Not buying into the Tate article… I still cannot escape the thought that the Smith family reached out to Michigan State… I know they wanted to test the waters but to reach out to a school and then receive an offer and then not commit seems a little unusual to me… My heart says Illinois but my head says Michigan State… I hope my heart wins

Yeah but who knows what constitutes "reaching out?" I can tell you that I wouldn't want to go to a school that I had to recruit. If they don't figure out for themselves that you are a player they want and you have to sell yourself or convince the coach, you've got an uphill battle for playing time, etc. Go where you're wanted.

Tate is a crazy old dude but doesn't typically go out of his way to make bold statements like this. Chances are he has the information to write that article. He has been in the business too long to just be throwing something out there to see if it sticks.

That's why it seems very odd that there isn't even a general reference to any kind of source. It would be simple to include and seems like pretty basic writing.

Tate article doesn't strike me as anything more than speculation WRT Tilmon. I think Loren's been reading too many Loyalty posts

Would it really make any difference if he said "A source tells me... " ?

I don't understand the point of Tate releasing that article or why his editors decided to run it. Not only is it super lazy, it benefits no one, cites no sources, makes assumptions based on what information exactly and is truly tactless. I've followed recruiting for a while but don't live in Champaign area so I haven't seen much his writing but maybe it's time to hang em up Loren..

I've been through this whole reading the celebration posts on the day of based on "sources" too many times, not believing a word until it comes out of MS's mouth. It has literally happened like 3 times in the last few years here.

Newspapers with daily circulation of 22,000, do desperate things.

Times are changing. We need to start being more confident in our leadership, but I understand what you're saying.

Bahhahaha that Hondo thread is pure gold and exhibit A against S&C's thesis that Illini fans somehow have the market cornered on recruiting neuroses... they think that Hondo clown cost them Mark Smith!
