No, I agree with that. Be gracious, own up to the disappointment you've caused, etc. But, officially, Tilmon hasn't actually said adios to Illinois yet. He still has the chance to step up and apologize for any frustration he's caused, etc. I don't expect he will, though.

Why are people so afraid to say information if they have it?
Smith said after tonight's visits IL is not an option. You might hear different and get your hopes up, but IL is out of the running, that's a fact. I only post facts to help everyone out, and no doubt this is terrible news.
BU was not the problem I was also told. He's going to be a very good coach for us.

I spoke to Smith's camp (my uncle) & I KNOW the BOLD is NOT TRUE......

I know this is an opinion poll but unless you want people to bad mouth Smith or say negative things about his recruiting ...you should have your facts correct....Smith got an offer from Kentucky, visiting a school this weekend...maybe talking to another school (already in the mix on Sunday), playing in an All Star game (April 15, 2017) .... a list is forthcoming in the next few days., nor has the Smith's camp texted anyone that he committed .....and those my friends (ndandrid & Ratdawg) are the "REAL" facts.....smh.....

My own personal opinion was that we were out of it, but I'm also of the opinion that Hooping34 is more tied into the Smith camp than anybody else on the board so I'll choose to believe we still have a puncher's chance.
Thanks for the info, Hoops.

Not on Underwood. It's the cost you pay for changing your coaching staff a month prior. Probably will take another year (or likely two) for us to be winning games like we need to to get recruits.

Would make sense except for the one little thing that Missouri just changed it's staff at the same time as we did, so why would Tillman run from U of I to lesser program that is in far worse shape than we are. Getting Porter and another really good player, might be good for one year, but that will be it unless Martin can build on that. So find another reason that makes sense.

However, four months of recruiting compared to a couple of weeks by others, makes it seem like years.

That's fine, you have your sources and me mine. DEFINITELY not going to go back and forth on this.
Was trying to be helpful so we can use time on this board talking about more realistic recruits. Again, I wouldn't post this if my information wasn't ROCK solid. You think I wanted to post this awful news?

Yeah and I hope he doesn't leave and go to Mizzou. For all I know he did apologize to Walker and staff but it sure doesn't seem like it when you reaffirm your commitment then 2 days later ask for a release. That's just petty.

See now, there's your mistake. You want logic and sense applied to decisions made by 17-18 year old individuals. What they perceive as their best interests may not align with either logic or sense. And that's not even TOUCHING the shenanigans going on in the so-called recruiting grey area and what agenda-driven adults may be saying to them.

If I'm Tilmon I may look of Missouri and see a coach with a 'sexy' reputation who has the #1 recruit coming in. That's an attention grabber. Who knows what that coach and Tilmon's peers are telling him - maybe that he's a one-and-done. That sounds great!

Could be lots of things.

For some reason I found myself down a youtube wormhole and watched the Cliff hat trick announcement, and remember how fuming mad I was at that point. Had he come to UI, who knows how things may have played out differently as for the success of the team as well as for him personally.....but I have to imagine he would have had SOME impact on the court, but NOT led us to the 2nd weekend, and he'd currently be the same pro career.floundering around, riding the bench on some NBA team in between being shuttled to the D league. Not sure if the short success would have given Groce momentum in recruiting or another year or two of rope....but as of right NOW, I'm fine with the staff in place and how everything has worked out.

I'm no where near as upset about this as I was about that...maybe its just the perception we are in more capable hands right now.

I don't really think you can equate these two coaching changes. They are VERY different.

An articulate African American head coach who graduated from East St. Louis and went on to a successful Big Ten career at Purdue is going to have much more appeal to many high school kids (especially to an ESL guy like Tilmon) than a 60 year old caucasian head coach whose name most kids had to google when he was announced at Illinois.

I've thought all along we would get one of, but not both, mark Smith and DaWill. Bring us a healthy DaWill with Frazier and Lucas and the backcourt will be just fine. Happy trails to Smith and Til"wemeetagain"mon.

ndandrid, what kind of connections do you have to the STL area? In a previous post you told us you are from East Lansing and you are very in tune with the Michigan State staff. Did he call the Michigan State staff right after his meeting with BU and tell them that Illinois is out? Did this information come from the Michigan State friend staffer of yours?

It's possible that ndandrid AND Hooping34 have sources they know and trust and have given them the info they are reporting. We know Hooping34 is very tight with the Smith camp and I like what he's saying more, so I'm going to choose to believe him. But thanks for sharing what you heard ndandrid!

Not exactly. Tim was never going to Illinois if Groce was still coach. His father Jeff was very unhappy with how Michael was used his freshman season. They weren't big fans.

This is very true, I sit kind of close to Jeff during the games and you can see it all over his face.
