolina
W/B/W vs. Western Michigan
O/B/O vs. Purdue
B/G/G (Grange uniforms) vs. Minnesota
O/B/O vs. Michigan State
B/B/B vs. Iowa

2017
O/B/O vs. Ball State
O/B/O vs. Western Kentucky
O/O/O vs. Nebraska
O/B/O vs. Rutgers
B/G/G (Grange uniforms) vs. Wisconsin
O/B/O vs. Indiana
O/B/B vs. Northwestern

My conclusion seems to be that Lovie was QUITE traumatized by the outing with the white helmet, LOL. He seems to prefer the traditional O/B/O format with one random O/O/O game vs. a "big opponent" and the "Galloping Ghost uniforms" for Homecoming. Are we still doing those with the new uniforms?

I mean those look fine, but that's still three helmet monte, just like everyone else. A different combo every week. It's very similar to what Oregon just released, and is basically the same as ours as well. It's the conventional wisdom done tastefully.

Smashing the conventional wisdom would be a different thing.

Yup, and I'm guessing this will continue, though the recruit pictures seem to indicate blue pants will be the choice with the orange jerseys.

I just broke out in hives from that off-orange bordered, crooked, bubbles-on-the-bottom helmet decal. Mother of god, if I see that this year, I’m turning off the TV and leaving the room.

Like, who thought that was ok to broadcast to the world?

Those bubbles on the bottom are raindrops refracting the light

I'm pretty sure its crappy application, not rain.

Aside from all design opinions etc., just simple proper sticker application has long been an issue! Grrrrrrrrrrr, I hate it!

Pretty sure this is what's been holding the program back. Yup.

LOL, like anybody was saying that... More like, we want to see things done the right way with pride and attention to detail. That includes uniform and equipment managers who should care as much we do and be expected to do a good job. There are high schools on espn right now, that are more buttoned up.:frustrated:
I agree. The way I see it, it takes time to build a program and there are lots of things out of your control when it comes to recruiting and even in games, so I'm patient with Lovie and his staff; they have their work cut out for them. But one thing you DO have control over is your uniforms. So in the short term, can we at least get those right???

I am convinced now that we just put the I on the back of the helmet. That, along with a mirrored orange finish would be awesome!

Whatever we wear when we go bowling again is going to look awfully sweet to me. Unless it's those Pittsburg Steelers throwback uni's... nothing can make those look good.

Helmet on field look

Actually looks kind of slick if not for that God-awful wrong-orange outline.

I am enjoying these last few days of ragging on our new uniforms before I inevitably become an apologist for them and - after a passive compliment on them from any of my Iowa friends - fully descend into "liking" these travesties. :)

I have already crossed that bridge.

You know, if they could have done the :illinois: the way it's supposed to be these new unis might have grown on me already, but noooooooo.

Anyone have an idea if the outline a different orange or if it is more of a finishing difference?

After having to suffer those metallic helmets for however many years, just having the color be illini orange is enough for me to call the uniforms a win.

The white ones look so darn nice. Blue jersey is tolerable. When we where the orange jerseys im gonna close my eyes and remember my first sentence.

I didn't really like the way the uniforms looked on TV. I hope they grow on me. The helmets were my least favorite part from the initial pictures, but are now the part I like the most.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The uniforms really aren't bad. They might actually be cool. The problem is that Syracuse did it first. It's their uniform. Flat out. That's what bothers me.
