Well, if you are a superstitious person ... here is the road record by uniform in the last two years, haha. I also included the virtual home game vs. Northwestern at Wrigley since we wore white. Roughly in my subjective order of overall performance...
W 31-24 in OT at #22 Nebraska
L 7-21 at #9 Penn State
W 38-31 at Rutgers
W 45-19 at Duke
W 38-28 vs. Northwestern (Wrigley Field)
W 43-27 at Purdue
L 25-42 at Washington
L 9-38 at #1 Oregon
L 10-63 at #19 Indiana
Takeaways For the Superstitious
- Given that the Script helmet also gave us one of the biggest bowl wins in school history (provided the context) in its only other debut and the very clear fact that Indiana just continues to prove it is an elite team, it would certainly be foolish to start hating on the Script helmet, IMO.
- If you toss the Wrigley-themed Block I helmet under a "Block I" category, it might be easy to overrate the good luck associated with that one, lol. Its vibe is very much "mess around for a few quarters vs. an inferior team and eventually pull away because the other team sucks." The obvious exception is the Oregon game, which brings me to the real conclusion here...
- White pants on the road need retired for good. It looks goofy, and it has now given us nothing but two a$$ whoopings in the Pacific Northwest, haha.
- Lastly, it seems clear that if there is any "good juju" uniform for this team, it is the
O/W/O and Slant
ILLINOIS combo for road games. Even in the game we lost, we were in a nailbiter with a top 10 PSU team at their place until the final minutes. I don't want to hear a single poster here suggest that Bret is in any way superstitious about uniforms given we just ditched this look after the Duke game!!
- It's so clearly time to try #BPOTR for the Wisconsin game ... not sure how anyone can disagree, either. Not only would it be a good visual contrast with the Badgers, not only is it LONG overdue and not only would it be a huge hit with the fans ... we need to shake something up.
Patterns with home uniforms are a lot less noticeable, as we (A) play two easy non-conference opponents at home every year and (B) almost always wear our least exciting uniform vs. them.
