Illinois Football Uniforms

Funny the bears mentioned referencing the Illini football uniforms in honor of George Halas with the new jerseys. Everyone here wanted us to look like the bears when we played in Chicago and they ended up looking like us!
Okay question for those who know NFL and NFL history (and I guess Pro-Sports) more than I do:

Are we the only school that has an NFL team who based their color scheme after them? Is any Pro-Sports team based on the color scheme of a university?

I thought about this a couple years ago, as I couldn’t readily of one, but it’s a bit of a cool thing if that is the case.

Chat GPT gave a much less in-depth answer than it usually trots out for these weird questions that I love ... but that answer was nonetheless an emphatic "yes"!

Nope, the Vikings got their color scheme from the university of Washington, their first GM was an alum

The Rams originally had red color scheme copying Fordham of all schools

Yeah, and I read a bit after making the post that the Arizona Cardinals started out in Chicago with ties to University of Chicago and their Cardinal color scheme :/

My support for the new uniforms is pretty heavily due to JUST how much better they are than the Lovie Era set ... but I would agree that I am not a huge fan of the shoulder stripes. I think a design like the Bears (who use the exact same pants design / color scheme as us, with the obviously huge exception of no orange pants) with some really understated but cool sleeve stripes would have been a lot better. This is Chat GPT's take, and I would have definitely preferred this (forgive the first-try AI art and imagine the stripes perfectly spaced, lol)...

Switch to a slightly less annoying font, and it's even better!

With that said, however, it's pretty easy for me to just judge our current uniforms based on what they replaced ... and in that regard, they're a home run and a half.

The stripes on the sleeves and either font is money.

I like the current uniforms but those are even better. I was a big proponent of bringing in the Rose Bowl jerseys/uniforms as either the new uniform (At the time) and also was hoping they'd wear the throwbacks when they decided to wear all the different helmets. That would be cool if they do that also.

But IMO can't go wrong with the current uniforms. The font could be better, but it's splitting hairs for me.

To me, the uniforms would be literally perfect if we just moved the current stripes to the sleeves and fixed the font. This is ChatGPT so not a perfect build but here’s an example:

The Browns got their colors from Bowling Green State. They had training camp in BG and used the school’s equipment.

I've made my peace with NYGIantsIllini. It took decades.
I’ve made my peace with all of them, as they all bring their own charm…

… except for Block I, which we rigidly wear the most. Go browse iconic football programs, and I think many would be surprised how many are obsessively loyal they are to having their primary logos on the helmet, lol.

I don't love the Illinois helmet but it's leaps and bounds better than the block I helmet.
I accept it. In addition, because I was around at its inception in '89 and we had strong teams under Mackovic for three seasons while I was still hanging around campus, I have fond memories of that uniform combo. I never liked the derivative nature of it and preferred the arched ILLINI that Bob Blackman introduced. Then again, Hayden Fry rebranded Iowa football in the late '70s as College Pittsburgh Steelers. That never bothered me and, in fact, I've always liked their kit, esp. the road ones.

NYGIllini has been around now for nearly 40 eyars. I like the rotation of the helmets, including it, though it's far from my fave. And, yes, I dislike BLOCK I, too.

I dislike the Block I as well, and never really liked the nygillinois, they are both very generic imo. The Arched Illini always fit the helmets best as it follows the curves of the helmet and is unique. I like the script logo but it works much better on the basketball unis than the football helmet. On the helmet it looks small, cramped and busy to my eye.

I disliked the arched Illini when I was in school, and I still don't like it. I do like the script Illinois, the Block I, and the NYG Illinois comes in a distant third. . . .

I like any and all of the logos, as long as they are on an orange helmet. And thankfully the current staff sees to it that the Block I decals are applied straight.

Did not like the plain no-logo look that Mackovic used in Jeff George’s first season.

I’d kinda like to see the wide-set stripes that Blackman used, in a throwback design. Might not work on the modern helmet shapes.
